  1. In addition to changing the user workstations... on A Public Library's Linux Success Story · · Score: 2, Interesting

They might also want to consider changing the server software. OpenBiblio looks like a pretty nice system. I'm not sure how adequate it would be though considering I have only used library software a few times lately.

  3. Re:calculators are dead on TI-84 Plus Released · · Score: 2, Insightful

While you might light having everything integrated into your handheld, there is no denying that a dedicated calculator is prefered by a lot of people. I personally would have more confidence in my calculator with button pushing than screen tapping. Tapping the screen just doesn't work as well and is definately prone to error. Don't even get me started on giving handheld devices to kids in middle school. Battery life is also terrible. The list goes on and on, so I hope you get the point.

Your reference to HP is a bit uncalled for since TI owns most of the graphing calculator business. It's definately not in TI's best interest for everything to go handheld since they don't have handhelds waiting in the wings.

I'm pretty sure this is why they offer a "1 Year Upgrade", as shown on the cover. It is meant to protect the customer against these sorts of problems with rapidly progressing technology. The only trick seems to be that you have to register. Still, it's refreshing to see book publishers offering such things.

  5. Missing the point on Downloaded Music Gets More Expensive · · Score: 1

I think that most people don't mind spending $16 for an album that will provide much enjoyment. Lots of things cost next to nothing to make (soda, for example), but people decide that they want it anyway for a super inflated price. Ever notice how much clothing is marked up? That's why so many stores can get away with 25-50% off sales and still profit.

The issue with music is that people pay $16 for CDs that only have one decent track on them. Online music stores, however, destroy this business model because now people can pay $1.25 for a song. This price is what the song should actually cost on a respectable album. The "problem" that the music industry sees is that people aren't willing to pay for all of the filler tracks any more. Maybe if they wouldn't focus on one hit wonders so much, the industry wouldn't have these problems.

  7. Reality check time on SCO Aims For The Feds · · Score: 5, Insightful

It was once said after World War II that the United States should be ready to fight two and a half wars at any point, anywhere in the world. Other conflict management is just like this idea. You can only have so many fights before you will not effectively be able to handle them all. SCO not only has too many fights right now, but their fights are way too large for the relative size of their company. Anyone who takes on IBM, an assortment of other companies, and then the United States Federal Government needs to have their heads checked.

  8. Re:Hoax? on IBM Wants to Port Office to Linux · · Score: 1

Well, you have to remember that Microsoft would have absolutely no advantage if they decided to not support Office in Linux. The only component of their monopoly, as I see it, is the Office component because Office keeps people from switching to Linux. Office keeps people from switching to Office clones because of how hard it is to get the Office file formats correctly. In addition to this, Office is ubiquitous. Microsoft makes its money off of corporations and so long as corporations can't use what makes themelves money, they aren't switching from Microsoft products.

I'm sure you would have figured the same thing a few years ago when Microsoft ported IE to the Mac OSes. The reason is simple, they needed to make sure people associated IE with the Internet. This is the exact same thing. When you think of Office products, you think Microsoft Office. Microsoft wants to keep it that way.

  9. Re:You're missing the point on Nasa Says 'no' to Hubble Reprieve · · Score: 1

As was said by another poster, "safety" is the primary reason. I think you just have to read between the lines though to see that they really mean they need to save money. This doesn't make any sense though since they are sending a rocket up to help the Hubble get into a better position to fall. Either way, NASA is making a conflicting decision.

Furthermore, if we can't service a piece of machinery in orbit, I don't understand how we are both going to the Moon and Mars. We even made it to the Moon with 60's technology, so there is no reason for why our newer, albeit outdated techonology, won't be safe for something that has been done successfully many times before.

It really makes no sense that they decided to do this. Sure, it costs money to run one mission, but after that you have years of data collection. While we may be sending up another telescope, it doesn't matter. The James Webb Telescope can do what it is special at and then have the Hubble do some other tasks. Two telescopes means twice as much data collection for minimal investment!

  13. Re:3 times the crap! on Star Wars Sequel Trilogy Rumors · · Score: 2, Interesting

While the Star Wars movies are definitely some of my favorite movies of all time, I don't know how great everyone's acting was in all of the movies. Harrison Ford was very consistant. When I think of Mark Hamill, all I can think about is him on Bespine yelling, "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" with that terrible look on his face. It was and still is very strange.

Just because you think that the new films aren't as great as the old ones are, there is a simple reason for this. All of the new ones have been hyped to no end and they will never live up to your expectations. Also, you know what's coming, the ideas aren't as original as they used to be. Don't forget that I'm sure your standard for film has been raised over the years, so the Star Wars films just don't seem as great as they once were because you expect so much.

If you just watch the movies for what they are, you won't be disappointed and might enjoy yourself. At least Star Wars makes sense. Don't get me started on the Matrix: Revolutions.

  15. Re:Better be Zahn's Trilogy. on Star Wars Sequel Trilogy Rumors · · Score: 1

I couldn't agree more. Star Wars resisted it for so long and then this series comes along and completely changes the Expanded Universe. Personally, I would have liked if Luke was given a break for once. There are times of peace in the universe after all and even the Galactic Civil War was relatively peaceful. I think it's annoying when the same style of story keeps getting written over and over and none of the writers even think to do something a long time ago (like the game Knights of the Old Republic) or start with fresh new characters that take over the original trilogy's jobs. Luke and the rest should do something not normal, like take a desk job.

The whole Coruscant ordeal is by far the most annoying. Having the power to move an entire planet is just too ridiculous, even for extreme science fiction. It's a whole order of magnitude more ridiculous than blowing up an entire planet with a laser!

No, I think that all of the people got on the IP litigation bandwagon because they figured that it would be relatively cheap with an extremely high probability with the stock increasing greatly. What they didn't expect was that the OSS community would be able to defend its product with such zealotry. After all, they aren't smart enough to know to sell their code for money, so why should they be smart enough to defend themselves in court? Right? Oh wait... they took on Big Blue who handed the United States Government a major defeat. You have to pick your fights and SCO obviously wasn't so smart taking on IBM and the OSS community at the same time.

This is called progress people and you can't get to point a to b without taking steps. Also, how many people really use Linux here for their desktop? The answer is most likely a fraction of a percent. What if they include Linux and Mac support? Should everyone with Commodores, Solaris, and non-networked PCs complain? Give the administration a break for trying to make students happy.

"Oh no! They offer Internet and I don't have a network card! I demand network services shut off for everyone until they get the sneaker net up!"

See how silly that sounds? Windows is a majority people. If Napster could make money supporting Linux and Mac, I'm sure they wouldn't neglect that portion of the market. I love Linux and all, in fact I use it quite a bit, a university with 80,000+ people can't worry about .0001% of its population's computing luxury.
