  1. good long-term energy policy on China Goes Nuclear · · Score: 3, Interesting

China is certainly learning lessons on development from the failings of her neighbour, North Korea. Back in the day, NK went through a rash of development, building new capital goods and buildings. They intended to pay for the new capital goods/buildings with the profits the machinery, etc would earn. However, oil prices spiked and NK was left unable to keep their machinery running, making it impossible to pay for their expensive infrastructure upgrades.
China is in the middle of an enormous boom, and it's excellent to see that they have learned from the mistakes of their neighbours, and aren't heading down the path that the rest of us seem intent on going down.

At most, a lie would end up with a temporary surge in interest towards Christianity, with a huge drop off in interest once people think they've been lied to. Not exactly the best strategy for a 2000 year old religion to take.

Hopefully SCO and their supporters pay for what's going on, now. I'm thinking of closing my account at Royal Bank to avoid indirectly funding SCO. That's a pretty big deal given the fact that when I grad I'm going to be a lawyer with an MBA. (And now I'm officially hated by slashdot ;) )

This is slightly offtopic (it does have to do with the encroaching commercial exploitation of space), but doesn't it seem to be time for a space lottery?

It only costs $20 million to send someone into space.. (with promotion, taxes and stuff, I bet it would cost about $30 million to run a lottery that would do this) lots of lotteries these days run into the hundreds of millions of dollars worth of prize money.. and I think they'd get even more people than usual going for a trip into space. I'm assuming most geeks are too mathematically inclined to throw money away (buy lottery tickets).. but even I would take the chance for an opportunity to go into space.

I'm positive the Russians would love it. (NASA wouldn't be too keen on the idea). The only potential pitfall would be if the person didn't meet the health requirements.. for which case you could easily just give the person the money. That and a bunch of safety disclaimers, and they'd be set.

  17. Re:Crop Circles, Aliens, UFOs on Disney Making Fake Crop Circles? · · Score: 1

It's just another form of escapism.
There are two aspects to it, the belief some forms of the supernatural serves to act as hope that one will soon have all the problems in their life taken away. "I believe in aliens, because one day they will show themselves, then their technology will make this a utopia". (Being agnostic, I cannot say whether or not there is a God, and I'm not ruling out a possibility of a God, just the psychology behind believing in God, sometimes) "You will be punished after death for being mean to me, I take consolance in this, as I know that I will be living in a paradise, with all of the love ones in my life. Things will be great, but only after my death"
The other aspect of it is wanting to disprove science. If one can disprove one aspect of science, for example that yeti does not exist, people will try to use it to prove that all of science is therefore wrong. This will let people believe in psychokinesis, and whatever other X-Men like superpowers people believe in now, without facing internal doubt. I literally know people who try to practice being telepathic and psychokinetic. They think that if they practice enough, they will be able to do it..
Now, I know those are other factors.. like the need to be able to say, "I told you so," to an established mainstream 'idiology', like science. proving that all the smart people in the world are wrong, because they think they know everything, offers consolance.
Anyways, sorry if this is a weird rant, I haven't went to sleep from yesterday, yet.. so I'm running on empty.
