While there may come a day when this is necessary, we're far from that point now.
The man suspected of cheating in the article was relying on analysis being performed somewhere outside of the tournament hall, which was then broadcast to him. This was enabled by having the moves of all the games broadcast live over the internet (which normal for tournaments like this). When they suspected him of cheating they disabled the broadcast, and he blundered predictably. It seems that all they need to stop this kind of cheating is a simple one or two move delay on the broadcast of games.
The economics of chess mean there isn't enough prize money to cover the cost of very sophisticated methods of cheating at the rank-and-file tournaments. There is money for the top 10 players in the world, so if cheating spreads that far maybe a faraday cage will show practical application.
The drones were diving straight at the ground, so it's not even clear that it shot them down. Really you could just shine a flashlight at something already crashing and make the same summary.
The debt ceiling isn't about spending more money, it's about paying the debts that we've already accepted. Not increasing the debt ceiling is like trying to get out of debt by not paying your credit card bill.
Deflation.
When nobody can afford goods which are growing exponentially cheaper to produce we should start to see massive gains in purchasing power for consumers. Furthermore, one great way to combat deflation is by printing money, so a welfare state makes sense.
My concern, however, is that this deflation will affect industry asymmetrically, where some components and such will be unaffordably expensive. If we don't have a smart government to steer us through such a transition we will have to do a lot of suffering before things start to operate smoothly again.
It's not just about the tools (bombs), we are looking at a future where the rich have genetic and cybernetic enhancement. It's no longer just going to be a financial difference between classes.
A single engineer designing automation systems makes obsolete the jobs of many, many workers. The automation industry will only work by removing far more jobs than it creates. A job that goes elsewhere is still a job, it's just somewhere else. Ultimately this will create effects similar to a recession, except that the economy will not be in recession and economic growth will not create more jobs.
You just sound like all those blacksmiths who complained that the car will destroy the horse shoe industry. And it did!:) And that wasn't that bad either.
Yes, but the discussion isn't about an industry that can be replaced with another industry, the discussion is about removing most of the jobs from all of the industries.
Streaming services have woefully poor selection. DVD by mail takes 3-5 days to receive the movie you wanted to watch tonight. Perhaps your friend could use delivery drivers to cover that gap for the next few years (decade+ with the way content distributors fight).
Even in this regard the move does more harm then good. I'd expect that without seeing it even preteens would hit upon the idea of using the large razor in your boot that you just cut the restraints on your wrists off with to score and weaken the wood. As it stands now they are likely to break their hands first and then be unable to free themselves with the razor.
However, math, game theory, and Duverger's Law all say it's impossible for her to win, so that's largely irrelevant to how our country is governed.
The Green party isn't even trying to win the election. If they can just manage to get 5% of the vote they will break into the mainstream and the next election will have three candidates at the big debates. The hope is that having someone at the debates who is willing to speak truthfully, instead of just trying to win over those few nutcases who can't decide on a major party yet still think voting matters, could bring about real change.
Unfortunately we would suffer too as these red states would completely disregard climate change and utterly destroy the environment in an attempt to bring about Armageddon.
When the governemnt decides to offer you different healthcare options based on your apparent lifestyle, based on your online data, we'll realize that none of this was good for us.
I was right there with you up until this point. Right now we have a healthcare system where unless you earn a very good salary you will not get good care. I'd rather be judged by my lifestyle then my wallet. People are routinely sentenced to death under our current system because they can't afford $1000 co pay per weekly dose of medication, and these are people who have made a good effort to take care of themselves. You can be a life long chain smoker who really brought about your own cancer, but because you're a millionaire we'll do everything for you. But that toddler with poor parents- fuck him.
Theoatmeal's charity drive for funding a Tesla museum is still running (for 11 more days). It has passed it's goal but any extra money will just be used for building the actual museum. Not a bad idea for a geek charitable donation.
As a gamer I find that the celebrities I care about, the ones who entertain me and impact my life, are decidedly different then those most of the rest of the world care about. Imagine if it had been a Hollywood celebrity that was killed in the raid, rather then an internet one? There would be nothing else on the news. But when someone who is well known on some (geekish) corner of the internet dies, even people on a geek site question whether the news is meaningful.
At the end of the day, it's a lot easier if Grandma has an OS that other family members can help her with.
No matter how much I like my Linux Desktop, I don't want to be responsible for bringing non-tech-savvy people along. The rest of the family is fully capable of troubleshooting basic windows problems, more or less.

If this is the kind of news that really interests you, and you haven't already seen kerbal space program, then you should do some googling.
So they took one of the greatest minds in a generation, and attempted to kill it with large amounts of alcohol. What were they worried about?

I became a bit of a valve fanboi when I read about their no-manager system. See Here.
To my credit though, they do seem to be doing cool stuff lately.

I enjoyed this juxtaposition of this well spoken post and the word weaksauce.
I voted for Jill Stein, too.

Let's use that as a setting for a sci fi movie and waste it on contortionist zombies and scientists who act like complete douchebag morons. Awesome.
Seriously, dood, you gotta stop writing for SyFy Channel.
I don't get it. What does his comment have to do with wrestling?

You can't break what's already broke.
My solution would be to mount even more powerful lasers on some of the aircraft. Fight fire with fire. Plus, it would just be cool.
But how do you deal with all that smug?
They threw rocks at you? That's horrible.

Well said. I wish I had some mod points for this.

Another example of patents and copyrights grabbing at everything from star trek.
