..I demoted pluto to a non character a long time ago. I mean shit, if pluto is a dog, and goofy is a dog, then why hell can goofy walk and talk (and get laid and have kids!) and pluto can't?!
you do realize, don't you, that distributed systems aren't the answer for everything, right?
projects like distributed.net and seti@home are perfect for distributed systems b/c the data analysis can be easily split into manageable sets which can be passed off to willing participants.
If you are referring to something more along the lines of a beowulf cluster, then you should take a look at 3. of the beowulf faq.
In order for a cluster of machines to make a difference, that application has to be built for such a thing.

wasn't britney spears wearing them at the music awards the other night?
A couple months ago they were able to claim there had been no known root hacks in the current release for 3 years.
actually, it was no known root exploits in the default install for three years.
Well sometime this summer someone discovered a root hack in the released system, despite all those audits
i beleive this was resolved when some one told the guy that ftpd (the daemon that contained the buffer overflow he was exploiting) was not enabled by default.
[exerpt of note sent to bugtraq]
In that mail, he first pointed out that "your 3 years of remote safeness
have just ended", and then provided technical information for fixing a
serious ftpd bug. But he made a minor error that made the fix ineffective.
He also said that he knows of a private exploit for this vulnerability, and
in another mail pointed out that Scrippie was the one who found the bug.
The first reply that came was a short one:
"ftpd is not enabled in the default install since 2.6."
dude, that's nothing.
when I read this, I went and grabbed our nt admin by the scruff of his neck, dragged him to my cubicle, and beat his head into my moniter screaming, "Now who's vaporware, BITCH?!?!?!"
now here I am at kinkos on their crappy little rental macs.
Someone over there has got to be reading! Let me have a crack at one guys! (Course, if they don't the conspiracy theorists will know why: and don't say "Rob Doesn't Live in Seattle" cuz thats to easy. Course who am I kidding: The microsoft conspirators are to busy saying the xbox will the crappiest system ever without ever touching one. I just see it as Microsoft's way of saying "We're not a monopoly. Promise!" as they attempt to swallow another industry. The system may very well rock).
dear lord taco, lay off the coffee late after 5pm.
where I work, we've got netscape suite spot setup.
It's got the netscape messaging server, directory server, pop and imap servers, as well as collabra (it's own news group server). This is working for us fine. A major advantage of this in your situation would be that you don't need to add 20k to your cost of starting the operation as you've already got the necesary hardware to run it all (our setup is running on a single ultra 60 w/ external raid 5 controller). Calendaring is a little trickier. We've had to hunt around for a decent third party vendor (working on our second trial now) but that's not a major issue. 100% of the company uses email while maybe only 20% use some sort of calendar.
hope this helps.
whoops. meant to post something there...
anyway, as I was going to say.
it seems as though there's a lot of resistance to companies trying to come up with new ideas to force old world thinking (buy your music at the wharehouse) and new world thinking (download your music off napster)to meet.
I didn't see a lot of positive feed back on the napster going subscription story a few days ago, and timothy just can't seem to say something nice about this one either.
I could see this working a lot better if all the music on the Web was pristine and complete -- which it's not.
well, propose something better. propose something feasible that's better than what big bad big brother has come up with and go make your fortune. I garuntee that there's a fortune to be made.
Maybe these questions were just hideously generic (is this wrong, is this right), but I didn't see a whole lot of difference between these candidates.
Could it be that these candidates just don't have concrete opinions formulated about this (relatively) new medium, or are they all just advised on technological matters by the same people?
we (the US) have been doing this for almost as long as there was a US. People will recall the influx of chinese rail workers followed by immgration quotas in the 20's. There was also the braceros program where we brought, literally, as many mexicans as we possibly could into the mid west as farm workers before we expired their visas and sent them home.
Look, I personally think it's lame as hell, but people need to understand; this isn't a fucking melting pot! This country takes the best and brightest from every where we can, chew them up, and then spit them out. As fucked up as it is, that's *how* it is. Until the educated, skilled workers stop leaving their country to come here, this will continue.
you can no longer download this program at all anymore.

There is nothing wrong with using a licensed DVD play to watch DVD movies on, I don't understand the point you're trying to make. They haven't sued anyone under those conditions.
But they have,or have you not heard of Jon Johansen. Granted, he wasn't arrested for partaking in (c) (viewing (a) under (b) ), he was merely arrested for making (c) possible (actuall, my understanding is that he was arrested for making a gui for (c) ).
I haven't quite figured out weather or not you're karma whoring, and just don't the facts, or if you really are as ignorant of the issues surrounding DeCSS as it seems. Regardless, This post shows your inability to follow anothers (different) train of thought.
For all the propaganda surrounding this issue, go get your ass on over to opendvd.org.
I hope this helps.

just kidding, I actually think that this is a really good thing. especially the line bellow it:
If you like it, you can pay us to add new features to it that you
need, buy a support contract, or pay us to port it to another OS.

And while I'm on a rant, don't check what resolution I'm running at, then resize my browser. Maybe I don't want to run my browser maximized.
now I don't know from personal experience *cough*bullshit*cough* but I think it's only pr0n and warez sites that maximize your browser windows...
