maybe it's too hard for OEM's to preinstall RedHat or Debian (insert your fav here), but once they are allowed to 'modify' the default windows desktop (after the court case) then I wonder how many OEM's could be convinced to preinstall cygwin or debian? The results would be a generation of kids growing up on gcc, bash, etc. That would be cool.
wtf is up with the moderation?/me remembers a fine old day when slashdot articles weren't taken so seriously and this kind of stuff was good for a quick chuckle. And as for being marked off-topic, I think that these conversations would get quite stale without any tangents at all. my 2 cents. I'm relurking.
An intelligent robot device which will collect jam from a family unit's respective toes at a user specified time. Time may be indictated by 24 hour clock over weekly, monthly, yearly schedules. Device will sterilize 'toe-jam', jar and then place in the household's refridgerator. For larger families, the robot device can be programmed to make deliveries to a local grocery store.
Also configurable via the XML language to collect samples from male household members for the local sperm bank, nightly or hourly (user defined). Robot device will automatcally collect monetary returns and deposit in a user specfied bank account (via teller or bank machine).
was the biggest waste of cash. No CLI, and it was software that tried to be smarter than me... ugly mess. Virus scanning software would rock but not ArcServe! I'll be excited when Legato Networker server runs on FreeBSD.
I think the next slashdot poll should be 'your fav backup software'
How many book publishers get royalties on every photocopy ever made? I can't believe that I'm getting taxed by these dork's for my zip disk and I can't believe that these people think that piracy is a huge loss of revenue!!! Most of their revenue comes from holiday's... how many CD-R's did you give this year as presents?
when was the last time you tried an OCTANE with 4M of tram and two R12000 CPU's ? I've yet to meet a pc that can do floating point like that or real time 3D. There is more to life than playing quake...it will be some time before I can recommend linux as a production animation workstation. SGI caters not to the gaming market last I checked.
so this is what 'lay' people think of linux eh?

The licenses that are coming out are innovative they let people share ideas and contribute to existing technologies. I'm glad that there are people like Bruce taking care of getting these licenses properly reviewed by peers so that when I get around to releasing my own killer app or start contributing to a project myself,I know that my cvscommit will stand on solid legal ground!
Please see http://www.sidefx.com Houdini is IMNSHO a much more powerful package than maya and now runs under linux... Big news for us in the television/film 3D world
Nice round number to throw it at '75' games. It looked like he was faking it.
The previous download was time limited which for me was annoying because I need more than 45 days to play with and learn the tool.
It's likely that I can't afford a personal copy of VAST but it will be really fun to have to play with and compare with other Smalltalk env's.
/me wanders off to calculate hours lost to browsing /.
from source? as opposed to coming magically into being via the machine code fairies?
uh. you've got alot of spare time on your hands if you can audit the code for everything you use.

gvim is part of vim
once the language is affirmed, dialog can take place.
Hey Bruce,
Can you make them understand that HP-OpenView is not *open*? They are very disillusioned about that product of theirs.
Well then read on to witness the customer demands :)
