If Win8 doesn't quickly get a recognizable default desktop on desktop class hardware users will just insist on Win7.

I just reread what you posted and my agreement keeps going up. Win 8's Metro is going to be a damn disaster. Really, no kidding. This ham-handed rush to push tablet interfaces onto desktop computers is crazy. Even Gartner is saying W8 will fail. Businesses will stick with XP (or 7) and even consheepmers will scratch their heads and go, "WTF" after 10/26.

All this seems to be driven by the success over the past few years of the iPhone/iPad. But lemme axe you all a qwestium: If it was all so hellfire necessary to make desktops into tablets, then why doesn't OS X do it?

Most of the comments I've read seem to run along the "You juvenile misogynist bastard! Get with the 21st Century!" but folks, consider that if an all-male shop is running well then maybe tossing a female into that mix isn't such a great idea. Before I'm attacked for saying that, re-read the article. It creates a situation where an employee is suddenly 'entitled' not on the basis of what they've done, but on who they are. Hopefully this new hire will make a real effort to fit into the existing culture and not try to instead mold it into hers. I am NOT saying I'm in favor of bosses saying, "Sleep with me or be fired," but joking back and forth and even innuendo are just part of human interaction. Perpend: http://youtu.be/gBVuAGFcGKY

I figured it had something to do with dick-waving. I'm not a professional astronomer, don't play one on TV, but I've had an abiding love for the subject since I was growing up in the 60s. If you use the orbital argument then it makes sense, because Ceres, too was thought to be a planet in 1801 (It accorded nicely with the 'traditional' Bode's Law). It didn't take long for the scientific community to figure out thought, after Vesta, Juno, and other asteroids were found that these were just the largest members of a population of many; we now estimate hundreds of thousands. Likewise the compostional argument works in favor of demotion as well. Working outward we have rocky inner planets, two gas giants, two ice giants, and then a buttload of comparitively very tiny solid icy bodies, that when they get perturbed and wander closer, get called comets. I don't understand the emotion behind the debate. in 1801 the asteroid belt wasn't known, so they called Ceres a planet. In 1930 the Kuiper belt wasn't known, so they called Pluto one. We've learned differently. What's all the fuss?

  19. Pluto never was a planet on Is Pluto a Binary Planet? · · Score: 4, Interesting

I do not understand at all the rage over Pluto's demotion from planetary status. Is it tradition? 'Traditionally' the Sun was thought to revolve around the Earth. Is it because children have to be sat down and gently told the truth, like about Santa Claus? Is it something more personal between individuals in astronomy? It's called *science* folks, and it's self-correcting. I just don't get why people are so upset.

From what I gather the Siegel & Shuster lawsuit against DC prohibits the company from using certain aspects of the Superman mythos but I don't know which ones. The Superman being presented now is anything but the guy I grew up reading about-- they've gone gritty and dark and turned him into Batman. If comic sales are on the upswing I can't imagine it's because they're attracting new readers. Instead they retreat further and further into freakishness and fanboy pandering. I used to buy them, then I'd pirate them. Now I don't even bother with that. I hope you die DC. I hope you die a horrible death, and I hope the Siegel and Shuster heirs are there to laugh and piss on your graves.
