Some suggestions to make spotting phishing e-mail easier:
1) When an e-mail includes a web link, the e-mail software should display the actual link address in the e-mail (as part of the display).
For instance, I got a fake Royal Bank e-mail, that displayed visually the text: "https://www1.royalbank.com/english/netaction/sgne .html"
But when you view the message source, you see the link is actually: "http://www.mppagog-barlin.de/updating/w/https/www 1.royalbank.com/cgi-bin/rbaccess/rbannxcgi"
One look at the link, and I knew it was bogus!
I'm amazed that e-mail software doesn't do such an obvious step. You could go further and display a warning when the anchor text is a web address, but doesn't match the actual link address.
2) Keep a list of common businesses that are likely to be spoofed (ie finacial organizations), and whenever the e-mail mentions one, add to the message at top a warning banner like: "financial organizations never ask for personal info by e-mail. If this message does, it is likely fake. Contact your organization by phone to check." etc.
This is not true of all sofwtare. For software that does a lot of math calculations, it may use code aoptimized for SSE2 etc. They may ahve an unix version for x86 linux/bsd, but not PPC. This version may even use a crospplatform AIP like QT. Porting to macOS PPC would take a lot of rewriting. Getting it to run on xwindows on intel macOS might be trivial, as it's the SSE2 parts that are nonportable.
You assume that the software is windows. If it's unix for intel, theer should be little difficulty porting it.
Netscape inludes firefox rendering, and you can easily set it during install/1st config to never use IE engine.
Why Netscape? AOL has the clout to make the deal and support Netscape for free. If HP will install it, they must have some support for problems. With Netscape, they can pass the buck to AOL. That and they probably needed the nudge.
As for MS, they just lost re: netscape and antitrust so they aren't going to openly oppose this.
This is very good news as many people simply use the browser that comes with their PC. They may have heard about Netscape and Firefox, but they probably will never download it.
If it's on their PC, they will probably try it and hopefully use it.
Having a non IE browser installed by default with the PC is the best way to increase market share.
Hopefully this will pressure other manufacturers to follow suit.

Your analysis of #1 is completely flawed.
IE is no where near as secure. When iy fails, the results are generally much worse, a lot more often.
Changing settings doesn't make the code base more secure.
Most often changing settings may make IE unusable.
It's tru that Firefox adoption will only go so far if we rely on people to find out about Firefox, and have them download it.
If we wish Firefox to dethrone IE, then Firefox needs to be installed, with an icon on the desktop, on new PCs.
What is needed is for all supporters (users, spreadfirefox, supporters [mozilla org, companies like sun and IBM, Redhat etc]) to start putting pressure on PC companies to ship the PCs with Firefox on it.
Until this happens, we will have a hard time getting bigger numbers.
Negotiations with mozilla.org need to take place with these companies. Users need to start contacting and requesting that Firefox be preinstalled, stating they will choose another brand if they do not. You need to hit them in the pocketbook. Show that it's important to their customers, if you wish change.
I developed a severe RSI problem a couple of years ago. I couldn't type more than a few minutes without pain.
Turns out I had problems with my neck from a car accident and it was compressing the nerves to my arms. This caused the muscles to atrophy and soon they became so weak that typing/ mouse use caused me to badly strain the muscles in my forarm.
The solution was massage therapy and chiroprators.
I've yet to meet someone with RSI (hands) who didn't also have a back/neck/or shoulder injury!
The figures given by the author ignore second languages. Sure, there are millions of people speaking other languages, but most of them do not speak
each others, but many speak english as a second (third?) language. A more important datum would be the number of people who can read english. This would (for better or worse) dwarf any others.
If things continue as they are, I expect the following to happen: regional web pages will be targeted at regional languages. International
web pages will be in English as it is the common denominator. Perhaps there will be multiple versions, one or more in regional languages and one in english.
I eagerly await the release of WP suite for Linux and Corel Draw. I know WP suite has a voice recognition version for windows. Will there be such a version for Linux? Do you have any plans for integrating voice recognition with KDE/Gnome like IBMs via voice does for windows? I think having a general api so any engine can do, but actually shipping Corel linux with a version of Dragon speak configured would be a great way to distinguish your product!

I notice in the article from Pc mag article, they mentioned linux originally trounced NT, and then they went away and worked until they could beat linux. So, linux coders fix the problem, and all is well.
For a specific problem, if you through enough money at it, you can usually come up with a hack that will make you come out on top. Simply shows that we were a bit complacent perhaps..
Of course, MS ignored the fact that this version of NT only exists in their labs. The version out there that everyone is using is still getting its but kicked by the linux boxes out there!
I also think that it would be interesting if they had mixed the tests. Perhaps had the server do file and web serving and perhaps printing at the same time. Linux can handle all of this and still fly..
Some "Nerds" actually have an IQ bigger than their shoe size, and care about something more than recompiling a kernel. For that matter, how many people outside of Linus have written a kernel?
Before thrashing his book, maybe you should read it. It's excellent.
As for the book not being relavant to slashdot, clearly that's not the case. According to the data, a lot of slashdotters (including myself) have bought it..
As for Rob making money off the book sales.. That only happens if you click on the Amazon's link from slashdot (it tells you he will make money if you do). You can go to the site directly, if you choose.
Also, Rob and the slashdot crew spend a lot of time and effort to allow us to use this site. A site that obviously (due to its heavy usage) is greatly valued by many. A site we get to use for free. Why shouldn't he get something back? Particularly if you have the choice to circumvent this? I made a point of ordering the book through the/. link, as a thank you to Rob for providing me (and the rest of you too, I guess he has enough bandwidth and horsepower that I can share;-) with this site.
People, it's time we took a moment to think before we flame people. We wouldn't do it to the person's face, we shouldn't do it while hiding behind an e-mail address! It's just cowardly.

What courses would you like to see in a game design program (physics, multimedia, AI, pop culture, Sci fi fiction)? What sort of content?
What tools (software design environments, hardware) would you recommend?
Can you recommend any books on game design that you think are useful?
What would you say are the minimum skill set needed for a game designer?

Eagle wireless has a linux appliance like idrema,
but it is out already. See: www.eglw.com/english/new.html
It's pretty sleek. Even better, they will be integrating their wireless dsl with it that gives 11Mbs bandwidth!
