  1. Re:Calgary here. on Slashdot Asks: Beating the Summer Heat? · · Score: 1

Yeah there's really no such thing as humidity out in Alberta. Though in Southern Ontario? Today it's 36C, and the humidity is 45% making the humidex 45C. And that's not even the warmest it's been here, back in '88 the temperature hit 42C with the humidex hitting 57C. That was terrible, kinda like being in a really hot shower. Where you're breathing in all that misty hot water and doing nothing but choking. But cold in Alberta and it's not bad. It's just cold, and you don't feel it. Even when it's -30C. But you add in that humidity from the lakes, and -20C bites you to the core. Humidity is what gets you every time.

But really, for those with out AC, or anything. The only real option is fan's. If you've got no power, there's not much you can do. Sleeping outside in a mosquito tent is an option though, we used to do it here when we lost power. Especially a bit further up north were power outages could be common in the summer, especially in forest fire season. And where the black flies carry away dogs and cats, and mosquito's and drink a person dry. Stay hydrated, stay in the shade. Don't drink beer, don't drink things with caffine, the obvious things that make you waste fluids.

They sell it aftermarket for $299, though, it's now apparently $99 and then it's $18.95/mo for the service or $199/yr.

  4. Re:Why people still buy consoles on Bill Gates: the Traditional PC Is Changing · · Score: 1

Ultimately, it's because of two things: 1. consoles have exclusive games, and 2. the majority of non-geek users have a misconception that a PC cannot be used with a TV monitor.

The first one is pretty much bunk. Developers have been shifting heavily back to the PC the last two years. The second is more because they simply don't know, but that's because idiots in the stores telling them don't know. Then again, most video cards that have been in the "already built" PC's haven't had HDMI out until the last couple of years. Heck I've actually seen a low-midrange box that still had vga out in the last year.

Hah that's about right. The traditional PC isn't going to be going anywhere, at least not until quantum computing becomes the norm, or wetware exists. Until then there will always be a need for some type of box that's connected with low latency, and always available power, with plenty of processing and graphics power.

And with the rumored consoles coming out, and them being as bad in terms of graphics as the previous generation, I can't see why people would keep buying them.

Can't answer that, post a question on the tech or general forums chances are no.

Is identifying a profitable run and grinding it repeatedly cheating?

Nope, I do it all the time. Gold is for all things worthless, and always has been. Just a tip.

    Is using advanced macros cheating?

Nope, but using advanced macros where they play for you is.

Another problem is that Blizzard absolutely refuse to say just what they've found that's against the rules, only that they found something against the rules. Users get support replies like this:

No they're pretty clear on what's against the rules, it just requires a bit of common sense. If you're using something to play for you, that's against the rules. If you're using software the does the work for you with no user input that's against the rules. What they're trying to avoid by using that type of language is make it easier for people who don't cheat, to cheat. I realize that it's convoluted, but anyone who's on a site like /. should be able to put 1+1 together along with a simple string macro, and figure it out.

They've been doing this and exactly this since WoW. And I've been using "advanced macros" since then on my programmable mouse and keyboard and have yet to be banned.
