Whats the chance that they'll make more money on the advertising and just give the game away.
...about the same chance that cable companies would have made cable free once they accepted advertising on almost all of their channels. Why replace one revenue stream with another if you can keep both?
Remember the FCC is the group that seemed to have only one mission a few years ago.. STAMP OUT HOWARD STERN. Do you have any doubt that if given the opportunity they wouldn't stamp out porn as well? Don't get me wrong I don't think they will be given the authority to do so.
...and how well have they succeeded in that mission?
Dell doens't want to have to offer support for machines running Ubuntu Linux. FreeDOS is easier to support. If the end user wants to put Ubuntu, FeeeBSD, etc, on the machine they can do so without Dell having to support it.
Was there supposed to be a link for this story? The idea for an MMORPG sounds like an interesting one, and I was expecting to read about why it never panned out.
- Did a high level manager can it? - Is the MMORPG field too crowded? - Did production start and the company folded? - Did the initial testers hate it?
Hmmm...not a lot of details on the network card. A few thoughts:
- when you type "iwconfig", the device node of the network card should show up with some details (e.g., eth0 or wlan0). Did you try "ifup --force wlan0"?
- if you have WEP enabled on your wireless router, you need to specify the key. It's not a bad idea to specify the ESSID of the router too:
iwconfig wlan0 essid home iwconfig wlan0 key s:a13charwepkey
Then ifup --force wlan0
Or you can specify the whole actual WEP key (you should be able to see it in your router's configuration page) in the second command by not using the "s:" prefix:
iwconfig wlan0 key AD341254DF234FE345C287AE31
This is sometimes necessary, even under Windows, for 104/128-bit WEP since some routers and some network cards don't turn passphrases into WEP keys the same way, so the same passphrase generates different WEP keys.
RTFA. This little tidbit was at the bottom of the "New Hampshire" page from freepress.net:
(Note: HB 653 was reportedly introduced to encourage, rather than discourage, public entry, and it has many positive features. Furthermore, there may be ways to read or clarify some of its provisions that could be interpreted as potentially restrictive.)
I wonder how many other states' bills include favorable provisions.
1. Add minutes to end of shows 2. Decrease TIVO usage 3. Viewers TIVO something else and watch that instead, or grab an MPEG of the show from BitTorrent. 4. Less Profit.
...it's meant for PC vendors. Currently, you'd buy just the hardware from the PC vendor, since no one can afford the OS, and buy the OS (Linux or pirated Windows XP) from a street vendor. If an inexpensive version of Windows exists, the PC vendor could buy it, put it on the PC, and you're stuck paying for it when you buy the PC. It's the Windows tax, updated for the rest of the world. That's the only explanation for this venture I can think of that makes sense.
I'm running 98 under 1024x768 here at work. Also, I noticed that 98 lets me log directly onto an NT domain whereas XP Home won't except through a VPN connection. Given that, I would argue that XP Home's networking capabilities are a *downgrade* from Windows 98...
I was unable to get it working with the default kernel installed by FC2. Apparently a couple of nono-stnadard patches were added by RH to this kernel, and AFAIK the current clsoed-source nVidia GeForce drivers won't work with it.
I downloaded the stock 2.6.6 kernel, and was able to get nVidia's drivers up and running just fine.
LOL - It reminds me of one of my favorite Dilbert cartoons, in which the Pointy Haired Boss tells his secretary that his title is "Director Of Product Enhancements", and to stop referring to him using the acronym......to which she replies, "I didn't know you were Director Of Product Enhancements".
I was a little surprised not to see Neal Stephenson's Quicksilver on the list, a book I've heard many people (including one of the authors up for a Nebula in the Novel category) describe as a shoe-in for both the Hugo and Nebula. Did it not qualify due to time contraints or something?
Blizzard offers just about all of the music for Diablo II and the expansion pack as 128-kbps MP3's for free download on their site. You don't appreciate the complexity and depth of the music until you hear it while you're not playing the game. The liner notes are amusing to boot!
I've dumped them all to a CF card on my Zaurus and am listening to them now:-).

This will probably make MS a little money, until the embedded industry moves en masse to a free file format. If they do, the file formats for PDA's et al move away from MS's (FAT) standard - something that mas long-term repercussions for MS.
The profit margin isn't that great on PDA's et al as it is - why would the industry want to cede a further chunk of that margin to MS? All you'd have to do is include a driver for a free file format with the PDA cradle, card reader, and/or desktop application.
This is one of the really great things about being a computer geek that puts us up there with auto mechanics, plumbers, lawyers, and anyone else with a skill the average Joe needs but doesn't want to pay full price for. I get a lot of home-cooked meals, free beer from the storeowner down the street, extra hardware from people who ask me to replace an older part with a newer one (I replaced a DVD-ROM recently with a DVD bruner, and took home the DVD-ROM), and inherit a lot of older computers when their owners buy a new one:-).
They should license WineX, throw it on a CD with Max Payne 2 and shrink wrap it. It should be sold at the same price as the Windows version.
While I'd love to see it happen, it won't. It would save the company the cost of development of a Linux version, but they would then be on the hook for support of Max Payne 2 running under Winex3 and Linux, which may very well erase any profits they would get from having it there in the first place.
They could put a disclaimer ("here's Winex3, you can use it if you're l33t, don't call us if you can't get it to work."), but if it's on the CD people are going to expect to be able to call if it doesn't work, and they would then have to turn away those callers, which wouldn't win them a lot of friends in the gaming community.
This is the game I keep giving up... and the game I keep going back to when I'm bored with whatever else I'm playing. As a dyed-in-the-wool necromancer, sitting at 1.09 for a year plus was pretty frustrating. I'm looking forward to trying out the new synergies and seeing the new items.
Props to Blizzard for doing the right thing and retooling D2 to balance things out. The extra goodies are just icing on the cake!
Unless you absolutely need the pliers, consider switching your full-sized Leatherman out for a Leatherman Micra, which will fit on a keychain without leaving a noticable bulge in your pants:-).
I read this as marketing shorthand for "create open-source MMORPG's". Time will tell.

I didn't know the MPAA was a legislative body
IBM makes a boatload of cash off the patents that research generates. Selling/renting out their patents is a service - isn't it?

When you run the installer on a Windows 98 PC, it pops up a message that reads: Gmail Notifier requires Windows 2000, XP, 2003 or newer.
I guess I won't be using this on my work box...
