How about where thousands of girls were raped and used as sex slaves, but the police didn't do anything for fear of being labeled racist and even went as far as to threaten the families with prosecution if they said anything.

Really? You mean the fact that the winners of WWI basically pissing on Germany had nothing to do with it? Or are you trying to say that if you censor views and ignore the issues they bring up you're making society better. I mean it's sure working well in the UK isn't it. Where the 13yr old rape victim was arrested and charged with hate speech because she called the muslim who raped her a bad name. Or the councils and government dry washing their hands for fear of being labeled 'racist' with all those "asian grooming gangs" and threatening people who want them charged and arrested.

Which would also explain the hordes of adults that screech over violent video games/movies and how they're harming children. Or how violent video games/movies are causing gun shootings/stabbings/etc. You'll find that the young kids who can tell the difference between "right and wrong" before say 6, are the same ones who have a strong sense of self and can tell the difference between the two even now. And you'll find the kids who were entering puberty and still hadn't figured it out, still have a shaky grasp of it today as adults.

Most people on /. are desensitized to fake violence. You can see that decapitation of someone in a movie and know it's fake. Real violence? That real human suffering? Most people have never worked with EMS or police at a fatality where you can smell the blood in the air and the metallic taste in your mouth, the pounding right down to your toes and fingernails as fight or flight kicks in. There's a real difference between the two. There's also a real reason why people who do it all the time have a dark sense of humor(aka trench humor), it's one of the ways they cope with it.

Hell search the "ontario ring of fire" it's the remains of a metor impact, chalk full of RE's, cobalt, magnesium, well pretty much everything except bauxite. The current government(provincial liberals) have been wringing their hands over the resource extraction for over a decade with companies lined up and out the door to build mines there.

Why you might ask? Because they'd rather have a service based economy and not a manufacturing/extraction based economy and have gone out of their way to fuck it all up. The number of companies that have fled to NY or MI to avoid high electricity prices and taxes is staggering. Meanwhile in the USA people are able to scrutinize breathalyzers and challenge their validity in court?

No. You don't have to deal with it, they still have to prove that it's admissible. That it follows the chain of evidence, and turn over all the information to the defense so you can build your case. In Canada you can challenge the validity of all those, and radar guns in cop cars and everything else too.

In Canada however, the CEA(evidence act) allows the redaction of information if it would allow criminals to figure out a way to beat it. On the other hand, this can be used by a defense attorney to argue that they haven't received full disclosure in turn their client hasn't received a fair trial.

This will likely end up heading to the supreme court, this was only a provincial court(still federal though). If you read the article, you can see that there's multiple cases where charges have been stayed because the police refused to disclose this information. No disclosure to the defense = no possibility to actually convict.

So what it means is that the court, evidence, and crowns offices are working properly. You're still getting a fair trial and all the rest.

You are addressing the wrong problem. Storing the data is not the problem. Scanning it is. Loading thousands or millions of pages into a scanner is a mostly manual process. Who is going to pay for that? Not me.

Scanning isn't a problem, not a problem at all. When I was out in AB a few years ago on vacation I got bored and digitized a towns historical records, council meetings, town liens, etc. There was around 80 years worth of the stuff, upwards of 140k pages worth of documents. With the in-office photocopier, I got all that done in around 2 weeks. Most of the pages were in a non-standard format as well usually 9x14" or 8.5x20" sheets. The only real problems were with odd-ball sized stuff like 2.5x11" stuff which had to be manually scanned otherwise it would jam the machine. Final payout was just under $7k for my time and effort. Even at that, everything could be stored on a single 60GB flash drive.

There was a big push out in western canada to do this a few years ago after the wildfires that wiped out several towns and cities. It's absolutely doable and has been for years. They just didn't want to layout the money to do it and now they can enjoy the fruits of their inaction.

The US is around 20 years behind community oriented policing compared to other western countries. COP is based on "ground level" officers doing what needs to be done without oversight of someone higher up the chain. Rather then "down on high" telling the ground level how to deal with a problem.

ex: You have a gang problem and a drug problem. The old method is to crack down on both, arrest everybody especially pushers. Fuck everyone, they're all going to jail. COP would pick the pushers and the people without jobs out, make them informants, get the people higher up the chain and break the gang. Officers would also create and push opportunities for the low level people into actual jobs instead of crime, whether it be getting them to build their own businesses and gentrifying the area, or helping them pass under the bar for military service.
