Scientists thought that the area around Chernobyl would be a wasteland for decades. Instead, it's now a flourishing haven for wildlife (at least, according to Wikipedia).
In regards to the General Theory- As the creation of a single mind, it is undoubtedly the highest intellectual achievement of humanity. (Boorse, Motz, and Weaver; The Atomic Scientists)
The BBC article is about one case of fraud. There was no mention about other arrests or trials. One of the defendants got a 2 1/2 year prison sentence for a $242 million scam. Compare that with Bernard Ebbers who just got a 25 year prison sentence in the US. I don't see this as a turning point in stopping Nigerian scammers.
I bought T2 Extreme recently. To play the WM9 version you need a fast processor. My 1.8 GHz P4 couldn't play it, but my 2.4 GHz with 800MHz FSB could. I had to register my copy of the movie and then the InterActual DVD player has to acquire a license via the Internet whenever I watch it.
Here's the kicker- I played the HDTV version alongside the MP2 version and I couldn't see a dramatic difference in quality.
Personally, I equate IT professionals with doctors and lawyers- we're all professionals who deal with complex systems that everybody needs but few understand.
Put yourself in a customer's shoes. If you went to a doctor or lawyer with a problem, under what circumstances would it be OK to hear "No"?
I'm guessing that Topica is spearheading this. They've been trying to whitelist themselves for months. They just had a falling out with Habeas. They're hosting the mailing list for ESPC.
Los Angeles did make an effort to encourage people to buy electric cars- reserved parking with free charging, special lanes on the highway,... Imagine if LA made electric cars available via a Zipcar program? That could have been their public transportation solution. Much more practical than a subway too.

I love Mr. Chrichton's novels because they're original. Not this time. Prey is a mixture of past themes: dangerous organisms at a research lab in the desert and an isolated group of people being stalked by dangerous predators. Plus a "Sixth Sense" style plot twist.
I would recommend Andromeda Strain, Eaters of the Dead, Congo, Rising Sun and Disclosure instead.
I still subscribe to The Week. The print edition has translations of articles and editorials from around the world.

They're not all wrong. Alexis de Tocqueville predicted that America and Russia would become rival superpowers back in 1835.

It would be interesting if Google Base entries would allow visitors to post replies. It could become a super Usenet. It could even replace blogs.
I don't think the Russians used computers to beat the Nazis.

Out of my last 25 Hotmail spams, 2 were transmitted by web form and the rest by the DAV exploit: a 2200% increase!
What increase? 92% of his spam sample from Hotmail exploited the DAV bug, but what 2,200% increase is he talking about?

The author of the Forbes article is Gary Reback who is a notorious anti-monoplist.

It wasn't a patent issue. The guy was simply claiming that MS was infringing on his trademark rights.
