If any other of my American neighbours correspond w/ their congresscritters I suggest they include, when discussing the 'dual-boot issue', mention of preventing M$ from hindering a system from dual booting.
If MS is forced to "allow dual-booting", in its present form, they will simply change the OS to *not* boot unless it is solo on the box... Ill leave it as an exercise for the reader as to how this may be accomplished bonus prizes to the person who includes a DRMscheme that precludes dual-booting...
MS: "We had to prevent those other OSes from the machine else we would be in violation of the DMCA" - no, im not joking.

This will also mean that people can use the suite at home and bring there work with them to the office. The local OA geek wont be up in arms (as much) if they have a license for a local machine... this will help Gobe put a wedge into business machines - they will be able to have their suite seen by IT types and managment...this is an EXCELLENT idea.
Does anyone know if this device has flashable ROM? I own a CasioE100, I bought it the moment it became available (it was the feature leader BY FAR at its time, and the Casio Exx series still holds strong (including the hardware on my E100)).
The reason i ask is this, without a flashable ROM, will i be left behind AGAIN(!). You see, ive got this E100 that all the CE developers have 'moved on from' - if they burn JavaPersonalEdition into the Sharp unit, and i am incapable of removing it for a J2ME upgrade later? Will I be able to completely remove Opera5 for Opera5+x? I would hate to get stuck w/ QT Embedded VXX(?) and get screwed when everyone moves up to QTE VXX+Y.
Really, I am not just a little miffed about the 'applicance' like state of the PDA world - the PDA universe needs someone who will ship a PDA in a more generic sense, with WinCE as an 'option' and drivers for all the hardware for WinCE, QT Palmtop, QNX and Linux.
Instead of stearing PDAs like the handheld version of Apple hardware, Id like to see a little more of a "open IBM clone" style hardware... but i digress.
So, what is the chance that I might be able to consider this device, IE: only if I can re-flash it to be the 'latest' and 'greatest' software available in future... i cant stand to think ill end up with anther $600CDN PDA that I cannot shove software into because it was sold as a glorified calculator...with a permanent OS/APP/ROM image.
it implements the ARM instruction set and therefore infringes upon ARM's patents.
What are you talking about? I know nothing of their patents -obviously you dont either- because to assume any implementation of a compatible instruction set is infringing is ludicrous... care to elaborate...?
fabbing millions of chips illegitimately is not easy to get away with since people would definitely notice
Unless, it is *IN FACT* legal, as the EE times suggests, ARM is on slim-ice here by accusing patent infringment seeing as how the EEng in question actually produced this by a new implementation of the instruction set, not by reverse engineering the core itself and cloning it.
I think you need to take a step back and understand that 'intellectual property' is not "whatever the hell some capitalist calls any-goddamn-thing he makes".. although it is getting to that point these days, where any capitalist can decree himself the owner - in every aspect - of any intellectual facet of his widget.
There is a method of killing Corporations. You can enact the death penatly by revoking their charter.
There are activists involved in trying to revoke the charters of Unocal and Tobacco Companies... see here: http://lists.essential.org/1998/corp-focus/msg0003 3.html and http://www.corpwatch.org/trac/feature/humanrts/res istance/mokhiber.html. The idea and practice are 'out of favour' at the moment, but in the past, Corporate charters were often revoke when companies commited wrong-doings. Americans have lost the ability to demand action of their politicians, the DoJ who should be upholding laws are neglecting them. The laws exist to do this now. People arent using them. Seeing how American Corporations have the same rights as American citizens, but none of the responsiblity and consequnces, these corporate acts - those of profit seeking - have become self-justifiying and unstoppable. YOU CANNOT HINDER COMMERCE is the rule of the day in America. I am a Canadian (who just applied for his Portuguese (mother was portuguese) citizenship to provide an escape hatch to the relative Sanity of the EU (escaping from just these issues i am discussing)), but i can assure you America, and Americans, you have a very real and immediate problem in your hands, your democracy *has* been subverted, your government is absolutely out of control in almost every respect - I have come to know this living so close to America, regrettably within the very real sphere of control that extends out of imperialist america, and I have watched things change dramatically in the last 8-10 years.... (im only 27).
The Plutocratic American Government hasnt the will to do this (bite hands that feeds them..) - as we see here in this ridiculously-light judgement against M$, the ability for the government (enabled by the citizenry) has been made impotent.
I am astonshed at this ruling, it really is telling that the anti-corporatist movement needs to remobalize in the face of anti-terrorist hysteria, and that the root cause of the attacks of 09.11 are the same problems that allowed M$ to skate - yet again.
Well, i guess we can hold out for Europe to do a deeper dive into M$'s monopoly abuse and corruption...
Wow, you really bought the spin on that SmarkLinks event didnt you.
Here is how it went down: MS reveals SmartLinks to the world in there beta sw. People (citizens, privacy advocates, capitalists and publishers) are immediately up in arms b/c M$ is essentially trying to become a broker or gatekeeper of internet content itself. M$ realizing that it had revealed a bit of a no-no at the wrong time (pre-monopoly-settlement) and in the face of the abomination XP is (from the POV of the above). They then withdraw the feature because they knew every editorial from here to hell would be damming them for such an obvious abuse of monopoly.
Dont confuse this with concern for their "consumers" (there vial language, not mine - i hate that terminology).
Want a better example? The abuse of HTTP and IE to redirect to MSN, the 404-2-MNS.search page garbage.
Do i really need MSN tracking* that i mis-typed www.hotdoggiemidgetpr0n.com?
SmartLinks is another one of M$'s methods to move people to its 'content'... XP with media-player (and the mp3 'extinguish' push), SmartLink, Digital Camera to Printer-Partner(TM) application - hell even the Xbox - is a move on M$s part to get away from the stagnant SW market (which they wholly control) and into the mindspace as publisher (think RIAA/MPAA for the new totally- wired-digital media delivery future.
Be afraid. Very afraid. XP is a method to turn your PC into a content-delivery system under M$s control, i offer you SmartLinks as proof of this.
Bottom line: Dont believe the hype, marketing does not buy reality.
*and i dont mean that in a tin-foil-head-covered paranoia. you know as well as i do what kind of abuse these kind subversion of IE can result in, how about M$ decides they would like to start tracking your surfing completely... what you click, how fast, what time of day and harvest all this for marketing garbage to you. Most people might not even notice it, most people have no idea how such tech could be possible (if its not on the screen it dosnt exist) - but we certainly dont need this kind of bullshit getting out of hand. Ever read Ferenheight451, where your TV 'watches back'? Welcome to the media future, simply s/tv/computer.
Console manufacturers have been losing money on the consoles themselves in order to gain marketshare
Im sorry - why does everyone accept this as truth? Ive heard it *many* times here @/., but what REALLY makes this so certain?
I believe that marketing pushes the idea that the conoles are some 'super advanced' technology to encourage people to feel that the console is 'a good deal' and that they dont incure alot of up-front cost, that they can 'invest' in entertainment incrementally... ie: purchase games.
Why can they make money on a $125 DVD player and not on a $329 DVD + Game machine?
Im just a little less certain than most that this common dogma is truth and not an "encouraged popular mis-understanding".
Im sorry to bring this up, im almost embarrassed to ask.
I was at a party this past weekend, we ate and drank very well.. sushi and absinthe;) and as party conversation happens, we talked about allot of interesting things.
Somehow, in all of this up comes the Tunguska blast. Now, one of the other guests was from Croatia and was a fan of Tesla. The conversation began discussing the most important invention in modern history (he argued AC(betraying his Tesla bias...)) but I argued the industrial revolution began without it, and that AC wasnt the end-all-be-all he suggested... ANYWAY: In this conversation up comes Tunguska. He asserts, with the corroboration of other guests, that the blast was a display of a some top-secret AC weapon that was Tesla's brainchild.
Now, they didnt guarantee that it was absolute truth, but they all had received this meme and could neither confirm nor deny its truth - just that it had been suggested. Can ANYONE provide some information on this theory? I recognize fanatical theories are often just those - this might be as big a flight of fancy as the Freemasons or alien-butt probes, the latter being more fancy to some i 'spose, but does anyone have information on this gem of a meme?
In as much as there are people in the world that want to take away the liberies that you enjoy as a Canadian
That is bullshit. The people of China dont want me to be less free. The people of Brazil want the same thing I do, to be peacfull, happy, make love to my wife, have children etc. Is there someone in Vietnam plotting to *DENY* me libert? No, they have none - THEY *WANT* more!
Why arent we helping them GET MORE LIBERTY - Instead we allow ourselves to be manipulated, like scared children into believing that as long as we 'run with the heard' (where plutocrats are directing us) that we can defend ourselves from these boogie-men.
In memory of our God, our religion, and freedom, and our peace, our wives, and our children.
Wow, how do i respond to that kind of conditioning... hmmm how about I tell you I was a Communist. I bet I would really sound crazy.

I guess their take, with "professional lives", holds true for professional killers - which they are.
This idea makes my stomach turn. Does the Army, which purpose is to defend from attack (plus all the other things they seem to be 'supposed' to be doing..those things really are another discussion), do they really need to be involved in making and marketing a video game . Training people to kill one another is a very serious proposition, maintaing 'armed forces' for international combat is a inditement in-and-of-itself of all humanity... do we *REALLY* want these idiots making a business out of it? Are we really comfortable with the idea of them selling (through marketing, branding and advertising) their 'product'?
As all things in America(TM), the US Army(TM) is just trying to work their brand into some cross-marketing..
man, I cant imagine who could have a problem with that, except maybe some godless-commie.
Maybe they can even work in some 'Enemy Pack Expansion System(TM)' where the latest evil-du-jour can be plugged in and Americans everywhere can have the thrill of bloodily slaughtering them, JUST LIKE THE REAL THING!
I for one welcome this development in the war against %whoever-we-please-at-the-moment%, it will help communicate to the American People(TM) and it will help keep you solidly behind the President, who in times of trouble should not hear any dissenting voices, but a chorus of approval.
Americans treat "America(TM)" as a religion. The arogance people dislike about America and their nationalism is really extreme and very telling... it speaks to why they are conformist, why McCarthyism is happening again w/ The War on Terrorism.
Americans dont like debate, they dont like free speach, and they havnt a clue what democracy is. Americans are asleep at the wheel of a very powerfull (at this point in history) country and it is headed straight for a tree. Terrorism is as "American" as anything, think about the CIA, the Civil War and the "American Revolution" which to the British at the time was certainly "Terrorism".
