I appreciate open source software and all that it gives us. However, to wish for BeOS to be open source is to wish for the death of BeOS. The only way BeOS is going to become opensourced is if Be, Inc. goes under.
This may not apply to you, but it does apply to many people I have had discussions with who are open source advocates. It upsets me to think that juvenile people would wish for the downfall of a company, just to get a look at the code. If you want to see the code, get a job with Be, Inc. Oh, wait. You actually have to be a talented programmer for that.
It seems that many open source advocates call for the open sourcing of BeOS for selfish reasons, like wanting to rip all the cool features out of BeOS and integrate them into Linux, or something just as ridiculous. Let me let you in on a little secret. It would be easier to figure out how to create those features from scratch specifically for Linux, than it would be to try and hack the code from BeOS into Linux. Having those features kludged into Linux doesn't help Linux, and definately doesn't help BeOS, or Be, Inc.
Open source is a death sentence to BeOS. Would you actually use and develop for it if it were open source? Why only then and not now?

Isn't Apache 2.0 threaded? The reason they couldn't get a successful port of 1.x was because of the forks, IIRC, but with 2.0, the BeOS port is possible.
There are a couple of multithreaded web servers for BeOS out there. One of them is Robin Hood. The other is Poorman (which ships with BeOS). There is at least one more, but I can't remember the name. Until BeOS gets better security and networking, it's a moot point anyway. Just wait until R5 tho... I bet for a mid-range server, BeOS will trounce NT for ease of use, scalability, and cost. I won't make claims against Linux, cause that's not smart...

HAHAHAHAHA! You really expect me to believe that only SERVERS need protected memory, true multitasking, SMP support, etc.? Obviously you've never edited video on a Mac in Media 100, done any audio production work in Pro-Tools, any 3D in Infini-D, or any 2D animation in After Effects, or been pissed when another app takes down your system while you're working on a huge file in Photoshop, and you forgot to save your work before you jumped over to the other app... I have done all of the above and suffered greatly when MacOS went down. When you have to redo 20 minutes to an hour of work, that's 20 minutes to an hour that you CAN'T charge to a client. It's especially embarrasing when the client is in the room with you...
At least with BeOS, WinNT, or Linux (which I wouldn't use as a workstation, but anyway) I don't have to worry about one app crashing the entire system. Especially with BeOS.
I also don't see why you wouldn't want to be able to do more than one thing at a time. I'm constantly checking e-mail while I'm surfing while I'm listening to MP3s while I'm working on graphics while I'm... well, you get the picture. Sure, grandma (read users that the iMac is targeted to) may not NEED multitasking, protected memory, etc., but grandma isn't the only one using MacOS. There are serious designers using it, and they have to deal with these problems on a daily basis.
And I can find my way around on just about ANY computer. They all have a consistency of design if you are using a GUI. They all use the same concepts throughout the navigation of the filesystem. (files, folders, menus, etc.) The window dressing doesn't matter.

I think (i could be wrong.. it happens) this thing has USB. What's so hard about hooking up an external drive to this and installing apps, Linux, or whatever else on this thing?
It's not really geared to the tech-heads, or to people looking for a "computer". It's an "internet appliance" and should be looked at as such. If you want a cheap machine that you can configure to your heart's content, there are other alternatives. This thing is geared to the moms and dads and grandparents who just want something to get e-mail with, maybe something to write a letter on (if it has USB, you can hook up a printer to it) check out websites. Basically those same (type of) people who bought WebTVs, but would like the ability to actually run some other software as well. With regard to third party development opportunities, he said they will exist. He did warn me that "this is not BeOS as you know it. It is a very specialized version." Hmm.

BeOS has not been considered beta for quite some time now.. hence the names R3, R4, R4.5, etc. Those are VERSION numbers. Like Photoshop 3, Photoshop 4, Photoshop 5...
Binary compatibility wasn't broken between any point releases in BeOS, it was broken between two FULL VERSION releases (R3 to R4), not.x releases, and only on the Intel platform. There was a perfectly good reason for this too. ELF is better than PE or whatever they were using before. Why was binary compatibility broken between versions of Linux again?
Just because there is a bit of hardware limitation doesn't mean that BeOS is a beta product. It just means it's only in it's 2nd release on the Intel Platform. Hell, they're doing better than Linux in it's first 2 years...
The fact is, you know NOTHING about what you are so vocal about.. Why don't you just crawl back into your opensource hole and shut your eyes and cover your ears and hope that somebody can make Linux user friendly, faster, prettier, and cleaner than BeOS. Yeah, right.
