    I don't think so - in my experience, most infrastructure equipment have terrible passwords. The truth is a simple dictionary attack would probably crack half the cisco routers out there. Just because it isn't sophisticated doesn't mean it won't work.

    No, there is nothing wrong with patching, it's just that no company has ever bothered to ship an operating system which doesn't make applying patches like pulling teeth (including Sun here as well).

    If you had any experience with BSD or Debian you would know that all it takes is a sensible package installation and update tool, and a sensible and user respectful approach to design (e.g., NOT including bug fixes and enhancements along with security updates).

    You have a good point - look at all the other "high prestige" companies which entered low end markets (PC's). Hewlett Packard, IBM, Digital all suffered blows to their reputation by entering the low end PC market. There may be nothing else for them to do though.

    Nothing to see here at all, this isn't even news. Every ISP, whether dial up or one leasing OC-3's has an abuse desk. When a customer generates enough abuse complaints and does not respond, you get cut off. They ALL do that.

    Ans that's just media ... (which would be one of the primary culprits where stress is concerned).

    However, "stress" isn't really the problem, it's much deeper than that, and you'll realize that after reading those books. All you're going to get from slashdot are the "but I love working on my computer and programming all day" sort of proclamations, but those really miss the point of (what I think) you're trying to get at.

    I went through two periods of unemployment in the last few years, one for six months and one for four, and during those times must have sent dozens of resumes to postings on internet job boards. Never got a single response.

    And before you ask, my resume was quite well done (albeit conservative) and I tailored every cover letter to the company I was applying to. I got responses from newspaper ads, but not a single one from internet job boards. I think basically the HR dept just throws the responses in the trash bin.

    open source is capitalistic - it reduces your costs allowing you to make greater profits

    That has nothing to do with capitalism, which has to do with ownership of capital - in the case of software, source code. The GPL socializes software, and could possibly be described as capitalistic in any sense. Profits don't really have anything to do with capitalism per se.

    I'm the only one who cooks in the family and a sysadmin by profession ...

    Usually if I go over to cook for my family I wind up looking at the mal/spyware virus infected pieces of junk. After three - four months most peoples pc's really need to be wiped clean. Unfortunately I'm not up on all the windows crap anymore since I stopped using it years ago.

    I have to say I can't believe that this "disease" is as prevalent as it supposedly is, but no one seems to talk about causes; as even though the condition may not be new, the diagnosis of it is very new.

    What about diets? Too much sugar? Caffeine perhaps? Children eat way too much sugar in america and parent are only too happy to feed it to them. What about all the additives that are put in almost all food?

    Imagery? We live in an image based culture - we are bombarded with images constantly - imagery is hostile to rational thought and it's about time people started taking this issue seriously. I am mainly talking TV here, but also signs and ads. Most of what is on television is disjointed and caters to the shortest attention span.

    Advertising? We are bombarded with trivial lies all the time - from all prices ending in ".99" to fast food restaraunts in strip malls promoting themselves as "neighborhod restaraunts". What is the cumulative effect of this mountain of nonsense, really? I can't belive it has no effect on the human psyche at all.

    What's worse is that it's always the soccer mom yuppie retards driving their kids (all armored up in helmets and various protective crap for their day at school no less) who are driving some 6 ton Nimitz class crew operated Ford monstrosity at high speeds while yakking on the goddamn phone about their dogs pedicure appointment.
