  1. Palm's successes on Hands-On Review of PocketPC · · Score: 2

In order to be successful Windows CE devices have to implement these:

    * Long battery life: 2-3 weeks
    * Lightweight: some are making progress but most are still not as lightweight as they should be.
    * Easy to use: the Start menu doesn't exactly translate to WinCE that much

Once these are implemented Windows CE will gain a much stronger foothold.

  2. What is proprietary anyway then? on Caldera CEO Says Linux Is Proprietary · · Score: 5

According to Caldera's CEO, proprietary is something with a software license.

Well, without a software license it's in the public domain. Once in public domain, the creator can't stop it (unless you're the MPAA ;)

Software licenses are necessary to assert the positions of developers and users. The licenses explain the limits of the users. In the GPL, the condition pressed on the users is that they have to release source code if they release another version of it. In many other software licenses it could be restrictions on copying it.

In general, this sounds very fishy. He may be backing down from Microsoft, but whatever he's doing it's not good for business.

  3. Re:New software shouldn't use GIF on Unisys Cracks The Whip · · Score: 2

    There already are, actually:

    * Macromedia Fireworks (uses PNG as its internal format but still lets you save to GIF)
    * Corel PHOTO-PAINT 9 (the GIF format doesn't appear in the File Format box unless you convert to 256-colors, which in some cases ruins em, and also allows users to get used to not using GIF)
    * The GIMP (same as Corel PHOTO-PAINT, as you need to convert to 256 colors before GIF will be ungrayed)

Hmm, maybe if I download the source and compile M15 with pgcc (with '-march=pentiumpro -mcpu=pentiumpro -Os', or maybe -O9 instead of -Os) it could be as fast as it's supposed to.

Anyways, congrats to the people at mozilla.org, and I hope it's as stable as IE right now (that's right, this is being written in Windows since I can't handle Netscape 4 bringing down X with it all the time)

Maybe this weekend I'll install it (after taking the pointless standardized tests the state's making me take)

  5. Would have to be strong on Water-Cooled Laptops From Toshiba · · Score: 4

It would have to be very strong in order to prevent the tube containing the water from breaking and damaging components. You can't fit much in a 0.75in package, including a proper water-cooled processor.

This Toshiba would have one that's pretty inefficent because there's no indication that there's a refrigerator in it. The water would get hot over time and eventually the processor would be heated up more, not cooled down. Unless there was a slot for you to add more water, that is.

  6. Accredidation on ArsDigita University · · Score: 4

I'm wondering if the reason why they need a bachelor's degree is because they aren't accredited. They could get a lot more students and the class would be more meaningful if the course was accredited. Without accredidation, the course is meaningless for those without a previous college education.

However, it is a good brush-up course for those who already have a degree. It would also be a way to reach to the people who can't afford college or can't get into it for some reason.

  7. Several already exist... on New Cross Platform Alternative To DirectX · · Score: 2

There's GTK/GDK, for the Unix and Linux platforms. And DirectX for Windows.

What we need is a merger of both, using similiar function calls. Or maybe something that simulates DirectX for Linux.

However this is still great news, compared to the recent coverage of WAVE America and the first anniversary of Columbine fast approaching. This library will finally give us the respect we need.

Careful attention must be given to the process of making this library, or it could turn into a proprietary project run by one corporation, almost just like DirectX.

  8. Is Linux really viable on PS2? on US PlayStation 2 To Have A Modem & Hard Drive? · · Score: 2

Think about it for a moment.

    * First you would need to build a cross-compiler that compiles for the PS2's CPU
    * Next you would have to get it onto the PS2 somehow. You can't just go into Easy CD Creator and burn a CD for it. Obviously Sony is probably using a proprietry CD format which hasn't been implemented into a CD burning application
    * There probably is a keyboard for the PS2, but even with this the kernel would need to be rewritten to support it.
    * No Ethernet in it, so it's only suitable for servers which don't get enough traffic to fill a 56k line

Put all that together and you'll find that you need a lot of Coca-Cola (maybe by injection) in order to make this worthwile.

    * "The law treats even legit customers as possible 'criminals'"

Protests aren't the only thing we need to do. We also need to set up a site kind of like the @dopt an MP site at www.stand.org.uk where you can fax and email your senator or representative.

Sure there's some companies like AOL who want to screw others, but without big business you'd probably still be working at a factory for minimum wage.
