Skyrocket? Seriously? (fortunately, there's many replies on this regard so I won't repeat the arguments)
"At least if you die from cancer you get to say goodbye to your family." wow. If you ever got cancer because of these "security measures" I doubt you'd so quick to dismiss the issue.
A) It can be practically challenging depending on what is it you want to implement. It can be easy to implement crappy software but thar would be the same for every industry, if you suck at what you do, you're going to be one of the million.
B) People can do it if given teaching? Sure, but somehow, they don't get taught or they don't follow through with their education or they're just not interested in learning that.
C) Your last question kills me. I LOVE programming, I wouldn't rather be a game designer than a programmer. Not at all. I'd enjoy having game design decisions as I implemented the code but would hate to abandon the coding part. Then again, you talk about a crappy industry with crappy pay, crappy hours and lots of exploitation. Most likely, I wouldn't work in the game industry altogether.
Reducing speed limits can only go so far, at some point, people start disobeying those limits unless you're breathing behind their necks with police and radars (which doesn't seem like an adequate or cheap solution)
That said, an automatic car would probably make lower speeds more tolerable because you'd be able to focus on some other task.
On a second note, I'm sure that victims of said accidents (and their families) will appreciate the prevention even if it's quite low compared to other numbers.
20 died because of problem A but 1000 die because of problem C 20 is quite low compared to 1000 but if you can avoid it, why not?
It doesn't matter whether you consider it simple for yourself. Drunk driving and sleepy drivers cause a lot of accidents that could be prevented by this sort of automation.
Also, prices drop when a technology starts gaining widespread usage.
You could also pay full attention to the people you're driving with, read, work, etc.
And I'd wager that, if you ask around, you'll find a lot more people who will guess a red thing means stop and a green means go/start/good in just about ANY system.
Yes, but if they become such a giant it's just as bad... It would be better to hope that they all damage each other so much that some kind of sane regulation is imposed over this broken and trollish system.
First... slashdot loading a new comment page page upon reply? O_o
Anyway, how many companies and services do you think would be affected by a shutdown? The implications of all those businesses and people might cover a huge sum.
Why would they just trust the US and provide them that leverage? Independence is well worth it and the research and experience will probably pay off for other projects as well.
And you base this on what, exactly? What you see from the media that is not interested in depicting them as a serious movement or in your own personal observation? Or you're just "reading between the lines"?
Have you ever been to a march? What would you advice these people? Do you have any claims? What are you doing about it?
Everything and everyone can be ridiculed if you're intent on doing it and that includes us both.
And the quote you have is awkwardly appropriate , what are YOU doing for your country?
Sadly, I've learned most Slashdot users will talk from self-perceived position of superiority and mock any and all attempts from people to improve things, exercise their right to free speech or just try to do whatever they can to fight for their rights.
They will gladly complain about the Evil Xs, Ys and Zs until a common person dares to do something about it and ends up being noteworthy. That's when the hate machine will come down upon him. Meanwhile, I wonder what WE do to change anything.
Our level of constructiveness seems to be approx 1 %:/
I thought it was fairly obvious that the core was about a broken democracy where corporations can lobby "people's representatives" into representing their own interests instead.
If your vote doesn't count unless you have a lot of money to back it up... And those who do can prey off those who don't...
My point was that it sounded (To me) as if you tried to attack Bott solely on the basis of being praised by Florian Mueller.
It's not that important, just a note that such an attack can be used against anyone pretty effectively and is usually by itself.
While I dislike what both Mueller and Bott write, that kind of ad hominem via opinion proxy can be used by anyone.
If you support cause A and someone who is ill perceived, even by yourself, praises you, that doesn't diminish the validity of your cause in any way.
I see this tactic used all too often by mass media to attack people associating them with evil or laughed at characters.
I'll be happy the next 24 hs just by remembering your comment.
Thanks for that.
Someone mod parent up. I discovered this earlier today and it's made me very happy.
You just have to make sure that wherever you want to use it is a textarea (eg: disable rich formatting in a mail client)
Why so long and complex?
%s/\<19\>/20/g
That transforms all isolated 19s into 20s. You could also start with a specified range instead of % (whole doc).

Fun fact is that, those arrested were charged with "Demonstrating without a permit".
I still can't believe there such thing as a protesting permit and that so many people are fine with it.

You're right, they should've patented all flying machinery and prevented companies from implementing their own flying transport.
That was your point, right?
+1 Brilliant.
Doesn't change anything. Neither malice nor stupidity are good traits for such a job.

They've won. The first thing you think regarding any change is how it relates to a possible terrorist attack.
And who "they" are might differ.
Funnily enough. Yes, yes it does.
And I'd wager that, if you ask around, you'll find a lot more people who will guess a red thing means stop and a green means go/start/good in just about ANY system.

Crap, cut your tongue right now...

I was thinking more The Clash
Know that, at least, you made someone many kilometers away, drop out a short laugh and smile. :)
Xmarks begs to differ
Although, technically, it didn't say it was dying but claimed it was dead already.
Yes, I believe it qualifies as One Epic Rant because it's well intentioned but completely honest. It's wonderful.

Yeah, they're protesting an effective plutocracy.
