    Sounds REAL easy to confirm this one ,huh?
    SCO could not be that self-defeating, could they? So, what they waited around until Linux was firmly rooted in many infastructures, then sue? ie. no money in protecting their property when johnny geek and his 12 friends were the only types that used Linux..
    I dunno, there have been equally asinine tech lawsuits in recent times....but this seems way off, IMHO, and somewhat suicidal for SCO

    The reason Lexmark is pissed is because it sells its printers as a loss leader, and then makes money on the ink cartridges.

    This is not new. All console makers do the same thing. The XBox costs more than $149 to make, but MS sells them as loss leaders so they can make money on the games. Sony does the same. Nintendo does the same.

    Thats their choice as a manufacturer to set up their profit structure that way. If it doesn't work out for them, tough for them. Try a different structure!
    Holy shit, I'm gonna sell HDTVs, at a major loss to my company, then if you try to watch any other channel that doesn't generate Ad revenue for my company (so I can re-coup my losses, not your fault, and you OWN the TV and all) I'm gonna kick and scream and sue,SUE,SUE! :p
    Just because Sony,Nintendo,MS do it to, doesn't make it a sound model for everyone

    I for one am glad that I'm not a Kentucky citizen, ie. my taxes are being spent in part to entertain this trial.
    Under section 1201 of the DMCA, it is generally unlawful to circumvent technology that restricts access to a copyrighted work.
    Generally unlawful? Thats what they're hoping will win them this case? A broad statement...how general is the unlawfullness? LOL
    the company claims the Smartek chip mimics the authentication sequence used by Lexmark chips
    Is this something the consumer is aware of when purchasing the printer? That only Lexmark© carts will be "allowed"? Its amazing what the technology market can get away with as far as trying to control what the consumer, who owns the product, can do "lawfully" with it. This shiznit is out of control.

    Yes, theres alot to do with .NET
    But whats been seen so far?
    Yes, its new tech, but devs have had betas and pre-releases for a long while before official release. By stating it will "further" .NET .......further from what?
    There is no real perception as to where .NET stands today! Once the .NET server is ok for release and implemented that may change significantly....

    good point! I'm not saying that past Macromedia buy-outs are any less "wrong" per se, or any for that matter....but the current issue is the MS buying Macromedia, so I'm addressing that.
    What sucks is that its so hard for tech developers to maintain financial security, thus leading them into situations where buy-outs become necessary for the survival of the product

    Flash would give Microsoft access to tools for building rich interfaces on both desktops and mobile devices, furthering .NET.
    furthering .NET? Has .NET even left the starting gate in all seriousness? Other than the msn portal.
    It would be sad to see another innovator get gobbled up, I've been impressed with macromedia since the ol' Director days, it just seems shitty when a big guy buys up a brand or name then tries to pawn it off as their own.

    The saddest example of late is Infogrames trying to ride the name recognition of Atari of all things! WTF? LOL

    I agree, when I read the story header, I was suprised at the "Whatever."

    Maybe the editors are just sad and angry that guests and interviewees are well aware of the editorial *cough* standards here and since this was HIS reply to questions asked of him, he wanted to make sure they were presented properly. Those being a reflection of his ideas and opinions.

    Man, that sucks that that was such a big risk for Square. To this day I'm still surprised at just how crappy the Spirits Withins' script was, I mean it was surprising, I think they simply got caught up in the visuals, and were "oohhhhh" and "ahhhhhhhh"-ing themselves......
    Both companies have made great games in the past so to have them combine could be a very good thing. I just would have never thought "SQUARE" to have to merge with anyone

    Politiepersbericht Bekentenis in brand UT (Universiteit Twente) Enschede: De vrijdagmiddag jl. aangehouden 26 jr. man uit Hengelo, heeft zondagavond bekend dat hij ook de brand heeft gesticht op het terrein van de Universiteit Twente op woensdagmorgen 20 november jl. Bij deze brand werden twee vleugels van een van de gebouwen op het terrein geheel verwoest en werd een schade veroorzaakt van tussen de 40 en 50 miljoen euro. De 26 jr. was vrijdagmiddag aangehouden nadat door getuigen was gezien dat bij een ander gebouw op het Universiteitsterrein een beginnend brandje was ontstaan. Op aanwijzingen van deze getuigen kon de 26 jr. daarna worden aangehouden. Over het hoe en waarom van de brandstichting op de 20e november jl., kunnen op dit moment geen nadere mededelingen worden gedaan. De verdachte zal hierover nog nader worden gehoord. Wel kan worden medegedeeld dat de 26 jr. een medewerker is van de Universiteit Twente. Het personeel op de Universiteit Twente is ondertussen op de hoogte gebracht van zijn bekentenis. Vandaag wordt hij voorgeleid bij de rechter-commissaris in Almelo. I ran this thru googles translator as French, German and Italian, and they all stayed the same! Is this the new Universal Language© that I've been hearing about?! :)

    Hey, they guy is just making a buck right? (actually alot of bucks), would I do this.....probably not. But, until there is software to monitor mass mailings, I say, good for them, make their money while they can....

    why hasn't there been software that would watch incoming messages, and say if > 10,000 messages come thru with the same subject line, flip those over to a "suspect" pile for administrator review, yeah yeah I know admins don't have the time to look thru the msgs, but there will either have to be a regulation on spam so its easily identifiable (header) or software to weed them out adequately, there are some out there.....but how well do they work?

    otherwise, guys like this will cash in and live large while, we whine about what a scumbag he/she is.... :)

    Yeah, actually I have "Teach yourself PHP4 in 24 hours" on my desk, it's been there since I first bought the book...generally books on desks at my job are more used by others that may not be at the same level you are at in a particular skill-set or are interested in learning about it, kinda like an internal library...

    now books like "The SQL Programmers Reference" on my desk, yes that I use for reference :)

    • Teach Yourself UNIX server restoration in 24 hours or else.
    • Teach Yourself Office Diplomacy in 12 Hours or less.
    • Teach Yourself Creative IT resume writing in 2 Hours.


    *Disclaimer* I have not read the book in question and the above is simply a joke, but the thought of teaching UNIX system administration in 24 hours seems unlikely....covering basics, maybe...most of these books seem to serve that purpose and are great as a reference in alot of cases.

    Bwahahahahahahahaha!
    Ok now that thats out of my system.....
    McFarlane is a businessman first and has been for a long time, once he was a great illustrator (probably still is...when he does draw....) and his high horse attitude just makes stories like this and situations like this very amusing.
    I was actually shocked when I read this headline, as I have not followed comics seriously in many years....but those two are big boys in the industry....and I'm glad for Gaiman
    I can almost see McFarlane standing there before trial in his best brooding glare (ala the intro to the Spawn animated series) saying "....you cannot hope to win against Lord McFarlane, you cannot hope...ahh screw it....would you care for a limited edition gold-plated Malebolgia figure and we'll call it even?"

    Simple question....yeah, security wasn't so big an issue back when win3.1 was out, especially as far as home desktops go, but once they moved into the "server" market that should have been one of their top priorities!
    Laziness?
    Lack of Foresight?
    Underestimated end-user savvy and knowledge?
    Too much emphasis on Microsoft PLUS! development instead?
    All of the above?
    I wish I could say things like that quote at my job and still have a job; and make the money they do to boot!

  24. It all depends on the shop......and you on Public vs. Private Sector? · · Score: 1
    I'm a recently (~6 months ago) hired state employee, and the situation here is great. My last job in the Private sector was "a market leader" and a tech company, strangely that job required me to do the exact same thing, over and over and over, no innovation, stagnant, boring. Now this was mainly due to the management, since I've been on with the gov't gig I've been able to get into alot of tech that I never would have in my other job.

    Do I like the idea of job security? Absolutely.

    Do I like that my pay is lower on average? Not really, but that I'm willing to take based on my circumstances (new house, wife and small daughter)

    ..and who says I can't work side projects at "real world" rates?

    That to me is the nicest, stable job and benefits, plus I have time to do side work to make up (actually make out better) for the difference in pay. And still have time for myself/family. The side work I can control, so if I want to relax a few months, no problem!

    Kinda take the best from both worlds... :)

    I agree, Q3 Arena is a solid game, but basically its just more of the same, just perty-ier! I mean if the speed of the rockets and the physics calculations for rocket jumping are the only thing besides looks thats different between Q2 and Q3, I sure hope its not going to be the same with Doom3.
    I hear the "its a formula that works.." arguement, because it does....
    but c'mon with all the technical know how ID has, they can make a gorgeous, engrossing, game, right???
