i have one windows box at home for music production, fruityloops etc. there is definitely nothing similar that actually does the same on linux, not even remotely. same goes for sound forge and plugins.
and then there's photoshop. i've used it for 7 years, and i prefer it over gimp anytime. and last time i checked, sane doesn't have support for my canon usb scanner. and there is no pressure control on my wacom tablet on linux..
my main internet box is linux though, runs apache, mysql, postgres, other junk and I just happen to like X as better environment than windows gui.
Well I seem to play KShisen, Same-Gnome and KJezz a lot. And occasional game of XBill, of course. These are all quite addictive games i think.. And I have an old 4 meg nvidia riva 128 card installed on this linux box of mine, these new 3d-thingies probably aren't quite happy with it. Quake works though, but, I have got a little bored with it few years back already..:)
Ok this is a bit trolling but you can always ban MS browsers by putting on little server side script to redirect all IE users for example to www.microsoft.com. Sure, you'll lose some hits. and definately is NOT good marketing.
Let's just first see what's the deal with this before we judge it, shall we?
what? after hitting preview, i got warning that the ip i use is disabled.. now, this is nice, my ISP's proxy server, nice job slashdot! ok i should be blaming the poor sods who use the same ISP for trolling..
well the correct answer is that it's not "42" but "forty-two". yes, they are almost similar. but not exactly. to understand why the answer is "forty-two", we need another earth-sized computer.
well, i was on E2 when this "remarkable" thing happened. actually there was quite a lot of discussion on the chatterbox about it, before and after - by various people - can't remember who - doesn't even matter, but anyway, it did generate somewhat more interest among noders than node with node_id 889842 (whatever node that is, i just threw up some random number:)
and remember, slashdot effect is nobody's friend:)
well, then, this is good! and as I said, i'm more of an Red Hat user, and well, FreeBSD too. I only tried to get the listings with apt, not with dpkg - i couldn't figure i need to use 3 different proggies for package management - dselect, dpkg and apt (whatever their relations are). and yes, I don't know much about Debian - I only played with it for couple of weeks.
ok. i'm a redhat user, but i've tested debian, just to see the wonders of apt-get. one missing feature from apt-get, is the rpm -qa | grep somestring
i get the list AND versions of packages with 'somestring', which I couldn't do with apt. i could query the whole list of packages, but it doesn't show versions. i get the version only by querying some one specific package. also, i had problems installing all the necessary header-files to compile programs, 'cause the.deb's that had the headers were conflicting each other. of course, this is not a problem of apt, but problem of packagers - and seemed like.deb's had lower quality than rpm's - more conflicts with packages and so on.
for zillion times i wished i had a button in netscape that does "clear http-auth", this is one the biggest missing features that is not related to rendering html, and it's not available afaik in any browser.
D'oh. Updates for this problem has been on redhat website since last july. if you had been responsible sysadmin, you would have get those updates when ramen was first time in news, around september.
I tried browsing the site as much as i could and only way to get that warning page was the link on slashdot. and I'm using linux netscape. so there you go.
change to *nix and you'll get things done easier; updates can also be scheduled for every night, but it's unnecessary; and you don't have to pay zillions for software licenses. just think what you could have bought with that money you lost with those licenses to microsoft.
end trolling
Anyway, if this is going to happen, i believe there will be more people moving on to *nix, most probably linux. so i heavily doubt m$ will actually do this. why would they want to lose their customers?
well, originally security didn't matter at all, and unix is not very secure unless it is configured correctly. and i'm not bashing unix here. this is just a fact.
Ah.. just installed the binary release from XFree86 ftp-site.. (actually, from mirror:) oh man, this time these true type fonts work by far better than on the previous release, scaling is correct... whoaah! Great! this rocks!
there seems to be some bugs, since some lines in my olvwm virtual desktop window go missing... but as long as this problem will not spread, it's ok. i don't know are bugs in XFree86 or in olvwm..
i don't know. didn't read the article yet. i see around me that internet has lost it's "NEW AND SHINY GOT TO SEE WHAT'S IT'S ALL ABOUT" -tag, therefore slowing down the growth of internet a bit. which i think, is good. We might get a little less crappy websites and trolls. or at least that's what i hope...:) what a optimist i am..
imho filtering sucks, but it is important. i wouldn't want my kids looking at hardcore pr0n.. anyway, i have not yet seen any reasonable filtering methods, or programs. sadly. i know, it's very difficult task...
ok those things are small enought to burn in the atmosphere but still we could hear kids say "hey ma, it's raining satellites". now i think this sounds funny but my taste of humor is rather awkward anyway.
..i just saw playstation 1 with new covers and price had been taken up again.. hmm.. i think they have put too much money on ps2 and now they are trying to take it back with refitted ps1, as people will think it's cheap when confronted with ps2, althought the price would have been about at least 10% lower just couple of weeks ago..

problem was not this; i wanted to see the VERSION NUMBERS OF PACKAGES in the list.
Gee, i wonder can people actually READ?
gee, does that show version numbers of all packages? (this is the information i want), like this:
rpm -qa | grep gno
gnome-audio-1.0.0-7
gnome-audio-extra-1.0.0-7
gnome-core-1.0.39-10
gnome-core-devel-1.0.39-10
gnome-games-1.0.40-2
gnome-games-devel-1.0.40-2
gnome-libs-1.0.40-1
gnome-libs-devel-1.0.40-1
gnome-linuxconf-0.23-1
gnome-media-1.0.40-3
gnome-objc-1.0.2-5
gnome-objc-devel-1.0.2-5
gnome-pim-1.0.10-1
gnome-pim-devel-1.0.10-1
gnome-users-guide-1.0.7-1
gnome-utils-1.0.13-1
gnorpm-0.9-10
gnotepad+-1.1.4-2
pygnome-1.0.4-2
switchdesk-gnome-1.7.1-1
xmms-gnome-0.9.5-1

remember jwz??
``Every program attempts to expand until it can read mail. Those programs which cannot so expand are replaced by ones which can.''

"BTW, what the hell is BOF supposed to stand for??"
It stands for Bank of Finland.
I tried browsing the site as much as i could and only way to get that warning page was the link on slashdot. and I'm using linux netscape. so there you go.
Now what's the difference? they all rely on the same linux-kernel, you know. so basicly they are the same. stop fighting over it.
start trolling

one more good reason to not to use M$ products.
Unix is designed to be...well...Unix. Security.
well, originally security didn't matter at all, and unix is not very secure unless it is configured correctly. and i'm not bashing unix here. this is just a fact.
those screenshot's didn't look very interesting, but that's just my opinion. hopefully those people will make usability testing.

i think unix was about 20 years old only when linus started to work on linux
although i do agree with you that it's not that revolutionary.
