    Everone would quit and form a rivial company. Microsoft would have just accquired an empty shell of a company with lots of support obligations and no way to meet them.

    The new company,"Brown Bowler", would take a few years to rebuild their distribution chanel. Them maybe go public and let Microsoft make them rich again.

    The only thing owned by Red Hat is the company name, support contracts, distribution channel, some office space and hardware, and the logo. All of the real value would just walk out the door.

    printers have always been a pain because they don't have standard drivers.

    Just ask RMS. He started GNU because he couldn't get his hands on the code for a printer driver.

    I do have an old 98 partition I use to play games. For me, windows is only good for playing games, not for work. If you want me to use windows full time, you'd have to pay me enough that I didn't need to work anymore. And then some.

    I've found that the Slackware comunity is interested in the same problem space as me, and usualy has posted a resolution to problems at least a week before I look into it.

    Just last week, I wanted to move to KDE 3.4. Some other slacker had already posted packages, which I upgraded with upgradepkg.

    Paging is what my office looks like, with parts of differnt projects hanging around.

    Swaping is what my 'to read/reading' pile looks like, a book is in the pile or it isn't.

    read the rest of the article. The fine article says which ones have drivers for different versions of MS, prebuilt drivers for linux, Bsd (which must not be dead), Mac, and if the source code is available.

    burn him a live CD and write 'boot me' on it with magic marker. Tell him that he has the legal right to make copies of it and give it to his friends. Tell him that it is the result of people treating software like knowledge to share rather than secrets to hoard.

    Then boot it in you system. Show him some stuff. Say it works even better from a hard drive, and show him that. Give him the CD.

    Patrick is my man too. But you need to count all of the people who wrote the software and other files that Patrick packages.

    And in the case of Slackware, you also need to count the people that maintain Patrick. :)

    seriously, pick an application everyone like, bring in the source, and have the students give it a new feature or fix a bug. Any text editor should be sufficient.

    would you be so good as to post your last seven tax returns, your drivers liscense, and the titles to any cars and property you own? I know that my tax dollars were used to process those documents, and I have a right to know.

    ...Most people forget that computers should only have one button.


    I tried to think of all of the usefull things that I own with one and only one button: flashlight, some of the electrical circuits in my house, electric toothbrush, signal booster for headphones, Taboo buzzer. It's a pretty short list.


    If your computer can figure out exactly what I want to do with only 1 button, you should do it without me having to press it.

    wasn't 88 about when ray tracing was just getting going? It took in the neighboorhood of 4 hours to render a single frame. 'Panning' was just repositioning the 'camera' between frames.

    you bet I do. I dream that guy's oldest son gets a PHD in enginearing and invents some cool stuff. I dream that guy's daugher becomes a doctor to treat me in my old age. I dream that guy's younger son becomes a carpenter and actualy show up for apointments.


    I dream that your kids group up and get good jobs, pay taxes, and don't have to defend their lives at gun point. And that they don't try to drive my company out of buisness with an illeagal monopoly. Is that too much to ask for?
