  1. Near earth asteroids on Stephen Hawking Asks The Internet a Question · · Score: 1

Grab an asteroid, use solar furnaces to make aluminum, nickle and iron and silicon from the asteroid, drop it to earth as cheap raw materials, and use the mass to attenuate energy incident on earth. Food production should not be a problem unless we can't get rid of all of these little warlords that are killing their people so they can get the newest ak47 shipment from Russia or China. The raw materials can be directly converted to energy--aluminum--or used to make new solar cells cheaper with higher purity silicon. Also, get as much of humanity off of the planet as we can--preferably working in mining, production, or other activities offworld.

...politics. Evangelical christianity is famous for incorporating many of the psychological programming techniques that we often see in a cult--not necessarily to the extent that a cult would apply them--to encourage membership and facilitate control by priviledged members. To allow a contradictory theory to confuse the members--such as evolution, or proper theological studies--would open the door for questioning of the authority of the controlling members. This is a common occurrence in almost all groups, even in the scientific and educational community. To allow or accept the possibility of other realities in conflict with the 'fundamental interpretation' of the bible would be a bad political mistake. I would chalk this up to attempts to maintain control of the political base in order to facilitate growth and dominance, rather than a quest for the truth. It may be that the common member might actually believe the story, but it should be hard to believe that the more 'superior' members of the more radical evangelical groups believe the statements. Although, it is possible that the mechanisms that enforce the rigid fundamental interpretation that were set in place in the late 19th and during the 20th century might have been bought in to by the current leadership, it is hard to believe that it is more than simple political control actions.

    not hardly!
See www.abymc.com or www.backyardmetalcasting.com. I have a furnace that cranks out about 6lb of molten aluminum in about 1/2 hour. It uses perlite and furnace cement cast inside of a popcorn tin with a pipe hole in the bottom for air blast. I use kingsford charcoal and a pipe crucible for fuel and melting area. The patterns can be made out of EPS--all of that polystyrene that you get when you unpack your monitors and such, using a hot wire cnc device as a cutter. This is rapid prototyping on the cheap. All together i have spent >$100 for the working furnace and the hot wire cutter. The cnc stuff will be more costly, but not much more than $500 for the driver and motors, unless i convert my sherline mill which would require me to include it's cost $800.
    so:
$100 for cheap furnace and blower
$500 for driver and stepper motors
$800 for sherline, taig, or hf mini mill
$300 for cheap computer running linux and the free cnc driver package--i am not sure what it is yet.
$1700 dollars, if you are willing to work on the cheap and forgo alot of tools including grinders, drill presses--the sherline is just too slow--etc.
You may also need a good welder if you want to make your own crucible and sturdy crucible tongs as well as safety gear. Again, you can make a cheap welder out of microwave oven transformers and cheap harbor freight holders. Again, this stuff is all dangerous and I am not a professional, so do not attempt anything that I have just described here.
