Yes, so true. There are so many moments in my life where I think: "My gun is so useful here, in the subway. I'm glad I got one with me every day ! This tool is perfect, hope nobody will screw it up with stupid controls"... Reading US comments feels really exotic to me.
This statement ignores that at some point that capital (I don't understand why they separate the concepts of capital and land ownership) was purchased with the results of productive activity. Instead of buying food, or theatre tickets, or going on a vacation, the capitalist bought something that holds value.
Or they the land was taken by force by an ancestor and inhereted. This argument stand as long as capital is the fruit of one's work. This might be the case, but no so aften I think...
I suggest you read this enlightning entry in the Anarchist FAQ: http://www.infoshop.org/AnarchistFAQSectionC2#secc23 , called "Is owning capital a sufficient reason to justify profit".
You may not share their views, but at least this is an argumented point.
Yes. Not supporting uncommon but probably perfectly capable device/browser is quite weird for geek oriented site ! What about the nokia N9 for example ? (with native webkit based browser, or with firefox, both work fine after you pass this stupid "Optimized for IE" style page...)
Is this supposed to be some kind of funny parody, or are you, anonymous coward, any serious about what you're saying ? Someone from the USA, do you really have that kind of people around you ???
The main reason I run Linux is because I want to use free software. Free as in Speech. I want to be able to get the source. I want to learn from others and understand. I don't want to rely on a big corporation to handle my data. I want freedom in a digital world. I'm not a consumer, I want to be an actor.
big plans for their Linux based highend OS, which was universally praised
Not by developers it wasn't.
It might have been fine compared to how people used to develop apps for Nokia Phones, but the MeeGo stuff was awfully limited looking at it from an Android or iPhone developer standpoint.
The truth is that MeeGo was a good update for pre-iPhone OS's, but could not cut it in the new world which was why Nokia was forced to partner with MS. They just did not have the resources to bring it up to scratch in time.
Well, Qt / QtCreator / QML is a pretty good platform to develop on. I'd be curious to know what part are "awfully limited" compared to say, Android ?
Really ? I just bought a brand new Lenovo T430s and everything work out of the box (Ubuntu 12.04). Previous was a Sony VPC and worked like a charm. Previous was an Asus Timeline X, and... worked out of the box also. It has been a long time since I had to fight to get my (even recent) hardware to run under Linux.
To be completly true, the Authentec Fingerprint reader on the Thinkpad does not work, but I don't care).
I also own a MacBook Pro, and it is prefectly fine to browse the web, run Aperture (but I also use DarkTable on Ubuntu, and it is really good also) and send mails. It integrates with other Apple hardware (TimeCapsule,etc...),
BUT : there are no apps. I mean, no apt-get install openldap.
No apt-get install darktable.
No apt-cache search planetarium - eh, this seems nice, apt-get install kstars, watch the sky.
And of course no apt-get source postgresql...

Making decisions without taking the people into account is becoming quite common these days in EU. Crisis is the best justification they found. When Papaandreou said he will make a referendum, he was dismissed. An ex-banker is now leading the country. In Italy, it was decided (not by the people) the government should be changed. An ex-banker is now leading the country.
See this http://www.quotationspage.com/quote/37700.html...
So the fact that governments are making EU level decisions without consulting the only elected instance at the EU level (the parlament) is quite concerning.
The point is that a derivative work is when you look at someone's work and make a similar one that you would not have produced without first viewing the original.
Yeah. Cool news for Plato's descendents, as pretty much everything in western thinking was inspired by its work. Unless they are sued by Socrates rights owner of course.
Well, except for "secret" data, aren't they just plain right ?
1) wireless on a single location is not so complicated. Having WPA should give a firly good level of security.
2) Computers for guests. Why not ? (if they work with you, assume they have access to your informations anyway).
3) Access to internet and download everything ? Why not ? (just use a fair amount of security on each workstation, first one being don't use Windows).
4) Files shares. Well, don't you give them file shares ? And buying one more 2 TB drive is not that pain, is it ?
5) Keep track of critical data. Yes, of course. Offer a saved share, an anyone will put what matters on it (of course you also backup databases, etc...). Using a multi- hard drive solution (usb) + rdiff-backup (for example) will allow you to keep a lot of data (and history as well)
6) really, your users want to do developpement ? Then they must know what they do. Why couldn't they just have a copy of the database they need ?
7) Ok, here you get a point. Some data (medical information, etc.) may need special care.
I think your users are quite right to complain.
Making several square miles of land unfriendly to human life for several decades (centuries...) in case of problem is not what I would call a cheap method. Having to handle dangerous wastes for thousands of years seems like a dangerous bet... might not be so cheap...
Canonical (the company behind Ubuntu) and RedHat, as well as a Kernel developper, have published a white-paper regarding the subject. It can be found here http://blog.canonical.com/2011/10/28/white-paper-secure-boot-impact-on-linux/
What they suggest is to let the user manage the keys necessary to allow a secure boot process on any operating system they choose.
Galileo once "turned political", that is he described scientific facts that had a political impact. No wonder he was treated like a political ! Damned pseudo scientists that go into politics !
Well... the article says the Nuclear Safety Authority _says_ there is no risk of radioactive leak. They also said the radioactive cloud from Tchernobyl stopped at the country borders:-)
Well... some of us also use computer for, say, databases. With this kind of workload, having several cores is a must. Postgresql for example is on a one process per active request model, and concurrency is impacted by having more cores. Just to give one example.
So it may not be significant for gaming, but might be for general computing...
Well, they probably are, but here in France, they are doomed to provide low end phone (the ones you get for 1 € if you really don't care). Every exciting phone has been Samsung, Apple or even LG for at least 3 years...

Why fraud when it is so simple to be perfectly legal in all these tax havens ?

I guess it works on global warmers then.
See you back in 20 years :-)
So they are hosting their site on a Windows settup (aspx)... they really deserve a nasty guru meditation.

Well. He (I'm betting he's a "he") also has a very bright sister. She's now doing a Phd in psychology. More to come, stay tuned...
First elements : you live in Australia and work in IT. You have done a lot of web development. I'll come back later with more...
Trial is taking place in Raleigh. Not anywhere close to Charlotte. Although I'm sure some non-NC people think that Charlotte is the only city in NC.
Never heard of Charlotte. Isn't New York the only city in the USA ?
