    Also I would like to add that ATI's linux drivers only support 24-bit color mode. That means you can't switch, at all. Which makes thinks like playing warcraft III under winex impossible. NVidia has no such issue, as they think out their drivers. My next card after this horrible ATI 8500 will be a nvidia, mark my word.

    On a side note, ATI's catalyst drivers in windows XP are OK, but you have to do thinks like change the refresh rate in their control panel. If you tell XP to run your monitor at 100 refresh rate, it won't until you do it in their control panel which is a pain.

    The TCO is lowered because you don't have to pay for a windows server license, terminal server license, and citrix. While you do have to pay for crossover's license, it is significantly cheaper than if you add the above up.

    For years we have been bitching about not having nvidia drivers for freebsd, and now that they have made substantial progress and released a alpha/beta all we can do is bitch that they are unfinished? Lets give them a hand, they are making progress and obviously care about their customers.

    While his window manager, enlightenment, has been dead for awhile now (while he worked on e17), it does not mean linux on the desktop is dead. Just because the E team can't compete with the kde/gnome teams does not mean that desktop development must stop, it just means he can't handle it.

    Odd, please post the links to these closed source ATI drivers, I have yet to find them.

    They have drivers for their other cards, but not the radeon.

    I got a radeon 8500 right now and I regret the day I ever bought it. No 3d acceleration support in linux. Until they fix that the next card I buy will be a nvidia. Anyone know when ATI plans to make drivers for their cards for linux?

    Just a FYI, many people use debian because it is so much easier to use than redhat.

    Installing gnucash on redhat: rpm -ivh gnucash, then a billion dependancies pull up, forcing you to got to rpmfind.net and pray to find the right versions of the libaries.

    Installing gnucash on debian: apt-get install gnucash. All dependancies are resolved. I use debian because using any other package management system (besides portage or ports) is simply way to much trouble

    Maybe you are missing something. It is ILLEGAL for them not to give the source code if someone who bought the beta requests it. They are breaking the law. When I create a GPL program it insures that anyone who comes across it will also have access to the source. Lindows is violating this.

    Did anyone else read the part that the thing only runs for 10 minutes? Oh what a bargain. Buy all the watercooling stuff and have it work for 10 minutes at 1ghz. Woohoo.

    The important thing to reconize is that mandrake FUNDS the software they use in their distro. They fund many programmers to work full time on open source software. They are not a distro that just takes your money for themselves, they help the community.

    Doesnt anyone remember their donation to debian also?

    I would just like to remind everyone that performance is great, but not at the expense of security. Does anyone remember that example of the compile that inserted its code into the login command?

    Without this compiler being open source, how can anyone trust it? Who is to say that the FBI program is not in the code, and won't provide them a easy backdoor into our systems?

    September 29th - Much kernel patching going on. The -ac kernel tree seems to be turning into the stable tree as Linus merges odder, weirder and more alarming things. I just hope he knows what he is doing.
