  1. More useful if it did color labels on Burn the CD on Both Sides · · Score: 1, Interesting

As is, it only does black and white labels. How much harder would it be to extend the process to color labels? I imagine it'd require multiple layers of different coatings to achieve the proper result, plus the use of different lasers, but it shouldn't be impossible.

  2. Here come the LAN parties on FCC to Allow Wireless Access on Planes · · Score: 4, Funny

I think I know the perfect things the airlines could offer. LAN parties. You just bring a laptop (or they could loan you one on selected flights) and you play with the people on the plane with you. I can imagine such a thing taking off, actually. Or they could just offer Internet. *shrug*

  4. PuTTY OpenSSH/Windows on XLiveCD: Cygwin and X For Windows On A Live CD · · Score: 1

I actually prefer PuTTY over OpenSSH myself (on Windows -- OpenSSH is fine on any other OS). No need to go through another layer to access the network. Other than that, wouldn't it run into problems running off the CD, especially if write access is required? Just a thought.

  6. Popup blocker? on Microsoft Releases Toolbar Suite · · Score: 4, Interesting

Doesn't XP SP2 come with a popup blocker? Why would they put another one in (besides bringing popup blocking to earlier versions of Windows)? It just seems like a waste to me.

  7. But all space missions are expensive on O'Keefe to Resign as NASA Administrator · · Score: 4, Interesting

All space missions are quite expensive. NASA has to determine whether a mission will provide more benefits than costs. Fuel costs quite a bit, as well as the training and the parts needed to build a rocket capable of going to Mars. Any benefits? Not many. That's probably why not much has been done.

  8. ACM on Where Are All of the IT Fraternities? · · Score: 1

Unless you meant fraternities that are in the Greek system, in which case I have no idea. Fraternities are about social networking and getting drunk at wild parties, not coding and playing HL2. :)

Someone needs to mod the parent up more! This is something everyone's overlooking here. The Amateur Radio service in America is screwed if this becomes reality and the ARRL needs your help. Get your ham license today!

  10. Makes no difference on Greens and Libertarians Team Up to Demand Recount · · Score: 0, Troll

In everyone's mind, Bush won. And since Ohio uses electronic voting, there's no way to do a recount since there's no paper trail in the first place. Even if there was a paper trail I seriously doubt they could overcome the 100,000 vote margin needed to win. Just my two cents.

  11. Will Bush appoint a more conservative replacement? on U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft Resigns · · Score: 5, Interesting

Is it possible that Bush will appoint a more conservative replacement for Ashcroft? That's been the danger, especially since up to four Supreme Court positions may open up this term. How would a more conservative Attorney General affect the US?

Complex systems are difficult to debug. Simple as that. With something that has as many lines of code as Windows and IE, it's impossible not to miss at least one bug. Sure, a change in policies might help, but you can never get rid of bugs. That said, Firefox does seem to have fewer problems.

Amen! Kerry didn't give me a good enough reason to vote for him, and neither did Bush. All I heard was "he's not Bush", and nothing substantial. Unless the Democrats can differentiate themselves from the Republicans, people aren't going to want to change what party's president.

  17. We can only see good from this on The Rise of Open-Source Politics · · Score: 4, Insightful

For instance, open-source style politics was the reason Howard Dean was leading before the primaries. It allowed him to reach out to more people than he otherwise would have. In general the Internet is causing the voice of the people to be heard, and we should expect more Howard Dean-style campaigns in the future.

  18. Re:What I'm wondering is... on The Rise of Open-Source Politics · · Score: 5, Insightful

A large voter bloc that always comes out to elections is seniors. To candidates, it's more efficent to cater to the issues of seniors than to many of the other issues out there (not to mention the AARP's enormous influence in politics). And contrary to what you might think, seniors care more about whether they'll have Medicare tomorrow than whether the DMCA is repealed. Maybe if more young people voted this might change.

  22. Private spaceflight on NASA Considering Early Retirement of Shuttle Program · · Score: 1

This is where private spaceflight (like SS1) would come in handy, once it matures enough. NASA could simply outsource the actual launch and mission control to these companies so they can concentrate on development. In any case, they should keep the ability for manned flight until they find a suitable replacement.

  23. Video games have NO place in the classroom. on The Role of Video Games for Children · · Score: -1, Flamebait

PriceWatch shows the cheapest "barebones" PC (CPU + mobo + case) is $56 (AMD Athlon XP 2000). $20 shipping gets you $76. Combine it with RAM and you've already hit the $100 limit (processor not included). It would have to be network boot only in order to make it, if you somehow got a free processor and/or RAM that is.
