  1. Re:Probably worth it though.... on Google Sets IPO Pricing · · Score: 1

your "ignorant investor" friend has a very valid point. having more shares can indeed be extremely beneficial even if the overall value of his holdings is the same. one makes money on stocks when the price PER SHARE goes up or down. selling 100 shares $1 higher than the purchase price makes a person more money than selling 50 shares $1 higher. WTF do you care if your holdings are at $20 or $40, wouldn't you rather have more shares? the real issue is whether or not the stock's Average True Range decreases with the price decrease (ex. the stock used to swing $2/day at original price, now daily swings are $1).

As Linux continues to mature and Micro$oft keeps losing more and more control, M$ will have no choice but to open the Windows source in order to compete and give consumers what they want. It reminds me of what M$ did to Netscape with IE (giving IE away for free to f*ck Netscape). I'll go even further and predict that Windows will also be free eventually. There is no other way Windows will last. As Linux gains popularity (it's already huge now anyway), what person or company is going to pay for Windows and all the new licenses and upgrades that are required? TCO? come on... every day more and more linux gurus are emerging, and universities are teaching *nix heavily also. Finding Linux support will be no problem. M$ is screwed and they know it. It's just going to be a while before it happens (at least several years). just my $.02. no refunds.

  9. This Won't Work on Smart Pool Table · · Score: 2, Insightful

This smart table calculates the angles, but the game of pool is about a LOT more than the angles. Or maybe I should say that there is a lot more to the angles than just straight geometry. For example, most people don't realize that if you spin the cue ball (whether on accident or on purpose) then the ball the cue ball strikes will pop off the cue ball at a different angle than if there was no spin on the cue ball. It is extremely difficult to put NO spin on the ball, and most players purposely spin the cue. It's just that the good players know how to re-calculate the angles needed based on what spin they are using.
anyway, this table seems like a big waste, but i guess in the end it's just a pool table.

How can it work with the Open Source community, leverage its resources, and still make a buck?

The answer? It can't. The reason? Because M$ knows that open source is the only real threat to it's monopoly. The second M$ does anything to help out the open source community, it is weakening it's control. That is why we will NEVER see IE for Linux. MS Office documents will never be in an open standard that Linux can open easily with no problems. I don't know much about Samba, but I am waiting for the day that MS changes something so that Samba doesn't work for file sharing. Open Source is MS's biggest enemy and competitor. Asking this question is like saying "how can coke help out pepsi". It's not going to happen.

And I'm not sure how a setup.exe is only for a limited set- like half a dozen windows targets. For example, Morpheus is on over a million pc's. Every one of those was installed by double-clicking setup.exe (actually it is morpheus.exe). Even something as robust as the Microsoft Visual Studio uses setup.exe to install, and is also probably on a million windows machines.
