Look at their webpage in the "software" section. I have a hard time believing that all of the same apps that run under Linux (and probably BSD) were all ported to this proprietary OS. I see pretty much the same multimedia apps that are available that I use under Linux.

I would definately concentrate on increasing programming skill or taking business management classes, or possibly fail at BOTH!!

Contracting is a good start because they usually demand good technical skills while introducing the concept of "econonmics" as it applies to how much money you make for the contracting company and how productive you are for the client.

  3. IT (or MIS) has always been a boondoggle on Is Today's IT an Undervalued Asset? · · Score: 1

Every company I have worked for had an IT department that managed to have a swelled head to match its budget. They typically were egomaniacs, and treated the nerd/geek engineering staff with disdain. This was really due to the fact that most of the engineers could do the IT job as well as their own.
We finally chased IT out of the engineering building and maintained our network ourselves (and had better uptime)

  4. Linux is a great, powerful pain in the ... on A Linux User Goes Back · · Score: 1

I love Linux. I have made a living doing nothing but Linux development and integration for over two years. Mostly stand alone applications and servers are the meat and potatoes. But I do NOT push Linux on friends and family for desktop use because I will end up being their support lifeline, and I do not have enough time. Even when I help set up broadband firewall servers, It takes a couple of days to get the people out of my hair after the server is doing everything it is supposed to. The people realize the power and versatility of Linux, but they always want to do more, and they cannot do it themselves. How many times do you have to explain that you have to log in as root to stop/restart servers (how do I log in as root?)

Another issue that I would love to have someone explain to me is - how does a vendor support a device under Linux, when most times a binary driver needs to be compiled for every popular distribution as well as the version of distribution or the driver could fail. Even if source is supplied by a vendor, the average Windows type user would be lost.

There will always be two levels of computer users - my type and the type that will get frustrated by Linux's sheer overwhelming visible complexity. Hell - I am so tired of being asked why Windows locked up again, but supporting the same crowd on Linux would make me crazy - even when it never locks up!

Hey Linux runs excellent on old hardware under crappy conditions with noone at the helm - but it requires an above average user to change the way it works.

As soon as you start to rely on a resource, you fall down when it gets pulled out from under you. Is that not the strength of Linux, that you rely on a pool of people, not companies? And when companies contribute, you get a short free ride (some alot longer)!

  6. Counter offer is the beginning of the end on Is it Wrong to Accept an Employment Counter-Offer? · · Score: 1

When a counter offer is made, some things have usually already
    happened:
    1. You already were unhappy enough to look for another job.
Usually because you want more money and they won't
    give it, or title/responsibility...
    2. Another company made an offer for something I assume
you were interested in enough to go through the process
    of have an offer extended.

Now if you are for real:
You wrote a resignation and turned it in.
If you were worth a crap, you were swarmed upon to
be convinced that this is a mistake. You will inform them
that your decision is final. When they counter offer,
you can ask, "If I was worth this NOW, why was I not worth this
WHEN I ASKED FOR MORE MONEY BEFORE???". (and if you did not
ask for more money before, you are too dumb to work for me...)

A good manager will have already taken care of you,
or faced with a resignation, will wish you the best of
luck. You cannot allow people to hold companies hostage,
soon everyone will try the manuver. (I fired a few
"give me an office or else...")

I have let many people go when they expect a counter
offer. The good people know that I am fighting for them
pay wise, and I let them know if I cannot compete.
I found that more productivity is gained when you
    are honest about the environment.

I also got the company to raise all of the
engineers salary a minimum of 10% when I convinced
them that we were going to lose most of them. This
was an unbelievable boost of morale. But a stupid
company doing one right thing still can't save the world...
