Sorry, it's like 'drugs' and 'terrorists'. I don't buy for a second that the supposed threat merits the incredible reductions in privacy and rights the current 'cure' requires.
Life isn't precious to this government, so all this crap about 'for the children' really means 'for more governmental power'. I think of all the poor Iraqi children now dead thanks to our governments' actions and I think "American parents need to step up...they've been mooching off of the tax code forever...wI give them money so they can have the children they chose to have...why must I keep giving up freedoms for them too?!"
I just can't get upset about US children being involved in porn, when there are children all over the world being straight up murdered. We have the blood of many many Iraqi children on our hands...let's fix that shit first.
Sucks, but it is the truth. No matter what your joe-jobbing patriotic friends say about America, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. The worst part? Many people in this nation think the rich got rich because of *snicker* merit.
I understand your point. I personally ignore any and all laws if I can get away with them, because why should I obey our law when my government won't obey international law? WHy should I toe the line when police officers abuse the law they supposedly enforce.
Railing against the assholes doesn't seem to help any, in my experience. It just makes you more bitter. Do what you feel is right, and fuck the rest of the scumbags.
What if the trees do offset his carbon usage? What if they more than offset his carbon usage? We certainly need to re-tree South America and other regions to re-build our rainforests and other forests. While this happens, technology advances and we all start produce less carbon as a result. Improved powerplants, different products made available, etc...
If we were all to suddenly stop our consumption, economies would be unable to absorb the change...bad things could happen.
Also, many people are fat, dumb and greedy and won't change quickly. We need to mitigate their selfishness because they won't do it themselves. Carbon credits have value, and they aren't the only technique we will use, so I think you should chill out about them.
If you can't figure out concurrency from theory and pseudo code, you're a hack. You must first understand the theory, then worry about how to implement it. Besides, Java has so many tools and support systems for concurrency that you'd have to be a lunatic to try to develop that in C++. Hardware is cheap, talent is not.
He's the stupid one. Now, this isn't to say that Netflix's policies are not evil, but come on! What geek in his right mind would buy into one of these restrictive DRM schemes in the first place? Perhaps he thought that Netflix would wise up and do the right thing by the customer...I just can't understand why one would buy into these schemes and not expect to get burned.
I mean, if you're a real tough guy you'll just burn the fucker's house down while he sleeps inside of it. When he flees the building, then you go to town with a 8lb baby sledge while his children watch.
(If you're gonna call 'pussy', you really should come with something more hardcore)
If you can't afford a shitty 10-year-old 27" TV, you really need to get the fuck off of Slashdot and go back to school so you can get a real job. You can afford to buy these DVDs, but not a proper set? Yeah, you're a fool. Like those guys living in a shit-hole apartment so they can have a fancy car or something.
I bought Stone's "Alexander" used on DVD for 5 bucks and didn't notice till I got home that it was 'fullscreen'.
Utter. Shit. The plot itself was weak, but the visuals were what sold the movie to me. Visuals completely destroyed by pan-and-scan that ensured I saw a character's head while speaking but cut out so much of the scene.
This may sound harsh, but I consider anyone who 'prefers' pan-n-scan to be a soft-headed half-wit.
I grew up in a cheap tract house from the 1970s, and even those builders got it right. The old (old!) rule for US electricians is that you wire the switches so that when you are looking at the switch plate, the left most switch controls the left-most fixture from your point of view. Draw a line out from your body thru the structure to each fixture and the work is done for you.
It shouldn't be too hard or expensive to get someone to reconfigure those switches.
I think we should swing the pendulum all the way in the other direction, but then again I am fairly bitter about this whole culture grab by corporations.
I'm none too happy with the powers given the the FBI, and I don't intend to help them out. Just feeling a little bitter about the government not holding up their side of the 'social contract'.
You had the kid knowing full well what the world was like and how it was trending. Now you want everyone else to change so your job of raising a child will be easier. Forgot to account for changes in society, eh? Did you assume that we would remain static?
It's not up to YOU to decide what I can or cannot see as an adult taxpaying citizen who subsidizes your child.
Sorry, your invocation of the over-protective parent does not inspire me to accept your censorship. Rather, it makes me think "Wow, that piece of shit parent needs to get a reality check and stop trying to reduce my liberties because they can't raise their child to be as repressed as they would like due to freedom of speech."
You kid, your problem. You don't like that Americans like porn and boobies? Move to fucking Saudi Arabia to get your theocracy fix.
It's a culmenation of several issues that have reached critical mass for me.
If I want to view some of my own society's culture (which in this modern age is being done in video) for free, I must go to a library and attempt to borrow the item to watch at home, or watch it there. Shit made 50 years ago is copywritten into the middle of this century. WTF?
If I want to Rip and Re-Burn a purchased DVD so I need not sit through the copyright warnings etc, etc, I must break the law
Copyright law and lobbyists on behalf of the copyright owners are doing their best to reduce the things I can do with the content I purchase legally.
DRM preventing me from backing up an item I supposedly only own the license on, but I still have to buy a whole new disc if the one I have is destroyed. If I'm licensing it, why can't you send me a new disc for a few bucks?
There might be more but I must be going now. Basically, I see copyright law as being poisoned against the citizen when the free market that those copyright owners love so much should be used to see if the product is worth what they are selling it for. Make them drop the prices until people would rather buy legit than pirate. Don't restrict what I can do with it on my own equipment.

I'd rather be raped than dead.
I think this is awesome. Oh no, the FBI might not get a few pot smugglers or coke or heroin movers. Oh NO!

I suppose I could always bite the bullet and buy non-Intel/non-AMD systems. Price would be high, but it beats supporting a douchebag company.
'Act of god' or whatever. They will never take responsibility, only your money.
My current system is an old AMD dual system, and with the way Intel is acting on the world stage, I'm sticking with AMD for my next system.

Keep the government out of my ideas!

The news will do that to you. Stupid and Fat? Part of the reason my TV is old is that I spent a few hundred bucks on exersize equipment and I use it.
Most TV programming does suck, but it's quite often several levels above the 'discourse' here on Slashdot!
It's a business relationship, and if you go deeper than that, you're a sucker.
Service sucks? Quit the losers and move on to something better.
Sure, you'll lose some of your investment...but I'd rather lose some of my money than my self respect. Not that much remains of the later.

You bring your child into proximity with adults, expect those adults to continue their adult behavior.
You had the kid knowing full well what the world was like and how it was trending. Now you want everyone else to change so your job of raising a child will be easier. Forgot to account for changes in society, eh? Did you assume that we would remain static?

Seems we are at a crossroads here...

I have a few Sylvania bulbs (towards the more expensive side of the spectrum) that have been going since 2002, easily 8 to 10 hours a day.
Check your wiring, it may be crap.

Copyright laws has gone too far in protecting the content owner for too long. I see no reason to support current copyright law.
