I'm not sure if you're stating that Apple only pushes Firewire, but if so, you're wrong. If not for Apple's making USB the ONLY way to connect anything to an iMac, USB would still be gathering dust on the back of all your computers. The iMac's enormous popularity created a huge market for USB periphs. I'm sure Apple will think twice before lining Intel's pockets again.
Too bad this hadn't been posted when I started writing my post (cid #9). Could have saved me a lot of typing.
Suggestion -- if you number the items on the list, it's easier for the "me too!" people. Like, I could say "3, 4, 7, 9, 10!!!" to indicate my support for those items in your list.
Maybe this is the next generation of Slashdot posting... when the answers are so predictable, just number them, then we can all just post/vote for our favorites.
Oh boy, USB 2.0 will be 480 Mbps. It will be forward and backward compatible -- wowee.
Their treatment of USB 2.0 was severely lacking. I wish Apple would drop its firewire tax (if not completely, then at least a few notches) so we could use a technology that was designed for things like this. This is the second time I've linked to this article today, but it's worth a read.
It's easier to just link to these articles than just rehash the same old arguments every time USB 2.0 is mentioned. Suffice it to say it'll be more than a day late and a dollar short, but, sadly, it will probably catch on due to Intel's stranglehold on the chip market. Once again, if Apple would ease up on the 1394 tax, we would all be better off (and Apple would have at least one victory against Wintel under its belt). Alas, they will not do that, so tomorrow's iMacs will probably ship with USB 2, 3, and 4, and FireWire 2, 3, and 4 will be quietly brushed under the rug.
Were the ones without all the swearing. "Uncle Fucka" was absolutely hilarious the first time I heard it, but of course, they would never pick anything they couldn't play on the radio.
On another note, what is the relationship between the MPAA and the AMPAS? Maybe we should boycott this if they're cohorts? Then again, our wimpy boycott really wouldn't make much difference, and I already "boycott" (ie, don't watch) any of the stupid awards shows (ESPECIALLY THE GRAMMYS) because they are *so* stupid. Why would I care what they think? And how can anyone take an award seriously when the categories are like "best female pop song recorded on the third wednesday of january," or any of the other inane categories? Like the (MTV|People's Choice|American|VH1|Grammy|etc|etc|etc) music awards a couple of years ago, where I think Will Smith won best rock song and best rap song FOR THE SAME SONG. Or more recently, Kid Rock and Limp Bizkit and/or Korn were nominated in the "alternative" category. Sticking with the misnomer "alternative" for bands like Pearl Jam, Nirvana, AIC, etc; how can these bands be considered alternative?
Ok, so this became OT, but the point is that these awards shows are decided by old men who have no idea what is going on. At least the movie they pick for "best film" is usally good, which is more than can be said for any of the myriad songs picked as "best (male|female) (group|singer) (alternative|rock|pop|rap|r&b|hiphop|*.*) song."
I believe it was Martin Luther King who said, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere," and so I believe we ALL have the right to call this phone number, not just Virginians.
On another note, how could they not have passed this bill? I mean, AOL is based there and I'm sure has its lackeys pushing it like crazy. And after all, Virginia is the dot-com capital of America! Apparently that means they cater to dot-com corporations and care little, if at all, for the rights of their own constituents.
Ahh, the beautiful stench of politics as usual. Don't we elect these people to DEFEND OUR RIGHTS??? Ugh, don't get me started, I will get into my gun-control mania again.
I noticed there is nothing regarding UCITA's passing on CNN.com (as of 9:30 am). I wonder if that's an order from Case himself... ___________________
hm, well, according to this, we have cable modem now (little neck), so I guess I was wrong about near my house, but look down by hillside and springfield gardens -- spring of next year. So the point is still somewhat valid... lots of people don't have it yet. Even parts of Manhattan still don't have it. ___________________
My home's in Queens, about 10 miles from Manhattan -- and there is no broadband there! Supposedly Time Warner will have cable modem eventually, and BA is promising DSL, but this is already several months old. I just tried searching again, here's what it said (and has said for at least the past six months)
We're sorry. Infospeed DSL is not available in your area at this time. The good news is that it should be available in your area in the next six months. If you'd like us to contact you when your number qualifies for Infospeed DSL, click here to be placed on our notification list. We will only contact you if Infospeed DSL becomes available to you.
Note: In some cases, Infospeed DSL may become available in an area, but not be available to your home due to technical limitations. The technology is improving rapidly, so if you are affected by this situation, we will keep your name on our list and notify you if Infospeed DSL becomes available to you.
This is not some boondocky place, this is within the New York City limits!!! Now I don't know if wireless is the solution to this problem, but the assumption that everybody has access to DSL or Cable is wrong. ___________________
The current MacOS is 9.0. Darwin is going to be part of MacOS X (ten). If he had said "Mac OS X" he still wouldn't be right because there is nothing other than rumors to suggest Apple is porting MacOS X to any other platforms. Supposedly these rumors have been substantiated somehow, but I'll believe it (Mac OS on anything other than Motorola/PPC) when I see it. ___________________
If I use NS 4.7 for Mac and visit a page with a style sheet link in the and then change the style sheet -- add a special attribute for all TD, for example -- Netscape does not reload the style sheet when the page is reloaded. I don't think this really affects the average joe, but when you're testing to see how different attributes look on a page it's very annoying. IE 4.5 DOES reload the style sheet when you click reload. ___________________
You missed it, there was some kind of a bug in the slash code and people were posting images. Some girl was sucking a cock... it was a gif, I said he made a strong case for "Burn all gifs". Then all the pictures were removed, the bug fixed, and my post was left dangling, looking very stupid. ___________________
Here is what I wrote in reply to this article. I agree with you 100%. I also attended CTY, the summer after 7th grade. Boy, was that a shocker. I got a 950 on my SATs in 7th grade, thought I was a genius, etc., but I went to CTY and was the dumbest... the DUMBEST one there. College was another wakeup call, because, like you said, I didn't know how to study (there were also various other reasons, but that was a biggie).
I personally think the SAT should be eliminated because it measures nothing useful. And believe me, it is NOT a predictor of success. If it were, I would have a 3.98 gpa, and, well, it's a lot lower than that. ___________________
Here's a Salon.com Article that mentions the same point I raised, about Rob saying he didn't want to be bought by a Linux company. I think it says he specifically turned down an offer from VA. But I read it a few hours ago... ___________________
I think all the img src= blah blah blah posts got moderated down to -5 by some magical force. set the threshold to -9999 in the url. ___________________
Linux.com used to say "Powered by Debian" at the top, and I believe Debian is Rob's favorite distro. Of course, Linux.com had to be powered by something, and ya can't hold somebody's personal preference against them really, so I guess this isn't a conflict of interest...
Of course, if they really wanted to be "neutral" they could have put Linux.com on NT... lol. ___________________
I thought the reason you guys (Rob & Jeff) decided to be bought (or whatever the technical term is) by Andover was because it wasn't a Linux company, so it wouldn't seem like you would be losing any partiality. I realize you guys and VA have been buddies for a long time (IIRC, most of Slashdot runs on VA Hardware, bought through the barter system [they get free ads, you get free hardware]... right?), plus, Rob's (one of) the webmaster(s) (or some dang thing) for Linux.com, which they own. So VA and Andover were probably already pretty chummy... but what prompted this? I.e., why?
I don't know what you all are allowed to say, what with SEC restrictions and all that kinda stuff, but (how) will this affect Slashdot? Will we get even more editors (like the advent of Roblimo when Andover took over)?
I'm just guessing, but I assume Mr. Malda is pretty high on the Andover totem pole. What's going to be his new position at VA Linux, or is he going to remain at his current position inside Andover?
I think the Andover aquisition was a Good Thing, and VA seems like a nice company, so I guess this will also be a Good Thing. Then again, you know how the Open Source Community(tm) feels about monopolies...
Any info from higher-ups would be appreciated... and if you can't say anything, then say that you can't say anything! Otherwise I will have hurt feelings... ___________________
I was so proud of my SAT score when I received it. But I got to college and found that my awesome SAT scores meant absolutely nothing. I almost failed out during my freshman year in college. I don't understand why colleges still require these antiquated, useless scores. When I went to an info session at West Point, they said that SAT scores are the only common denominator among people across the country so that was what they used. SATs I guess are meant as a way to judge a student against the rest of the nation, since High Schools differ so greatly in quality, but what good is measuring a student against the rest of the nation if the measuring tool itself is broken? Really, I know people who got in the 1100s who are doing much better than I am.
SATs are simply another way for the College board to rip high schoolers off. That and the $75-per-exam AP tests -- which most colleges don't even care about anyway.
My first reaction to this Lego thing was scorn, but after thinking about it, almost anything would be better than the SATs. Then again, why doesn't the college just prepare its own comprehensive entrance exam? How do you rate a Lego creation?
With this Lego test, I probably would have gotten into college when I was 12! ___________________

But with your example about not being able to prove that I ordered a specific item, that I could say it was a bug in their software, why couldn't I just do the same thing with a digital signature? They say "Sign for this disk drive," then they have the signature on file, couldn't I just still say it was an error? That their record with my acceptance had been corrupted somehow? How tough are PGP signatures to crack?
