  1. General Internet public doesn't care on Join ICANN and Make Your Voice Heard · · Score: 3

Most of the Internet community probably won't know what ICANN is, and likely not care. Unless there's some type of awareness campaign going on (via traditional media) to alert the world what ICANN is, then the only people that will be registering will be the geeks/hackers/sysadmins of the world.

Therefore, this likely won't make a difference at all in what new policies are enacted.

  2. Stealing -$xxx == Owner gaining $xxx on Pirates Steal Negative $1,400,000,000 from Music Industry · · Score: 0
Doesn't this mean the MPAA gained that much money? I mean, Stealing is a negative word, and minus is negative. And 2 negatives equals a positive right?

So that means they gained that amount as profit, and therefore just making excuses so they can gain more money.

  3. Crap, not again. on Yet Another Amazon Patent · · Score: 2

    This proves 2 things:

    * The USPTO's corrupt, and
    * The government and people of the country are now controlled by corporate interests

No one in the general population even cares now (they all think this is Standard Operating Procedure).

Let's hope the USPTO doesn't let it go through, and if you're really pissed, go boycott Amazon.

  4. Where's the faster connections? on Atmel Chip for Embedded Linux Devices · · Score: 3

For even telephone-quality calls to go through IP *extremely* fast connections are needed at both ends of the call. Right now most of you are running 56k modems (or cable/DSL if you're lucky).

At least DSL is needed in order to provide calls over IP. Dialpad.com has made some progress (I use it on my 56k and can hear the other side fine) but this hardware solution is needed in every home using VoIP.

  5. Travel Fund on Giving Back · · Score: 2

How about someone starts a fund which allows eligable Linux and Open-Source hackers to travel to various shows and conferences, with the person only having to pay little or no money out of pocket? This would increase the turnout of various conferences.

This could also be extended as a general legal fund in case something like the UCITA gets passed and their software doesn't work, or if a software program causes a company to get pissed enough to sue.

I don't know if something like this already exists, but if it doesn't I'd sure like to see this pop up.

  6. The source is open on Mozilla Will Be Netscape 6.0 · · Score: 2

Maybe the Slashdot people could help a bit on optimizing and debugging it (there's very few "hackers" working on Mozilla; it's mostly Netscape staff)

I sincerely hope this become stable enough so I can make a customized version of Mozilla with GPLTrans logos on it :) There's a GTK module called GtkMozilla but Mozilla's too stable to consider something like this at the moment.

  8. Re:Editorial on Letter to the Community on Andover/VA Merger · · Score: 2

Ever thought of switching to Oracle as the database engine? I haven't tried it myself, but I've heard it's being used in several large Internet portals to great success. It's not free howerver :(

If VA gives you a raise you can go ahead and buy it for Slashdot. Slashdot using Oracle if very unlikely, as it's closed-source and I know how everyone goes nuts at closed-source products.

    Just my 2 cents :)

  9. Andover.net screwed Slashdot on Letter to the Community on Andover/VA Merger · · Score: 2

Ever since Andover bought Slashdot, the quality of the articles and of the comments have dropped dramatically. Perfectly valid and interesting stories are being rejected in exchange for stories relating to Linux and Microsoft. There would be at least 100 comments in the 0 and -1 range.

The server's performance has also slowed. It would be frequently be down and would take a long time to get any sort of HTML back from them.

If VA gives Slashdot some servers and some more bandwidth to host it on, and at the same time help with making the environment over here cleaner, then go ahead. Otherwise, I think both Andover and VA have overstated their welcome, and Slashdot should split off from the combined company and run indenpendently, just like the old days.

  10. Re:Why is Slashdot so slow? on Andover.Net and VA Linux Join Together · · Score: 2

Maybe because they're biased to the point that they don't report negative news about themselves (only about Linux related information).

Ars Technica seems to be much better at providing computer-related news now, and their site is cleaner too. I'm considering switching permanantly to them.

  11. This doesn't apply in other countries though on Software And The Death of Privacy · · Score: 2

This may be true in the US, but in some other countries privacy is still respected (like countries in the European Union.)

There are several fundemental differences in the cultural environment between the US and Europe that contributed to the demise of privacy:

    * US = extreme paranoia by the government that extremist states will attack (Iraq, Cuba, etc.) This has contributed to the lack of strong encryption here
    * US = no clearly defined constitutional right to privacy

Unless these are changed I feel that the US may become the most restrictive country in the world.

  12. Commies on the Moon! on China to attempt manned space mission next month · · Score: 1

Oh no! Once the commies in China get in space they'll control our spy satelites and they'll be able to see Area 51 at last! They must be stopped!

    Just kidding.

At least now the US will lose its monopoly on space and may possibly do stuff better as a result.

  14. Protest over MPAA? on MPAA Head Valenti on DVD "Hackers" · · Score: 2
Has anyone even thought of the obvious and constitutional right to do: protest openly?

I'm sending an email to Bruce Perens and RMS about this. Here is what the mail says:

There is an article at http://www .calendarlive.com/calendarlive/movies/20000130/t00 0009450.html which was written by Jack Valenti, the chairman of the Motion Picture Association of America. (you may have seen this on Slashdot already)

Like other people such as myself, this really ticks me off. Big business is able to get mouth time and is able to write articles for the LA Times, while the people in the open-source community have little or no say over these matters and are frequently considered a negative impact on society.

While I was chatting in IRC I figured that someone should do a mass protest at the courthouse where this is taking place, or even one of the several federal buildings in this country (making sure this doesn't turn violent and cause negative publicity) As citizens we have the right to protest peacefully. If we do not do so the government has every opportunity to bias themselves toward the MPAA and to consider us as "weak."

Another possibility would be to borrow a DVD recorder and a computer that can play DVD's and record a video about how encryption isn't even necessary in order to copy and redistribute DVD's. The video would be given to the defendents' lawyers as evidence or even to the MPAA itself.

Unfortunately I can't do any of these things because of school, but I will support you or anyone else if this does take place. Thank you for letting me be heard.

A letter similiar to this could be sent to open leaders of the Open-Source movement, allowing more people to get involved in this. This is the only possible way it seems to get any action done.

(Note: for people outside the USA, try protesting outside your nearest US Embassy :)
