In all honesty, they'll probably ignore this UDP since the summary cancellations will mean they will no longer have to forward so many complaints about Usenet spamming to/dev/null.
They will recieve twice as many complaints from customers demanding that they do something to have the UDP overturned.
If they ignore that, the complaints will gradually tail off as people switch to xDSL.
I'm taking a wait and see attitude for now. Let's see what they do if anything. I would expect some sort of a response from someone in the next few days.
Is the counter on the player limited to 100? Because you can certainly fit more than 100 mp3's on a CD-r. At a meg a minute, say 600 megs would be 100 6 minute songs. Most songs are 3 to 4 minutes. You can get more than 150 typical songs on a CD-r. I suspect the unit has a 2 digit counter to select the track.
Other than that, this is what I've been waiting for, now I just need a CD-r drive. The radio is a great bonus too.
Hopefully when we have all these major, popular, easy to install distros ( Corel, Mandrake, Redhat ) it will encourage compatibility between all distros and prevent any one company from having too much control over "Linux".
I'm looking forward to the Corel distribution myself. Hopefully, the beta version of their distro will be easily available and not restricted to a few beta testers. It'll be time for me to finally take another run at linux and try installing it on my P2-400 128Mb. I like the looks of KDE too.
It gets more interesting by the day.
The final victory will come when Microsoft starts to release software for Linux, that will be their white flag surrender.
When was the last time you played a 3D-PC game in 640x480? That's basically the limit of a console as it uses a TV for it's display. I won't play a game in less than 800x600 and with my next video card, I'll be playing in 1024x768 and above. Can't do that on a console.
Can't download demos or join a multiplayer server on a console. Can't download mods, new cars, new tracks, new whatever to modify your game. Look at quake, you can download CTF, Rocket Arena, Jailbreak, etc, etc, etc, literally dozens of mods, can't do that on a console. I'll never buy a console again.
Stability and hardware compatibility can be frustrating on a PC but that one downside doesn't offset all the downsides of a console.
Even if people do start leaving Linux for other things, hopefully the Legacy of Linux and the internet is that it won't matter what OS you're running. There will be an adherance to standards. Instead of the old microsoft way, remember "DOS isn't done 'till Lotus won't run"?
Hopefully, in future, it won't matter what you're running, you can still do everything you need. A linux user today can meet with a windows user and a mac user on a quake server and play a game of quake.
On other fronts, we're not quite there yet. I'm frustrated at all the job ads that say "Send your MS Word '97 formatted resume to...". A lot of people are still very, very devoted to Microsoft.
Where is ICQ in all of this? That's what *most* people use isn't it?
And also, a fine example of why closed source software sucks. AOL changes their code to *break* the microsoft messenger which really just amounts to regular people aren't able to do what they were doing before.
Tired of these wars being played out on *my* desktop.
It'd be cool of these people would work *fixing* bugs instead of trying to create bugs that break other software.
When I got my first modem ( 300bps ) in about 1985 I downloaded a program that would play the first few bars of Van Halen's You Really Got Me on my Atari 600XL.
It wasn't portable but I don't see how you can patent something like this. Who has the patent on using ink on paper to represent the spoken word?
What gets me are the people who are finished but they stand there and put the card into the wallet, count the money, put the money into the wallet, look at the receipt, put it into the wallet, zip up the wallet, unzip the purse, find a nice place for the wallet in the purse, make sure it's not going to fall out. Zip up the purse, make sure it's zipped, tug on the strap to make sure it's not going to come undone.
I'm sorry but Star Wars is a B movie full of cheesie one liners. I don't get the appeal. I went to the theatre when it was re-released and I remembered seeing it as a kid but I never remembered it being that lame.
I may go to see episode 1 but only on a tuesday afternoon after it's been out for 3 or 4 weeks. And even then only because it will be years before it makes it on to superchannel.
I'm just generally tired of this whole pop culture mass media over the top money machine.
Most kids these days carry around their CD-cassette-whatever walkman and their cell phone. It would make more sense to have the phone book built into the cell phone but oh well.
But, they don't have watches so they still need to stop you and ask for the time.
This isn't the game or even the demo. This is a beta test only. They are only fishing for bugs with this release.
The demo and the final game release will obviously come out on all 3 simultaneously.
The only reason they're releasing to mac, linux, and win in that order is that they want to start with a smaller number of users to control the volume of bug reports.
Known Issues: Opening multiple browser windows causes unpredictable results. Any URL entered into a new browser window affects only the first window. Closing multiple windows in the wrong order can cause a crash.
It's just an effect used by the creaters of the cartoon to draw attention to something on the screen. That's all. It can have dramatic effect as well. And yes, if I look at my phone sitting on the edge of the desk 2 feet away, the chair behind it at 4 feet away is out of focus. Not only that but we don't get depth perception on TV so the effect can add an illusion of depth.
I would encourage anyone to be creative and use all the visual effects they have access to.
This is a show that encourages to really watch closely. A lot of quick little gags that whiz by that are easy to miss.
And the animation is beatiful too. Very smooth with a much better 3d feel to it. Objects coming into and going out of focus with distance from the camera. Things moving and changing size according to their proper perspective. Excellent show.
I was lucky to catch it. I had the TV on that channel when it happened to start. I didn't even know it was on. I'll be looking for it every week now though.
I had always just assumed that you'd buy Quake3Arena and it would contain the windows, mac, and linux versions. I never thought there'd be a seperate Q3A for Linux box.
I don't know. Does anyone know this for sure? And you'll be able to download the executables from the net, it's the data files that you have to get from the CD.
Kind of expensive, i'll still be dual-booting

VMWare Beta Release
·
· Score: 1
I just pulled this from their FAQ at:
Very cool product but I can't see paying $300 for it. To run windows? Windows doesn't cost that much.
http://www2.vmware.com/products/productfaq.html
When will VMware become available? The initial VMware product comes in two flavors, based on the operating system running native on the PC. These two versions are VMware for Linux and VMware for Windows NT. A beta release of VMware for Linux will be available on or about March 15, 1999. Commercial release of VMware for Linux is planned for May, approximately 60 days later. The beta release of VMware for Windows NT is scheduled for mid-April, with commercial release expected in June (approximately 60 days later).
What is the price? Each flavor of the product has a list price of $299.00 U.S.
They will recieve twice as many complaints from customers demanding that they do something to have the UDP overturned.
If they ignore that, the complaints will gradually tail off as people switch to xDSL.

How long will it take before we see something like this but where you are not allowed to touch or have anything to do with a computer for a year?
Get them running d.net. I imagine that there are a few idle clock cycles in that list.

I would be a lot less hesitant to copy a CD and give it away if they are going to assume I'm doing this and charge me for it.
If I'm paying a copyright violation fee, tax, whatever, I may as well do it if I'm paying for it.
It sure makes it harder to feel bad about it anyway.

I'll take that money and buy a G400 MAX.

YOU'RE DONE NOW GET OUT OF THE WAY!
Can these mice run around like Thing from the Adams Family?
Now that would be cool.
I want a couple of extra fingers on the side of my head so I can hold the phone.
Or, if there was a sequel they could say:
"From the people that gave you Head."
I get the feeling that jarjar has spent a great deal of time in Jamaica.

Even Sly Stallone only puked out 5 Rockies.
I imagine it has a pointing device built in but I've never seen a keyboard pointing device with a satisfactory button placement.
And I agree. Sometimes when you're eating or holding a book open or whatever you need the whole keyboard accessible with one hand.
I already have the complete solution, old fashioned keyboard, old fashioned ball mouse.

LOL! No thanks!
So far we have yet to see any legit news today.
I would think that one April Fools day joke would be plenty.

I usually don't use the same nick for long on IRC and some of my more ambiguous nicks have prompted a lot of DCC chats from guys.
I think the technology is starting to advance beyond the intellect of the people using it.
I saw that too.
