I believe you are completely correct that Apple are a juggernaut and only a fool would bet against them in the short- or mid-term. But I think you're wrong here:

Once it is clear that Apple can (and will because they have lost the agency model) match Amazon's prices and is in the ebook business to stay, Amazon won't be so anxious to lose money.

Apple has yet to release a serious reading device. I know people who enjoy reading on their iPads, but I've never met a single person who preferred it to e-ink, having tried both. I wonder how Apple's and Amazon's ebook sales compare?

I don't follow the logic here. The world is full of countries that would not assure mutual destruction if we were to wage nuclear war on them. What about AMB technology is going to seriously change the status quo? 22. Re:There's this little problem with Ender's Game on Teacher Suspended For Reading Ender's Game To Students · · Score: 4, Informative

Ender is a school child who kicks another school child to death in the school bathroom. Nobody has any question that it's happened, but not much seems to happen to Ender because of it.

Because of this particular scene in the book, I've always felt that it should not have been promoted as a children's book. I have also felt that Orson Scott Card is, IMO, unsavory for cooperating in promoting it as a children's book.

Spoiler alert: it's a pattern that foreshadows what happens at the end of the book. He lashes out in self defense against threats to his survival (or perceived threats) and immediately regrets it. It's not his fault that he kills. It is the fault of those who manipulate him and his peers so that these life-or-death conflicts keep occurring, without outside intervention.

  25. Re:The problem is the length of the games on Can $60 Games Survive? · · Score: 1
I think this is a false dichotomy between long and short games. I want "long games" that are like Oblivion or Skyrim. They let me take what I want and leave the rest, creating my own adventures as long as I care to. I want "short games" like portal, that tell me a story and don't require the obsessiveness of a 14 year old to experience in their narrative fullness.

When I stopped buying video games, the average game took me about 60-80 hours to finish.

My friends now regularly finish games in as little 12-15 hours.

So where I paid $40 for my games, about $0.50/hour play time at best, my friends are now paying about $2-4/hour, and that's not even ten years later.
