This guy is right. What we really want is 100% reliability when we are actually using whatever it is. So maybe you can make a deal with Murphy to save up all that downtime for when you are asleep.

What about the world-wide market? US companies will not be able to compete on a global scale without the newest infrastructure. Countries like Korea, China and Japan will discount the US as "an old technology country", do we want that?

  9. Federal Contracts on Open Source More Expensive In the Long Run? · · Score: 1

Can anyone explain to me why the US Government's policy on software is licence driven? I have repeatedly suggested quality products that were either freeware (VNC) or open source (Linux) and the response from the "higher ups" is always "we cannot use a product we have no licence for." I, and my peers, get soooo much training in programing (all types) and security (SANS) only to be forced onto Windows and a Sun/Gauntlet configured networks.

I expect the war on terror to cost more than any other war..ever. Not to mention the intel consolidation (Homeland defense) and NMCI (remember that $9B contract). Every industry imaginable is represented in some part of the US government. Irregardless of what industry you enjoy, get a job with a government contractor. That will be your job security. 85% of contractor positions hold no government clearance requirements (up from 60% in 1998). And maybe you could get them to pay for an investigation. One more thing for your resume.

How many times do we have to have history repeat itself before we realize that someone who lived through it just plain knows more about it. Do we want to end up like the "Foundation" of Izaac Asimov fame? There's reading about something and then there's KNOWING it, really feeling the history. If we loose that passion, we loose our humanity.

Computer criminals are being treated worse because the things that they can destroy are considered more important in this society. Face it, a life or someones sanity/dignity (only things I can think of for rapists) is not considered as important today as money or the systems that control it. A wealthy mans credit report means more to this society than a good percentage of lives that he controls. Welcome to the 21st Century.
