What about the other party involved, you know, the one which pays taxes? This kind of action hurts society because the funds which would have gone to hire more police, etc. are now donations to be pocketed by politicians. Kind of reminds me of the Roman Empire.
These are examples of memes. A lot of people misuse that word, but it really is "an infectous idea." Regigion has got to be the most effective meme of all.
Is seeing the pagerank really that interesting? Granted, it might be useful for search engine optimization work, but for the most part I found it extraneous.
"Wow, this site is popular. This information changes my life in many profound ways. Yay. But not really."
On the other hand we have a country with an extremely strong cult of personality around its leader. We have a populace that is brainwashed constantly about it being under threat and the evil of the [other country].
Most admin tasks on windows can be done via Telnet.
No wonder Windows servers are getting hacked, if the "clueful" admins are using Telnet to remotely administer the boxes. In case you missed the memo, Telnet is completely and unfixably insecure.
Slashdot would be swamped with stories if they posted every security notification from every OS vendor. But to be fair, most *nix distributions do contain an exponentially greater amount of software than Windows. At any rate, this really isn't the best site to follow for security news. I recommend Secunia for that.
All Linux distributions I've used have an easy to use update system. Mandrake has the MCC (Mandrake Control Center), SuSE has YAST (Yet Another Setup Tool), Redhat/Fedora have up2date & yum, Debian has Apt, Gentoo has Portage, etc.
Don't you know that Microsoft is a big part of the BSA? Check out this statement from Ernie Ball (makers of guitar strings), who ditched MS software after a BSA audit:
"We were raided by armed Federal Marshals and completely shut down for a day. Then you have to swear you won't touch any data other than what is minimally necessary to run your business," he says. "I don't believe you should treat a customer that way." After the investigation was completed, Ernie Ball was found to be noncompliant by 8 percent. Recalling that time, Ball says, "A lot of professionals I hired went back and audited their own software and found they were out of compliance by 20 percent. It's nearly impossible to be totally compliant."

There seems to be a dearth of actual technology details on VCS, but here's a little tidbit for you: A page on Microsoft's own servers linking MS, SAIC, and VCS (near the bottom of the page).
Maybe after the FBI's Virtual Case File disaster, Microsoft Certified Partners will realize that you don't build a mission-critical application from the computer equivilant of Lincoln Logs.
The company WILL someday soon sell its DVDs in the USA, so distributing fansubs earlier will cut into their future sales.
That is also an easy argument. Fansubbing is the only way that many anime shows get exposure outside of Japan. If you take that away, there will be much less interest in the show in other markets. Of course, an importer could always bring shows over and do their own marketing -- but without some kind of fan base, that is a huge risk.
And personally, I would rather see unadultered anime with quality subtitles, than some crappy dub with content that's likely been modified to mesh better with the "local culture."
It's caused by a bug in Firefox rendering triggered by Slashdot's lousy HTMl. Should be fixed in the next FF release, until then just hit Ctrl+, Ctrl- to reflow the document.
This is a very real problem, mostly because lots of (non-techie) people insist on sending copy in MS Word format. With MS "smart" quotes automatically substituting real quote marks for their proprietary ones, it makes it a real PITA to copy from a Word document to a HTML document. Sure, some editors will let you paste the characters -- but the resulting mess will not be standards compliant.
I hate sites that instruct my browser not to store a password (like Yahoo! Mail). My computer is secure and I'm the only user, so there's no problem storing it. Good thing there's the Always Remember Password extension!
This solves the real problem for both parties

I agree that Satan would never appear with Celine Dion, but only because Celine is his avatar.
Well, that and the fact that he doesn't actually exist, of course. But if he did, it would be Celine. ;)

Remind me again: Who wrote Clinton's energy policy?
Ooh, I love trivia! Is this one like, "Who was buried in Grant's tomb?"
Yes, and where's their comparison of various databases running on Amiga, Atari, and Macintosh hardware? You call this "fair and balanced"?!

Wow, this quote works both ways!

This kind of behavior is generally known as arrogance.
Yeah, it's hard to find a CEO who will work for below minimum wage, but I'm sure Carly won't mind competing in the world market.
Let the conspiracy theorists loose
Did anybody else get thrown by the correct usage of "loose"? I've been reading Slashdot too long..
And religious fundamentalists. [tt]

Well, that and the destruction of the Alexandria library, no?
That gives whole new meaning to the phrase "cron job". ^_-

Very interesting, thanks.
Indeed. For penance, do 3 Gentoo stage 2 installs, and learn to send mail with Emacs.
