    It's not one kind of law vs. another. Laws that prevent people from dumping used motor oil in their backyard might be considered authoritarian by the self-centered dumper, but the rest of us appreciate efforts made to keep our water cleaner. I see there being a spectrum in which an action might affect the person more or less than the group. The implication made by he original poster and yourself that there is some line of demarcation seems more disingenuous than my 180-degree twist on the original poster's statement.

    In my graduate CompSci program, it is older white guys (late 20's and up) part-time on the company's dollar and younger indians full time on whatever they can scrounge up.

    Personally, I wouldn't bother getting a graduate CompSci degree if my company wasn't paying for it.

    Regimes can only really be replaced from the inside. This is why our military is such an utter failure in Iraq. Since the Chinese people don't have the grapes or the desire to over-throw the oppressive Commie regime, I just don't care about what happens to them because it's NOT MY BUSINESS. The actions of the Chinese government do affect me through their lack-luster quality standards. It just so happens that the only way I can affect the Chinese government is to affect their economy as best I can...and the best way to do that is to buy as little of their goods as possible.

    Coal has hidden costs, such as the effect of the additional carbon in the atmosphere and the pollution from the plants. We should un-hide those costs, and put them right in the purchase price so people can make informed decisions when choosing their energy sources.

    When government is malfunctioning, it is our duty to point that out, not to just 'go along' with the malfunction. Yeah she might have guessed that this shirt would cause a problem, but so what? Do you advocate that black people stay out of white suburbs because the cops there tend to harass minorities? It might be the safe route for the minority, but it isn't right for our society. You'd probably tell Rosa Parks to move :P
