Its really simple, nobody wants to deal with the matter for the honesty of the matter. Neither Proprietary patent supporting parties nor open source patent free parties.
Why is also simple. The honesty of the matter of software would result in not only no software patents but also in genuinely free software, free in the since of making it possible for anyone to create software.
Current software development methodologies are like the roman numeral system in mathematics, where it takes specialization and trade secrets to do any complex math. But then came along the Hindu-Arabic decimal system that enabled the population to do math even beyond the experts. And the experts probably argued that only a fool would think nothing can have value (the zero place holder), as today the coding experts claim the user is not interested in creating programs. Where the fact is that users just don't want it to be a full time job requiring years of schooling and/or heavy personal pursuit. They just want to create or modify occasionally, no different than occasionally using math or a calculator to determine a result.
But the current software development methodologies do not support "occasionally". And the unnecessary level of overcomplexifabulocation in software development is the "only a fool would want to do it occasionally" false defense.
Help Prove Software is not Patentable and end this matter once and for all, and it is provable, otherwise you are playing othello, reversi.
And anyone who has been following this software patent battle damn well knows this othello, reversi game well, even if only as a spectator.
Everyone highlight everything. What this will do is make it pointless or biased if all is not highlighted. And this would raise the question of who's controlling the bias of highlights.
There is also issues that can arise regarding education and cheating, using someone elses highlights and notes. Maybe its time to get the school system involved here.
Highlighting should perhaps be a personally controlled and shared only with those you want to share with, even outside the mechanism of amazon control.

Realizing the direction of technology advancements its clear this cyber security thing is a bubble that will burst.
Considering spam is the number one cyber problem and that it is generally dealt with in addressing the symptom of people generating it, dealing with filtering the spam at the destinations rather than identifying the human generators and stopping them.....is after the fact.
It seems clear what is needed is the development of a different and disconnected (from the current network) network to handle secure communications. Where the use of it requires very clear identification of who. Like a drivers license.... dealing with security from the get go, not after the fact.
We can look as far as we can go back in space/time (see NOVA Hunting Teh edge of space and we end with widely scattered light that we cannot see past. Then we go the route of looking at the very very small (see LHC LHC experiments video
So as much as what is all happening in 2012 (what we know scientifically) there is also our point in evolution and science where we see a millionth of a second past the big bang.
