That would be a bad assumption. Google "Richard Gariott space" and you'll get a long list of news articles on his visit to the ISS, topped by an official web site for the event. He launched on Oct. 12 and returned to Earth Oct. 23.
Depends on your definition of "United Nations". The current structure of the UN was created after the war, true. But the Allies frequently called themselves "the United Nations" during the war, and the post-war UN was built upon the wartime alliance (there's a reason that the five permanent members of the Security Council were the five major Allied powers).
If the Sudafed made you suddenly try to intentionally run down every pedestrian in sight, I think taking away your driver's license would have to be considered, yes.
Though you (among others) might not be comfortable with someone who is mentally ill teaching kids,
Yes, we are truly unreasonable when we are uncomfortable with teachers WHO THREATEN STUDENTS WITH SHARP OBJECTS. Jesus Frickin' Christ.
5) In case you haven't gotten the theme here, there is a difference between a bad teacher and someone who is ill. There is a difference. You should get to know it.
And sometimes someone is a bad teacher *because* they are ill. Such a person should get sympathy, and treatment, but they sure as hell shouldn't be allowed to keep teaching.
LAUSD is the 2nd largest district in the country. This year alone, there were 46,496 teachers employed in the district. In one year. I would estimate that the average year over the last 15 years saw 43858 teachers. 183/15 = 12.2 teachers contested per year. 12.2/43858 teachers means that there were problems with.03 PERCENT of the teaching staff. That's roughly one out of every 3,600 teachers each year.
Because, as the article says, the union contract has become so ironclad that it's not even worth the trouble to *try* to fire anybody any more. This isn't evidence as to how great the LA teachers are--it's evidence as to how set-in-concrete ossified the system has become. It doesn't matter what you do, or don't do. They won't even try to fire you.
You are only thinking about public schools in America there exists private schools too.
And if you decide to send your kid to one, you get to pay for both the private school and the public school you're not using! What a deal! Especially if you can't afford to pay for two schools at once.
Students in a bad school can leave to a Private school too.
If you can afford it. Public schools are the one single biggest factor in ensuring that the poor will stay an underclass in this society.
What's the current dollargold piece conversion rate?
The Player's Handbook states that 50 gold pieces weigh a pound. Given that this is a medieval-style economy, its worth should be completely dependent on how much gold is in it. Now, a gp can't be pure gold (because pure gold is far too soft to make circulating coins out of). Estimating how pure it is is complicated by the fact that the PHB doesn't tell us the volume of the thing (it states the diameter but not the thickness). Historically, gold coins have generally been around 22 carat when the government wasn't adulterating the coinage, so we'll go with that. Therefore a gp contains.02 lb x (22/24) =.018333 lb = about 8.3 grams of gold. Current quote on gold is $28.98 per gram, so we come up with 1 gp = $240.
So we should break up the large banks, and replace them with an untold number of smaller, local banks that each follow their own strategy ?
Letting them go bankrupt should have exactly this effect. Destroy the whole, sell of the pieces one-by-one to the highest bidder.
The problem is that you can't do it that way, precisely because they are currently "too big to fail." Try this analogy: we're currently holding up the roof of a building with one big support beam. Since if that support beam fails, the building collapses, it would be better to have a lot of small support beams, such that one or two could fail and be replaced without endangering the building. However, the solution of "Remove the big support beam and use the material to make the required small support beams" is not going to work well.
The problem with zealots and fanatics is that these kinds of setbacks only help to make them believe that they just need to fight harder.
Maybe so, but it doesn't matter much when the zealot/fanatic in question is being reduced to the status of a lunatic ranting on the streetcorner. He's done.
Slashdot's software takes the non-ASCII apostrophe and freaks out, and produces "Ãf(TM)"
Correction: Microsoft software produces directional apostrophes and quotes by using bizarre encodings that they call "Smart Quotes". Nobody else uses these encodings, so when "Smart Quotes" run up against anything that's not Microsoft, you get garbage.
Rail slower than car? What is it that Amtrak does wrong?
Mostly, they don't own the track. Track belongs to freight rail corporations who have no interest in paying the track maintenance necessary for high-speed passenger trains.

A regulated industry IS a system where the big guys call all of the shots.
I don't care if she had notarized permission from God. She's a proven threat to the children and has no business teaching.

"No...no...no. Quicker, easier, more seductive."
In my experience, they last ten minutes. Less than that if you do your corpse run.

How do you know? Apparently, just because they say it's new, doesn't mean it *is* new...

When Microsoft never stops doing said thing, that's to be expected.
You, sir, have not spent enough time impaling game sprites with a harpoon. It's GET OVER HERE!
Jack Thompson has so repeatedly shot himself in the foot that I don't think that there's any feet left any more.
I am against funding for anti-pirate robots unless we can manage to work in ninjas somehow. And zombies.
All the purple prose in the dialog.
I thought the lesson of video games was that if you beat up the hooker, you got your $40 *back*.
Not me! I'm sticking with XP 95!
