Come now! I see many people espousing the myth that faster computers make lazy programmers. Do any of you people claiming this write code? Have you looked at other people's code? I don't know about you but where I work stuff is tight. Not a bubble sort to be seen. If the code gets sloppy it's not lazyness, it's MARKET DRIVEN. Sheesh...get a clue. ANd put those VBRUN DLLs away before you hurt someone.
How many times do you get a document soley to read it? I often get docs and am required to mark it up, make changes, etc... Can't do that with a viewer. Maybe if non-MS word processing packages had "file format plugins" the makers could release a Word00 filter at the same time Word00 is released, and not have to wait till the next version of their software. If, that is, Microsoft is forth-coming with their file format info. And offer 100% of the info...not just a subset to ensure their monopoly...
All the touchy-feely bullshit on the web. Countless self-absorbed homepages, insipid rantings and more. Electronic Navel Gazing I'd say. Dennis Leary was hilarious, especially that one advert with the kid crying about keeping the net free, and Leary pops up to ask how his mom and dad paid for the computer he was using...
The Federal government took it from you in form of taxes, and now will only give it back if you follow their rules? That money should never have left the local gov't. I'm convinced the dickheads in D.C. are clueless....Vote Libertarian
Those who are polled, cold, like the Time poll you mention do not understand how genetic engineering works. If 20 years ago they did the same poll about breast implants, you'd likely get a similar result. It's not lack of desire, it's fear of the process out-weighing the desire. Once it is a proven, low-fault process, everyone will be genetically enhancing themselves/offspring etc...
Programs that don't use all the CPU??? C'mon, even the fastest Xeon won't run Quake3 smoothly enough to make the average gamer happy. We'll use all this great technoogy to make better video games. Easy.
Really people...you've learned (on windows) to save often lest your machine crash and work be lost. So.....backup every day. Are there ZIP drivers for Linux? Hell use floppies and a script to GnuZIP your work directories and dump them to floppies. It is easy when you get in the habit. It is very much worth your while....trust me on this.
If Cindy is dumb enough to run executables sent via eMail, she is a fool. Especially if mail headers show it didn't originate from her trusted friend and infact was forwarded. People must learn these things! I have hope...users have been succesfuly taught to SAVE before turning off the computer...they can be taught these skills as well.
Unless you're talking about satelites, which beam the energy down to earth (And you thought the powerline-cancer scare was bad....) I suggest you look a little deeper...
Screws are glued? I have a beige aptiva, but the case looks cool and it matches my big ass monitor. Let me know if you have any success swapping out the guts. I want to do the same myself.
Reuse of Commercial Cases?

I might try and stuff a new Motherboard and such into my Aptiva case. I like how it looks, and it matches my sweet 21" monitor....how fashionable! Time to do some measuring....
The 2-CPU card can only work with a special motherboard. Big Deal. So Buy 2 socket MB from a reputable manfuacturer...this whole things seems very deceptive...
I've found many sweet looking cases on the 'net. The only thing is, I can never tell if they'll match up with my motherboard. I don't want the heartache of ordering a slick new case to find out my stuff won't fit. All the local computer fairs only seem to have the generic beige boxes...I'm a form-follows-function kind of guy, but hey, if I'm dropping a couple grand on a fast PC, I want it to look good too!
I'd rather give my taxes to NASA than to the degenerates down the street who hang out on the corner all day and night drinking and smoking adn fighting. Just my thoughts...
Cetainly not 95% of the population of SlashDot users. Oh, and maybe you should...you know...next time there's a civil war in your backyard, the American's might be dropping bombs on your head...
Thats spooky...
"wow look at the big fire"

Yeah but they aren't very cooperative...
Logic means nothing in tech-stock trading...

Geeze...RAM is cheap these days son! So is CPU.

I'm soooo sick of the knee-jerk anti-go'vt attitudes here. It's good to question authority, but a little moderation please...

I don't think USB has the datarate you need for storage...maybe 'firewire' does...Have you considered external SCSI?

Say what you will about Lotus software...it's generally true...but I'd hardly say IBM hardware is poorly made...
