Remember: the RIAA will have an establishment fined if they do not pay the RIAA extor^H^H^Hfees on live performances of original music written and still owned by the performer. And then they won't give the "royalty" fees to the owner of the music, because he did not go through them in the first place.
One problem is that, apparently, the MPAA and RIAA have the right to charge you for displaying things they do not have the rights to. They make quite a killing demanding royalties and then not paying the creator, regardless of his opinion, even if he is the one making the performance.
And if you do not pay them to show movies/music you wrote and performed, they can ensure you receive massive fines.
I thought this was perfectly normal in many industries. Remember the SNES CD addon that became the PS1? And how 3G and 4G mean whatever the company wants at the time?
I do believe there is this thing called a "gag order" in the United States. And a special gag order that is itself under a gag order, if they can make you look like enough of a bad person/pay the right people enough.
A large enough company can totally ruin your day if they want to.
The answer is the same as with nearly every other law, even the good ones. The parliamentarians in question are the ones who have bank accounts that always get bigger thanks to "campaign contributions".

Except for that one law that says that it's not an excuse. You ARE required to know the law or face the consequences, laws of nature be darned.
