  1. What happens if on Red Hat In The Black for Q3 · · Score: 1

IBM quits giving money to them? Or any other large company that hands cash to them because they want the tax writeoff? I'd bet there wouldn't be a profit, but rather a huge deficit. Good God, everyone knows you can't give something away and expect to make a profit. Be honest, how many boxes of RH REALLY have been sold? Not enough to cover Alan Cox's salary (I'm quite sure it is massive). Why? Because the software is given away and also sold for $5 a disc. Can't make profit like that. Now Microsoft knows how to make money, RH should look at their model to see how a successful company is run. Be honest, you know it's true.

Why this "news" was plastered onto the front page of the stomach turning site is beyond me. Most folks here have no freakin' clue what they're talking about when it comes to American politics because they're not even US citizens, so why bother posting something like this? This just goes right along with the trend to make everyone a victim of something. Personal responsibility is a phrase that is not heard much due to the media and liberal desire to victimize everyone so that they can suck up all the government handouts they create.

And poor Jessica the art therapist and harp player...she has too much to pay back. I'd bet Jessica has the intellect of a block wall. She'll be first in line for the handouts. Personally, I think college is WAY overrated for the average person. Almost every person in my high school class who went to college is doing something other than what they went to college for. Perhaps they should have thought about it before throwing 40 grand out the car window.

The game guy in the most recent issue of Maximum PC has stated what everyone else in the industry was afraid to say: PC games are a dying breed. Why? Because consoles are much more advanced and more capable than they were even 5 years ago. The Xbox, PS2, and Gamecube all cost less than a damn video card!

If you're a game developer, would you rather create a game that sells 150,000 on the PC, or create a game that sells 2,000,000 on a console? Hmmm...lets get the calculator out. The number of quality console games keeps getting larger, and quality PC games dwindle. Why else do you think every console has an impressive list of games coming soon?

  9. Sun is going for a tax writeoff on Sun To Sell Linux PCs · · Score: 1

It's plainly obvious why Sun is trying to throw the odious Star Office to every "student" in the world AND sell Linux machines - they need a big write-off this year. Everyone know that MS Office is THE standard in the business world. Walk into an office and tell them you don't know MS Word or Excel, but you do know Star Office, and you'll be laughed out of the building. Star Office is yet another "me too" product that will never catch on. As for selling Linux boxes, Linux don't sell very well because Linux users don't like to pay for anything. Sun should know that, but they want the tax break.

Good point - "Pay up or shut up, money makes things happen and Linux'ers tend to be pretty cheap". However, I don't see any copy of WinXP priced at $300. Home Ed. costs $95, Pro is $199. Plus, the hardware activation issue is so dead at this point, I can't believe people still get all worked up about it. Another thing I have a hard time swallowing is the statement about buying new hardware constantly and running Linux. New hardware + Linux = a non-functioning computer most of the time. With Windows there isn't an issue, just install the driver. Any OS that forces you to spend hours upon hours scrounging the Internet for working drivers and parts of the OS that are missing isn't worth the paper I use to wipe my ass. I have much better things to do than to sit and screw with a machine to make something work.

When asked about the timetable for 1.0 release, they stated "We are definately making progress. Look for it soon! Internet Explorer XXXV will go down in flames!!!".

Mozilla is the open source "clone" of Netscape. Netscape, if you remember, was a pioneer in the early days of WWW browsing. After being bought by AOL-Time Warner, some hoped that the huge cash flow would help the floundering former giant. AOL declared bankruptcy in 2010, bringing down all companies underneath it, including Netscape.

All in all, Mozilla really does look like a promising piece of software if the Mozilla team could actually release version 1.0. Just wishful thinking on my part...
