    I have a bunch of apps on my iPhone and iPad but I don't download many new apps anymore. I've got the toolset that I like. I keep an eye out for new apps but I just don't find anything new coming out that offers any new features that's better than what I have. There are new email clients and calendars but they don't offer much new. If someone brought out some innovative feature then people would replace their applications. At least I would.

    Fossil fuel companies have their impacts on the environment picked up by society.

    Sports franchises usually get their arenas/stadiums partially or fully paid for by governments.

    The military industrial complex wouldn't exist without the government.

    I agree with you that they have no right to a profit and shouldn't be wasting tax dollars with this garbage but they aren't the only industry that lives off government welfare.

    The main point was that you never backed up your phone. It doesn't matter that an update caused you to lose the data. You could have lost the phone, dropped the phone into water or had some other accident and lost the data that way.

    Yes, but how often do you hear of a case of them using the DMCA to go after the wrong thing and it's for a great work. It's usually for some Michael Bay movie or Bieber song.

    Now if the punishment was that they couldn't inflict the item of media onto the public for six months or a year for every false accusation then I would definitely get on board for that. No radio, no streaming, no sales for the period of time.

    It's stupid that they put the repeater in the room in the first place. It could have easily been placed in the hallway and it would have worked just as well without disturbing patients. Besides if something does go wrong with the repeater do you really want to have your tech person come into the room to swap it out. (I would hope that they would just swap it out as that would be the least intrusive action for the patient instead of hanging around trying to trouble shoot the problem for a half hour.)

    I came here to basically say the same thing. It counts how often something is said and posts the most "popular" items. If it happens to be a conspiracy theory about 9/11 or a politician sharing penis pictures or flat worlders thinking trees used to go into space or some world news event then that's what people are talking about. (Three of those things make me shudder, can you guess which ones?) You can modify things to check to see if people aren't gaming the system (a small group of people posting the identical thing to boost the rating, etc) but if that's what people are discussing then that's your trending topic.

  15. And a lot of those areas are farms. Take a look at the prairies in Canada and the US and most of it has been converted to farmland. Sure there's the Boreal Forest in northern Canada and Alaska and the area above but it's not as large as it looks on maps (I forget the name of the effect).

    Unions only care about maximizing their revenue. They no longer care about the people they represent.

    When I was in the government the CIO of my department didn't want my term contract extended because it would take me past the point where I would automatically become a permanent employee. My manager (and his boss) fought to keep me. Under the agreement they were not allowed to let me go if the position was still required just because keeping me would cause me to become permanent. I contacted the union and their reply was that the CIO could do whatever they wanted. I ended up staying but that was because my managers fought on my behalf. The union didn't give a damn. I have no idea why I was paying them $600 a year other than I had to.

    For years, decades even, people have been saying that you can't run an economy on renewable* sources of electricity but Costa Rica is showing that it can be done. Some countries in Europe have a high percentage of the electrical generation from renewable sources at times but nothing close to 100% for 76 days.

    Sure they are using fossil fuels for transportation and other uses but they are way ahead of other countries. When Canada, the US, Australia, or even some other country like New Zealand powers their electrical grid from 100% renewable sources then feel free to criticize Costa Rica on their lack of progress on using gasoline.

    * - Where renewable is used instead of saying sources of electricity that do not produce CO2 or other greenhouse gases directly.

    Geothermal stations don't have an impact on fish or other wildlife, except maybe during any drilling.

    TV is a luxury and not a requirement. Plus there are ways to view some channels without cable or satellite.

    Well the CRTC did open up the NOCs for the incumbents (Bell, Rogers, Telus, etc) so that the other ISPs use their wires for the last mile so we have a choice of ISP here. I haven't been with a telco or a cable company in over 15 years. I wouldn't say the prices are great compared to Europe but I'm paying less for my Internet access over cable than if I went directly to the cable company.

    I hope that the CRTC expands their ruling to fibre.

    I'm guessing that they probably couldn't see the label or if they could it wasn't near the coiled loop of red wire anymore.

    It's not meant to leave the ground. It's meant to give thrust to items already in space. Like ion drives or solar sails.
