    Red Hat releases an update of their distribution every so often, they called things like "RHEL 3
    update 2 (3,4,5 etc.). Debian does the same thing (3.0r1(r2,3,4)). Are you really this dense?

    And there is always some post like yours, which clearly demonstrates you haven't even tried to figure out the answer to this simple question.

    rpm systems: rpm -q --changelog
    deb systems: /usr/share/doc/changelog.Debian

    These are almost always more informative that the kind of crap I see on commercial unixes.

    There is no such things as "patch levels" or "clusters of patches" in any linux distro I know of.

    It is, in fact, a rather dumb idea anyway.

    Each package is updated alone, as it should be.

    Remember, CUPS has nothing to do with preparing a data stream for printing. It is merely a queue manager. All it does to prepare a data stream is to hand it off to the filter program.

    This is completely incorrect. CUPS is a full featured RIP and postscript processor. It does support arbitrary binary printing, however, and this is exactly what happens when you print to cups from windows via samba. Please see the cups documentation.

    If cups is just a "dumb spooler", explain lease how the heck it can print pdf, jpeg, hp-gl, tiff, and hundreds of other formats directly to your postscript printer?

    If you don't have a postscript printer, yes, you must use a ppd that calls a intermediary driver (e.g., hpijs) that cups just passes the job to.

    ... but, for my part, I am most productive in a spartan environment with no eye candy and no distractions - for me this means the linux console or some minimalist, boring wm like fluxbox or fvwm.

    When in KDE, or Gnome I find I'm fiddling with doo-dads and thingy bobs more than getting anything done.

    Windows is simply out of the question; there are too many barriers to usage and too much "can't get there from here" bullshit going on.

    A friend of mine worked in an aquarium store as a kid. There was an octupus in one of the tanks.

    One day, many of the expensive fish started "dissappearing". The owner immediately suspected the employees and installed security cameras.

    The cameras revealed the octopus was crawling out of its tank, eating the fish, and crawling back.
