Do you think you have access to all information available in the US? No. The government already censors some of the information we would like to read because 'it is not good for us'. Kennedy, Roswell, others anyone.
The government decides what 'we the people' should be allowed to read.
Linux has been around longer than WinNT so therefore it is not the upstart here.
The Linux kernel was not set up to compete against MS. It was written to be a good kernel that is all so tech folk did not have to suffer using early Windows.
Arguably KDE is written to compete with Windows but then it is very cross platform and not related to Linux. But the basic X environment has been around a lot longer the MS.
The author could be considered to be correct about the multiple distributions having an adverse effect on Linux aceptance... but then Linux is not in competition.
Is OpenSource trying to compete with Windows? Or, are a few companies, selling open source software, trying to compete with windows?
But if the server is moved off shore then there is nothing they can do (as previously stated), but... the FEC can say the politician is using an off shore server.
If I were a politician I would just say that my opposition were trying to get me in trouble.
Make friends with the FCC and when they get to trust you alter the broadcasting flag to something even more sinister, like a swastika (even though the flag itself is innocent enough, the connotation is bad).
This new flag will be rejected and with all the publicity, there will go the whole flag.
This technique is used time and again by our good old US Government. Join the bad guys and then make 'em look even worse. Then we, the people, want to bomb the f*ck out of 'em.
This has to be one of the most outrageous ideas I've heard, well, today.
Why not do the same as the Europeans and just put more tax on the gas itself. Tax people for having fuel hungry cars and for doing more miles. Very simple and you don't have to have complex databases.
Dunno. But their web site creator does not know what OS stands for (in the typical meaning). Of course, this is GNU. You are welcome to your own opinion, as was Darwin.

Sir, you are wrong. The airlines actively encourage the changing of seats after boarding. If there are empty seats, they strongly suggest you move about.
In the same way people swap car brands and jam brands, people will want to swap their proprietory DB brand. You use their stored procedures, you tie in. They have you.
As we all know, Sun controls the development of Java. And one day, might start charging for it. IBM and others are concerned about this. IBM makes a great deal of cash from WebSphere. They would like to know it is a solid platform, dependant on nothing else but depended on by everyone. After all, servlet containers are taking over where the OS left off. Financially speaking of course.
A few years ago (1997?) in the UK on a beach on the east coast near Harwich I was skipping stones with friends on a small estuary (river entering the sea) where the pebbles were numerous and the water calm. Amongst the pebbles I found the remainder of a modern standard glass milk bottle. All that remained was the round base of the bottle which I discovered was the perfect skipping "stone". The stone skipped at least 34 times before the skips were too small.
If Mandrake Move or knoppix have gimp on them (and I suspect they do) then you could run it off the CD and see how Gimp behaves, without ever having to touch your harddrive.
For knoppix you might like to try booting with the option SCREEN=1400x1050 (or the like) to set a good resolution for your screen.
The authors of the article clearly do not know the difference between the Internet which are all using as soon as we connect to our ISPs and the World Wide Web which is a linked set of pages of information.
How this simple fact could be missed detracts from, and also complicates, the information contained in the article. It actually makes it meaningless. But then obfuscation is often the reason for press releases!
Humm. The problem is an old one. Not just a rise but perhaps the perception, as our developer friends ages, of a world bigger than just his development community. The problem is that his development work is just one of the many areas of a company which must function to enable the company to function.
The role of the administrator(s) is to ensure that all users are able to complete their work with the minimum of fuss and the maximum of security. From whom? Well, competition, disgruntled workers, idiots, worms, virus' etc etc etc.
The list continues to grow and the developer is not generally aware, nor should he be, of all the areas the administrators have to cover.
In the end it comes down to communication and perhaps the tone of the article relates to the problem well. The author is not able to communicate politically. Calm down. Talk WITH the administrators and not TO them. Try to understand where they are coming from and maybe, just maybe they will climb down from the pedestal on which you place them and be able to help you.

Why does a doctor who has successfully cloned a dog need to falsely claim he can clone a stem cell?
Is it more likely he has been shut-up by someone?
Conspiracy theory or not?
Actually they had it when I was in the UK over 5 years ago.

It works.

Nor does Big Brother have to watch you.
ROT13 all downloads. N times. De-Rot until file becomes valid.

This would be same Andy Tanenbaum who created Minix, for forerunner of Linux? And nobody mentioned it?
Wow!
What's the darn switching time? Can't find it. The really important measurement and I can't find it.
Herriot-Watt were doing this on a physically bigger scale back in the 80s and managed something like a 10ms switch speed.
I don't think so!
3 secs of your 5 sec 0-60 time.
I don't think so!

depending on which charity, is a great way of making polical friends.
Disney in trouble with anyone?
What happens when you return to the store in the morning and say, "this DVD would not play last night."
No evidence... Cos it certainly wont play now!

From a financial standpoint, and let's face it, that is from where IBM is talking, IBM stand to gain everything from an open source Java.
Fair's fair IBM. If Sun offers Java then perhaps you should volunteer WebSphere!

We have to get used to change, even the released version of the original Radio Plays is different from the actual broadcasts.
"You robot can humm like Pink Floyd" seems to have disappeared...
I saw this in a TV commercial so it must be possible. ;-)
Should not take more than a mere infinate number of seconds.
