  2. Speaking as a meat eater... on Engineering the $325,000 Burger · · Score: 2

I feel that eating meat which was not once running through the fields, robs me of the deep sense of superiority I get from being at the top of the food chain. Who knows how long we may remain here (alien invasion or pending zombie apocalypse)? I say let's enjoy our dominant position while we have it and not waste our time on defenseless lab meat.

Sure, that sounds worth it. When you start giving me random increases in pay, I'll start doing random amounts of unpaid overtime.

Just because you can't hear it doesn't mean a microphone can't pick it up. I am not going to google this because I am lazy, but I would not be surprised at all if a good quality, well aimed, highly directional mic could pick up enough of a noise to run an analysis.

So it is legal for me to set up a website with links to child porn and how to make bombs? Even the Pirate Bay themselves acknowledge what they do is not legal - the PIRATE bay!? ... and not much more. Once the novelty has worn off (say once I watched Jaws 3), the additional hassle of everyone having to wear ridiculously expensive glasses and cram together in front of the TV to get as perpendicular to the screen as possible pretty much destroys the whole movie watching experience for me. Coupled with the fact that every damn movie now is full of contrived scenes so we can experience the wonders of this "new" technology. I'll stick with the good 'ol 2 visual dimensions thanks.

Yes, this ^^^. There are several guys in my office (we are propeller heads, so it's ok to be weird) who have closed headphones on with white noise playing. It is a well known technique for concentrating because it creates a baseline background noise which your brain tunes out quite quickly but still masks irregular noises.

Some people are mentioning noise cancelling headphones. In my opinion these won't work for your purposes as they are not well suited for cancelling voices. They work great for filtering out constant predictable frequencies.

That "much easier problem" in the terms of the 1960s was just as big, if not bigger than a mars mission with today's understanding of space travel. We have already sent men into space for considerably longer than 8 days - in fact we'd already done that before we went to the moon. Granted, this is everything on a bigger scale, but the unknowns facing us are nothing compared to what we faced when we first put a man in a rocket.

  23. No time to train?! on Millionaire Plans Mission To Mars In 2018 · · Score: 2

We took 8 years to go from never having launched a man in a rocket to landing them on the moon and bringing them back safely. Although the scope of this mission is a lot bigger, we are also clued up on many aspects of space travel we had no idea about back then. 5 years is *ample* time to train a crew.

They're not outlawing "normal" colleges here so I don't see what the problem is. This is just a different delivery mechanism. This quote: "which means that they spend hard-earned tuition dollars and get nothing in return" really bothers me. Nobody is forcing anyone to spend hard-earned dollars. Such a co-dependent approach to education is why colleges are increasingly getting the reputation for pandering to the lowest common denominator.
