The researchers examined 285 movies from P2P networks and used the quality of the file to determine whether it was some guy with a video camera or not.
Why? They could just have checked VCDQuality and saved alot of time/bandwidth.
I saw the Sharp 3D laptop on display at the 2003 IFA in Berlin. It works on the same principle, lenticular imaging, that has been used for years for 3D collectors cards and posters etc. The screen is covered with thin vertical stripes that redirect light coming off the screen, showing each eye a different image. The 3D effect is quite convincing however it has a few drawbacks. The biggest problem is you have to look at it from precice angles for the effect to work i.e. if you move your head from side to side you will see the screen go from real 3D to a blur, then inverted 3D, blur... This is especially troublesome if more than one person is trying to look at it at once. The second problem is that to show two images at once each image has only half the resolution of the entire display, making it look fuzzy compared to regular 2D displays. For some reason the demo they had running only cycled through still pictures of 3D rendered scenes, no video or UI shots which makes me suspicious that these problems are even worse in those applications. It is cool technology no doubt, but it still has some problems to work out.
This would NOT be like suing someone who calls you "asshole". Being called an asshole does not (potentially) cost you money and business reputation. Now if this persons parents tell all your business customers that you are "an asshole" you just might be able to sue them.
Ebay should not be held responsible as the carrier of the accusations. Slander laws however, as they are legally defined, should apply to cases where invalid claims are made against you, online or off.
Personally I don't like the new name at all. The whole Firebird/Thunderbird reminds me too much of a muscle cars. Come on they could have come up with something better than that.
Im sorry but did nobody notice the Monty Pythonesque foot indicating HUMOR before burninating everything? I read this story elsewhere (guess where) a few days ago and I thought it was sort of funny.
Then again stuff that matters it aint.
If this has been said before im sorry but I just had to say it so please mod kindly.
I have seen tons of Sony/Spider-Man tie-ins since the movie came out. If I was Marvel I might be worried that people will start seeing Spider-Man as a Sony "mascot" in the same way Sonic the hedgehog was all over Sega.
Since Spider-Man is arguably Marvel's hottest property, and that Spider-Man has appeared alongside the Marvel logo on and off for years they are probably getting nervous that their ace is getting played by another company and its mostly Sony seeing the profits.
Then again the powers that be at Marvel may just be nuts but who knows?
I believe that the powers that be at GW are afraid that internet business will hurt them in the long run. They worry that if the hard core buyers all start shelling out their hundreds online instead of in the retail stores, the stores will quickly fold.
Now the retail stores serve a VERY important function to the company, they introduce their product to people who may never see them otherwise.
Of the hundreds of people who browse the interesting looking shop, a few will buy a starter kit and a few of those will go on to become collectors. Without that initial introduction, not to mention giving those in select areas a place to meet and play, the entire franchise may be doomed.
They may not think that shutting down independent internet outlets will hurt them because if people really want them they can buy them directly from their store at full price. The main damage I see being done to GW is to their relationship with their customers.
I am running Win2k pro but I turned off everything (active x, java) in the internet security settings and use Mozilla with the Java plugin and never IE. Do I still need to get the patch?
Lets hope it is flexible on how the CD is burned/formatted so it will work with my existing collection of single CD Divx movies. It would be a major pain to have to re-burn them with a standalone compatible disk structure.
The author does not specify Virtual Reality GLASSES in his list of "game genres".
When I first saw #5 I thought he meant 3D games were dead and that would be a stupid statement.
"VR games" evolved in to the massive amount of real-time 3D games that are available today. Almost every games is in 3D now and he says "right now VR is a huge unfunny joke". He is wrong, people just got tired of the buzzword VR because 3D is the standard. The head mounted video systems just never got small and cheap enough for everyday use. Don't forget the "splitting headache" factor either. It turnes out that for most uses, using a monitor as a window on a world is more convenient than full immersion.
Well lets see, as a Mozilla (phoenix sounds good too) user I havent seen a popup in MONTHS. Makes me wonder what all you IE users are complaining about...
Other cant-live-without-it features include:
A 3rd mouse buttons click opens a link in a new TAB. Very handy.
The tabs have the icon from this site on it. Cool!
Download manager. Much more useful for tracking downloads than IE's....nothing.
Skins are nice. I know you can skin IE with windowblinds and the like but this is no 3rd party software to (possibly) mess up and slow down your system.
I could go on and on about the subtle improvements that made me swear off IE. Im no fan of M$ but even if Mozilla (or phoenix) was made by THEM I would prefer it over IE simply due to the many added useful features.
OK im convinced. So when are we going to see this as on option for time display on Slashdot?

All it takes is a few hyped up public lawsuits against "Joe average MP3 trader" to get people to think of downloading MP3s as a REAL CRIME that breaks laws that are actually enforced.
Right now the public mindset seems to be "everyone is doing it and nobody gets in trouble for this stuff". A a couple public lynchings of P2P users and a lot of casual traders will think twice about sharing their collections.
Why do I have the feeling that we will all be listening to a lot more forgein music as scared americans zap those shared folders?
Save your money. Get the new version of FOTR with an extra 1/2 hour and REAL extras not just the ones that ran on TV already. From what I understand they are releasing this DVD version early BECAUSE of the leaked DVD screening version. Ill be swapping 4x everytime I watch it until this fall...
Of course the music industry will probably blame this on the fact that nearly all DVDs are released with copy protection while copy protected CDs have faced stiff opposition and limited releases.
I can see this descrepency in sales being used as a powerful argument for more copy protection on CDs.
Of course overpriced CDs and crappy music arent helping their sales right now either...

AaaaaaaAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAA...
That always creeped me out.
I can't belive this guy spent money registering "deadharddrive.com" for one page on how he got his saved games back.
I would have thought that name would have been snapped up by a data recovery service years ago!
BTW "Mord" is murder in german.
C'mon, is this really worth the risk of enabling macros in Mord? Do you really want to give people a reason to turn them on?
Then again I guess if you are nerd enough to want to type in Tengwar you may know a thing or two about the dangers of word...
For anyone too lazy to type in the link:

I was too lazy to type the link. Why is it not linked in the first place? Who knows...
