What is the difference between charging people "extra" for something or including it in an inflated price?

Do you suppose the "free" shipping at amazon come at no expense? What is the difference between Vista Home and Vista Ultimate. Well, Vista Ultimate costs $200 more than Home, but it comes with additional "free" software.

If you are an at-will employee, which I imagine most professionals are in the US, there is little recourse you have. If there is no contract to protect you, you have little recourse. On the other hand if you were offered a job on Friday afternoon, you would not need to show up for work on Monday.

Your employer may have policies in place to prevent this, but I don't think there is much legal grounds you would have without a contract - aside from collecting unemployment.

OK, fine, but once a developer can tell Mac users to run their application in a Windows window. Why would they produce both a Mac and Windows version of any application. I think the mac's ability to Virtual PC at the same speeds as a regular Windows machine will be a death knell for development on the Mac

Want a Mac version of AutoCAD? No problem, just boot into Windows on your Mac and run it. And that's a high ticket sale. Why would anyone ever produce another Mac version of any game software ever again?

The Mac OS on Intel could very well be the end of software development on the Mac platform.

Still, if a lot of people start buying Macs and putting Windows on them - just because the design is better. Apple would be crazy not to support that, and take that market share away from Dell and others. I just don't think that scenario bodes very well for the Mac OS.

I hate to be cynical, but I bet the reason that they are still selling the PowerBook at the same price is that they have 30-day price protection on-line and in their stores. If they were to cut the price now, all those people would be wanting refunds. If they don't sell many for the next 30-days, they will not have to offer refunds to the people who bought laptops last month. This month they will sell the new ones only. Also the new ones are not available for the next thirty days. What about people who need a laptop in the next two weeks?

They have to sell something. Why lower the price until they need to?

For the IT staff of a small organization, Windows XP offers three important improvements to Windows 2000 (off the top of my head)
    1. Built in remote access. You can shadow/remote control a machine without leaving your desk.
    2. System save states. A user mucks up hear system, you can roll it back to the way the computer was before she installed the Aquarium Screen saver and assorted spyware.
    3. Built in not too shabby firewall.
    I thought of some more.
    4. Faster boot times.
    5. Support for Bluetooth
    6. Better wireless support.
    7. Lots of Group Policy Objects for securing clients are XP only.

All of these (first three) things of course may be added on to Windows 2000 for added expense from third parties, but having it in the OS means it will be patched and supported by MS PSS.

Windows XP is leaps and bounds better on laptops than 2000, but for a desktop machine, you'd have to decide whether any of the 7 points above are worth switching for. I would say any two would be worth the switch.

This card, designed specifically to support the dual link DVI connection, delivers 2560 by 1600 resolution.
