    Finding a page with Search Engine in it will not bring up google's page. DUH. Where on the google page are those words? No where. And a search result is not a recommendation.

    You are missing the point. A search for "Search Engine" should return google.com. Anyone can put the words "search engine" on their website, but that doesn't make them relevant.

    Unless you are selling a service to the public...

    If you block a certain address range, it wouldn't take a particularly brilliant lawyer to show cause for a discrimination suit. Since there are more demographic distinctions than ISPs, it is guaranteed that some minority will be overrepresented among the blocked, even if it is purely anomalous.

    Being British is about driving in a German car to an Irish pub for a Belgian beer, and then travelling home, grabbing an Indian curry or a Turkish kebab on the way, to sit on Swedish furniture & watch American shows on a Japanese TV. And the most British thing of all? Suspicion of anything foreign.

    And for the record - good economy does not equal "good culture". Just because someone pays for your shit, doesn't stop it from being shit.

    Perhaps America will stop producing shit when the rest of the world stops gobbling it up and asking for more. For now, that seems to be your preference. If you don't approve of a major export product of the world's largest economy, maybe you should have words with your countrymen first.

    The very fact that they see nothing fundamentally wrong with using these sites to download music and movies demonstrates that they are in agreement with those movements, and do not believe that access to information ought to be regulated by copyright.

    You are making an unfounded leap there. Just because millions of people do something doesn't mean they don't realize it's wrong. Millions of people drive drunk. Millions of people don't pay income taxes. They know such behavior is harmful to society, but usually they get away with it, so they do it anyway.

    It's not about being "in agreement with some movement", it's all about getting shit for free and not getting caught. The downloaders know perfectly well that they would not have one-tenth of the current selection if everybody infringed...they just want to rip some free stuff and let someone else pick up the tab.

    You still haven't answered my question. Why does the rest of the world spend such massive amounts of money importing the byproducts of American culture if, as you claim, America has no culture?

    P.S. That's the explanation why USA has such high crime rate. That's explains why you Americans at large has no understanding what's going outside: since you have no culture (but show business) one can hardly expect you to understand way others are living.

    There's one thing missing from your little rant:

    Why does the rest of the world spend so much of their euros/yen/RMB/won/pesos/etc on American culture if it doesn't exist?

    You need to stop reading back issues of PRAVDA for your news.

    They say "$x billion worth" - I'd assume Windows servers are a little more expensive than *nix servers due to more licensing. The article doesn't touch on the actual number of servers sold. I've not had experience buying enterprise servers though...

    In the business world, the numbers don't matter, but the dollars do. The most salient point is that the industry, for whatever reasons, is willing to spend more on Windows servers than *nix boxes.

    What would you rather have: your favorite OS dishing up the most webpages today, or your favorite OS earning the most money (i.e. fuel for tomorrow's R&D). Which one really matters in the long run?

    I'm torn between whether this is kind of cool or the stupidest thing ever. The image of a family gathered around the cofee table playing games is located in the part of my brain where I keep things like the Brady Bunch (Marcia, Marcia, Marcia), so I just don't see that taking off

    I'm not sure what rock you have been living under, but family boardgames are huge in Europe, and that popularity is resurging in the US and Asia. Recent games like Settlers of Catan and Cranium have both sold over 10 million copies...compare that to a AAA list videogame or a movie grossing $100M at the box office at $10/ticket. Do you know how hard it is for an album to sell 10 million copies?

    I got the idea after visiting a friends house and seeing a strange ornament displayed in their window. It was a glass dome and inside were 4 paddles mounted cross wise (horizontally) on a vertical support. One side of each paddle was black and the other white (or silver, its hard to remember now).

    Canada had a dispute with Denmark just last year that everyone's forgotten about now. Lousy Danes want our northern islands...

    Nobody actually wants those islands...they want the 200 mile radius of fishing rights around those islands. I'm sure Denmark would love to let you keep the land in exchange for the fish.

    there's plenty of robotic/automated (albiet expensive) solutions

    Keep in mind the hidden cost of not investing in automated ripping hardware: you need to invest in a more robust storage system or pay the ripping fee again when drives fail.

    However, if you spend a few hundred dollars on a 200 disc changer, like a Starmatix Powerfile, you don't really need to bother with a RAID. This factor needs to be considered when pricing the whole deal.

    MCE puts mpeg2 content in a container format called dvr-ms. This container does allow for DRM, but MCE 2005 does not actually encrypt or restrict the content. I use my laptop (XP SP2) to play back content all the time.

    Have you played that "unrestricted" content in the dvr-ms format on anything but a Windows box?

    While .dvr-ms may, in theory, not be restricted, the lack of portability sure is a restriction in practice. Beyond being the default storage format for MCE, does .dvr-ms have any benefits over mpeg2?

    I've used MCE, and it has a stellar front-end. However, letting your front-end dictate your back-end is a good way to end up in an embarassingly awkward position.

    Do you know what tetrachromatism is? It's four-sample color vision, allowing those that have it to make out much finer shades of color as well as see into part of the UV spectrum. It has arisen recently, and currently only in women.

    Tetrachromatism has been around forever. It's not restricted to humans, and its mechanism is no different than any other side effects of late Barr body formation. This is grade-school biology.
