This hits a little too close to home for me to be happy about. Before I bought my Mac, I couldn't have imagined spending money on a file manager. But the Finder was just too bad and PathFinder just too good. So there ya go.

That's not entirely true. My school, at number 31, only recommends Cisco. They sell "University" laptops (at a "discount") with Centrino, but stick a Cisco card in them anyway. In fact, if you read the "official" documentation, you'd think that any non-Cisco cards wouldn't work at all.

Why couldn't the dialog box have an area at the bottom for status messages? For example, when a required field isn't filled in, the label for that field could be red. When it is filled in, change it to black (or whatever your standard text color is). The status area could have a message "Not all required fields have been filled in" until they are, in fact, filled in. If you try to put an incorrect SSN in, the status area could flash (drawing your attention) and display the message "there may be no spaces in the SSN". You could just cast your eyes down, read the message, and look back up to correct the problem. To me, this seems a lot better than having error messages pop up forcing me to stop what I'm doing and tend to it.

My own ideas for UI design involve the UI just getting out of the way.

I do purchase CDs (mostly less-than-mainstream bands who aren't crap) but I can echo your sentiments exactly. There's a store here (Big Lots, basically they sell somewhat crappy merchandise at great prices) that I go into whenever I'm getting my oil changed to pass the time. Everytime I do, I walk out with a stack of CDs, all costing about $3. Sure, maybe I don't *want* this orchestral arrangement of the Eagles' greatest hits...but you just never know when it might come in handy! Especially at those prices!

To the best of my knowledge, I've never seen a peck or a bushal and being well past that part of my education, I can't even remember the conversion factors. I've never seen a deciliter either, but I know that it's exactly a tenth of a liter. The point would be to get rid of all those units that don't make sense and switch to something that can be learned in a couple afternoons of prefix memorization.

For the record, I don't even think I can spell bushal. Another personal pet peeve to America's measurement standards.
