Are there any issues with getting a Dreamcast to play burned CD-Rs? I went to the site you suggested and this article leads me to believe some Dreamcasts may not play CD-Rs. Is there a non-black-magic way to tell if the Dreamcast I'm gonna drop $50 on will work?
The cable companies are planning to give the RIAA's case a hand and limit P2P file swapping.
This isn't helping the RIAA's case. Their case involves copyright law, fair use, royalty payments, etc. All this is doing is putting more money in the pockets of cable companies when people share files (and any files at that, not just the songs of RIAA artists). There is no angle here, currently, for the RIAA. I'd like the see the fight if the RIAA went to cable companies and said "um, can we take some of that new revenue?"
Fully OT here, but 50 karma is a license to share...
A guy named Jerry created that pinhole viewer page and made a little joke about 'jerry-rigging' something. Cute. But I've always understood the term to be 'jury-rigged'. So I did a minimal amount of net research. Earliest reference to 'jerry-rigged' I could find was 1919, while the Oxford English Dictionary shows 'jury-rigged' from 1788 (and 'jury-mast' and other uses of 'jury' for a temporary replacement for a damaged part of a ship as far back as 1616.) Jerry-rigged may be a recent variant, playing off the name 'Jerry' (war slang for German), implying substandard German quality. I'll stick with 'jury-rigged'.
If anyone in the last hundred years should be told, "no, YOU da man!" it's this guy.
Impressive and inspiring book so far (I'm 3 chapters into it). This is written in the first person, in his own words (naturally), and was edited after his death.

Okay, so being a ship's 'Computer Officer' seems like a dream job. Until you realize the demographics and computer literacy level of your typical cruiser. Listening to hour after hour of retired computer illiterates complain 'it's not doing anything' or 'what's double-click?' probably isn't very enjoyable.
To the/. editors... Rather than get/. readers whipped into a 'this is news' frenzy, please consider doing some basic research on your stories before publishing them. Four days ago, CNN published those winners, as simple news (not even a 'leak') back then.
Maybe chrisd was just hoping other people make mistakes similar to his original Lone Gunman fiasco.;-)
Traveling time was 85 hours over a span of 16 days,... DaimlerChrysler says the car reached speeds of more than 90 mph.
I have images of a subcompact full of sleep-deprived, coffee-fueled engineers on the interstate shouting, "Let's take this hydrogen rocket to the moon! Yeee ha!" as they pin the speedo needle.
You have good ideas there. Regarding this, though...
You'll almost certainly have to observe curfews where teenagers are concerned.
What is considered to be "out" after curfew? Can a teen stay at a friend's house? At a school-sanctioned overnighter? Or is it just the transportation to/from the event that you're concerned about? Could parental transportation to/from solve this?
I read that your past rides have been a Harley-Davidson Softail, a Fat Boy, and a Yamaha Dragstar 1100. I believe I see a Harley Sportster laid into the graphic on the front page of your web site, so is that the new one on the way? 883 or 1200? Any special plans for it? Engine mods?
nobody seems to mind if someone is playing 'snake' on their cell phone... Games like snake cause extreme academic decline.
No. It's too late. I have to inform you that academia has already declined beyond hope. And it has been due to an even more harmful, destructive habit by students in lecture halls over the past century. It's far more widespread than phone games, and the economies of the situation ensure that it always will be. The tools of destruction? A blank pad of paper, a pencil, and the desire to draw amusing and unrelated pictures while the professor is talking. Horrible thing, that. My informal observations indicate that the deadly paper/pencil/imagination combination has even greater penetration rates in the student market than mobile phones. The numbers approach 100% and show little sign of ever declining. Besides, I find the swooping and jerking motions of doodling to be far more offensive and distracting than the relatively restrained thumb movements of playing Snake.
What if I choose to exercise my freedom to write an application in pure machine code? Will the FSF not install it on their machines because they don't consider numeric opcodes and data to be legitimate source code anymore?! Or is writing in machine code without comments not a freedom that they respect?
I don't mean this as a flame, but I know the FSF loves their technicalities, so I'm curious how they'd view an application like this.
In reference to the FSF, RMS says: We have no non-free systems or applications on them now, and our principles say we must keep it that way.
So is this to say that their motherboard BIOS and all supporting microcontroller code, EPROMs, firmware and controller code in their video cards, ethernet cards, etc. all comes with source code?! Impressive. Where do they shop?
> 1) organize thoughts, 2) cover an entire agenda, 3) stay on topic Why is this important? It sounds exactly the opposite of what a grade 4 student should be doing.. should grade4 students be trained to be Drones?
Heheh. No, take it in context. Nobody of any age should be a Drone. But when you find yourself needing to present a case or argument or position, (by assignment or job or beliefs) you will generally be more persuasive if you are organized, don't run on too long, and stick to your topic rather than meander all over the place with ramblings.
Nobody should tell a Grade 4 student what the "correct" side of an argument is. Let them think for themselves and then give them the tools to influence people. A few effective techniques when they're young can go a long way!
None for powerpoint that I know of, but the world would be a better place without that piece of crap (or even substitutes).
I've seen Grade 4 children (no exaggeration) give a really compelling Powerpoint presentation on why space exploration is important. It struck me that this tool was really helping them: 1) organize thoughts 2) cover an entire agenda 3) stay on topic 4) present in an entertaining, fun way
It would have been equally great to see them use a non-MS tool, but without a doubt, presentation tools are a Very Good Thing for people who have ideas to communicate. Sure, the kids (and some execs I've seen!) used a few too many crazy/colorful slide transitions, but that kept the kids interested and let them have some fun while presenting their content.
Four lines?! I don't know where this Wolfram guy was trained, but I can declare the constant 42 in a single line. Well, I suppose that does leave 3 lines for comments. And if anything was worth commenting...
If the U.S. had a competitor in this race for Mars like they did for the moon in the late 60s, they would have a man there in a few short, focussed years. So, um, can we maybe pretend there's a competitive nation and get on with it?!
From the article: "Just a single pollen-sized fragment is believed to weigh several tons... The small size of strangelets means the blast is only big enough to have a very localised effect and humans are unlikely to be harmed."
"Unlikely" because the tiny blast is statistically unlikely to be near a person, I assume. So any theories on if these would actually damage a human if it DID pass through them?
I installed a skin called LCARTrek from the recommended Mozilla skins site. I restarted Mozilla (RC2, full Win2K install) to see the effect and it cause Mozilla to hang during startup (at the splash window). Killed the task. Re-ran Mozilla. Same hang. Anyways, in case something like this happens to anyone else... what I did to get past this was delete a file called Chrome.rdf somewhere within "Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Mozilla\". Sorry for the somewhat vague instructions, but I'm sure you'll figure it out if you need to. Naturally, I'm a little reluctant to try and other skins with RC2 now!
Some people with less pure intentions (e.g terrorists) might decide to do some redirecting.
Oh no. Terrorists might redirect traffic. Dear god, no! That might cause traffic congestion. NO! Please!
Yeah, back at the terrorist ranch, I'm sure the terrorist who redirects highway traffic and causes gridlock and a few accidents will be heralded as Terrorist of the Month(tm).

it could easily replace my toilet computer/laptop
If you're spending enough time on the toilet to need a computer there, may I suggest more fiber in your diet? Wow.
Expect a slow AltaVista response from this, but here's the easier way to click directly to a translated version of the specs page:

this is the first solution where the manufacturer has done something to combat the noise coming out of the BACK of the case
My systems guy would like to know if something similar could be used to combat noise coming out of the back of certain users?

The GPL requires "complete corresponding source code," and a sequence of integers is not the source code.
Feh. A real programmer sees machine code as perfectly readable source code.

Next, I think they should setup access points along the train tracks.
I agree. Think of the 1337 h0b05. 0wn1n6 all the train commuters' wireless notebooks & PDAs. Good stuff.
