WHO has a "vested interest in downplaying serious problems" now?
WHO defers all radiation related maters to IAEA per "agreement"..
Tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands have already perished because of Fukishima.. Elevated Radiation exposure normally doesn't kill you outright(unless it takes out nerves that regulate the heart beat). It degrades your body functions, prematurely aging, some will get cancer.. on average a shorten lifespan.
plug in cars would lose all their appeal if their electricity was taxed at the same level as fuel for cars is by the way
Actually... gas taxes(~14.4% @3.70 gal) in South Florida are lower than my house electricity taxes(16.4%) percentage wise.
Of course an electric vehicle is going to consume less net energy (lower overall cost). And I can always install PV panels to make my own electricity.. [utility still wins, since they get high cost peaking power, and replaces it with off peak charging.]
"They are fine for human consumption but some Luddites.."
I have one word for your opinion/claim.. BULLSHIT!!
Given the paltry amount of controlled scientific testing, the near continuous modification of Monsanto's herbicide formula(without additional testing), and the ever increasing amounts of herbicide usage. Is a formula for a biological/ecological disaster..
I suspect Monsanto will soon be guilty of is perpetrating genocide on large portion of an unsuspecting population. All one can hope for, is that society learns from this lesson, and hands out death penalties/ asset forfeitures to all involved.
I'm scientifically trained, and I avoid consuming any products derived from GMO'd plants. Off the list so far are soy, and dent corn(processed corn products). I might have to start growing my own sweet corn soon..
The biggest actual threat the report can come up with is physical damage to large distribution station transformers. To damage these, physical action, not cyber, will have to be taken.
If one manages to turn on and off sufficient load in a synchronous fashion, (5 secs on, 5secs off, repeat.) it will cause the power companies turbines and generators to literally leap off their foundations and self destruct.
This destructive act could be accomplished by hacking the substations or by taking control of a sufficient number of Smart meters with remote service interruption capability.
Cesium doesn't linger in mammals. Depending on the tissues it lodges in after inhalation or ingestion (bone, fat, muscle etc.) its biological halflife is between 70 and 120 days i.e. half the cesium taken in will be pissed away or excreted in that time,
The biological half life of Cesium in Humans is function of Potassium intake, consume too little, the longer it hangs around, maybe a year, maybe two years.
Besides consuming known clean (or least contaminated) food, drinking water that passed thru a carbon activated filter, one should take known safe mineral supplements containing Potassium, Iodine, and Calcium after a nuclear event. Shortening the biological half life of these isotopes should be one of your a back up plans.
41K is stable, and it's 6.7% of Earth's potassium.
Potassium 39 is also stable, it makes up 93.3%. Only Potassium 40 is radioactive, (half life of 1.25 billion years), and it makes up just 0.012% of the Earth's Potassium.
We don't consider ingestion of K to be a health hazard, quite the opposite, it's essential.. A 60Kg adult typically retains 120 grams of potassium in their body at any one time. If you consume more potassium, the body excretes the excess.
The fact that there is naturally occurring radioactivity does not mean it is safe to add more.
But it is a good indication that one can safely add more. As to the rest of your post,
No.. Our bodies regulate the levels of potassium, of which only 0.012% is the radioactive(K40) isotope with a half life of 1.248 Billion years. Any extra potassium you ingest, will result in an equal amount being expelled(sweat, urine, etc). thus the whole banana equivalence chart is bogus.
Meanwhile, radioactive Cesium-134 has a half life 2.06 years and decays with both Gamma and Beta emissions. Making it 10 trillion times more radioactive than potassium in a banana. And Cesium-137 has a half life of 30.167 years, with a Beta, and a 85% chance of gamma emission. Making it 638 billion times more radioactive than an equal amount of potassium.
It would be most wise to to avoid ingestion or inhalation of radioactive Cs isotopes. If it doesn't kill you with a cancer, the radiation can degrade your immune system, heart, digestive track, etc.
For me, I think the EPA' decision to shorten US residents useful lifespan by 2, 5, maybe 10 years after the next nuclear incident is justification for shutting ALL nuclear reactors down, NOW!! Why should you, me, anyone take that kinda of risk and give it away to billionaire stock holders for free. It's obvious that the US government is planning for another incident, maybe deliberately perhaps to save Social Security.
Just how many times do you need to get burned before learning not to play with fire?
We don't need his confession or his statements to convict and give him the death penalty 18 U.S.C. 1121, 1512, 2119, 2322a . Thus the question of Miranda is mute.
"The contract should specify payment terms. Clearly a prompt payment is one that is within the time scale in the contract. One day later is not prompt."
The debtor in this case never paid off the debt in full. He with held 25& for bank fees(not legal). Thus he still owes a debt to defendant/counter plaintiff.
Neither.. It's called "Debt Collection". Creditors are allowed to make public negative statements about dead beat (non-paying) debtors. Otherwise every credit reporting/collection agency in the world would soon be out of business.
I imagine the counter claim will run at 4x the plaintiff's claims.(I.E. Treble punitive damages..).. Hopefully, the defendant/counter plaintiff can petition the court to force this foreign plaintiff/counter defendant to deposit a bond before proceeding.
"There are dosimeters on board. I have completed several radiation safety courses during my work and radiation levels for airline crew are monitored and tracked just like they are for workers in nuclear and other research fields."
Unfortunately for them, typical dosimeters only detect BETA(energetic electron) radiation. Gamma radiation(high energy photon) detection requires 3D type sensor with significant mass (large crystal in light tight box).
Gamma energy level photons have a tendency of passing thru small/thin objects(like Dosimeters) without hitting anything(no detection), But larger masses(like humans) are likely to take a hit, so to speak.
Yet another case of false sense of security provided by band-aid measurement tools
Android based products outsells Apple by a significant margin. Then throw in the sales of all sorts of NAS/set-tops Sat&Cable boxes/xDSL routers/Blu-ray players/Media players/Tivo/Smart tv's running linux.
Makes Linux the world's Dominant Operating System.
Unfortunately.. few people are aware of that Linux OS is behind a large portion of this technological revolution.
A bad faith/false DCMA claim is defacto act of criminal copyright infringement.
A party is publicly claiming false copyright ownership of the material it did not create. Which is far worse than making an illegal copy. This rises to the level of where criminal conspiracy charges kicks in. Perhaps mail fraud charge should also be thrown into the mix.
The owners of magazine need to contact and file a criminal complaint with the US district attorney's office where the letter/email was written.. (Central District of Califorina).
"There is a lot of money in violating the telemarketing rules. One illegal voice broadcaster was paid over $6 million by just one customer in only 10 months [1]. Large fines against violators are often uncollectible and ignored by scofflaws [2]. Violators often engage in money laundering and brag about their âoebulletproofâ broadcasting facilities that canâ(TM)t be traced [3]. I personally received over 300 prerecorded telemarketing calls in some years, and I was able to track down the people behind only a tiny fraction of those calls,"
Their can be only one real solution. All non-exempt mass callers, including telecos and voip providers must place a prepaind DNC bond based on call volume per hour.. like one dollar per call per hour.. a $10 bond get's a Mass caller Co 10 calls per hour to DNC listed phone numbers. As the prepaid bond depletes, the spammer losses the ability to call DNC numbers.
Add a simple mechanism for consumers to report DNC violations, like *999, something..
Each time the Consumer reports a DNC violation, he/she collects a dollar from the appropriate DNC bond and is credited to his/her Cell/landland/VoIP account. If the Teleco/VoIP provider can't trace the call origin up the food chain to the next level, they loose the dollar from the bond they provided.
"My previous company had a lot of H1-B employees. And we had a really difficult time hiring people that weren't, because there just aren't any that are worth anything. Trust me, I've done dozens of interviews where the people are just pathetic. "
I won't work for company that hires lots of H-1B's. It's just bad karma, knowing the employer cheated the system and a large number of US citizen's will be underemployed as a result.
For the most part, companies like Micro$oft have dysfunctional business models, expecting all their tech employees to move to their defacto company town is throw back to the early 1900's. They suck up all the local talent, abuse them, and then complain to congress when nobody but 3rd world indentured servants will relocate and work for them.
The H-1B program has allowed the abusive employers to continue on like nothing is wrong. The moment a US corp makes the top-100 in the H-1B visa rankings, I avoid recommending, purchasing, or installing any of their products. The logic is simple, abusive employers produce inferior, low quality products.
"This is Canada. Such a suit would likely never have been filed in the states."
I'm surprised that pleadings in Canada can be so lacking... No plaintiff's address.. how does one respond? No jurisdiction/venue claim(improperly assumed), etc..
Askey and McMaster University should immediately file a dismissal motion for lack of Jurisdiction since the publication occurred while the defendant was residing/working in the state of Kansas, USA. I.E The claimed tort occurred well outside the province the court is located.
Likewise McMaster university had no control or relationship with an act that occured before the Askey's employment.
In both cases the defendant's should ask for fees, cost's and require the plaintiff's post a security bond.
If they're ever able to engineer (or buy) a working delivery mechanism, South Korea, Japan, and even US interests, are at risk of nuclear escalation and bombardment."
It's not the threat of bombardment that worries me, it's the threat of an EMP attack you should be worried about..
The loss of our grid infrastructure would inevitably lead to multiple Fukishima like meltdowns in the USA.
"running a new computer has a larger carbon footprint as greater energy consumption of the older box is offset by the polutants and energy required to manufacture a new low energy consumption unit."
Not really..While that old iron may have weighed in @100kg or more.. Equivalent CPU tech can be had for a couple of kg.. Energy used to manufacture an item is going to be based mostly on overall weight.
I've gone the exact opposite direction.. purchasing much lighter, newer energy efficient hardware. Quad core A8 based laptop + 24" lcd monitor.. Pogoplug v2 linux server+320GB usb disc. When idle my setup uses about the same energy as a CFL bulb.. (11 watts).
Along with a new refrigerator, my household now consumes just 31%(~5,000kwh/yr) of what it consumed in 2003(15,800kwh). Saving me enough after tax funds, $1620/yr (@ $0.15kwh), to buy a new laptop+andriod cell phone+server+monitor every year, if I wanted too..
Wasting energy is not a virtue, Same goes for needlessly wasting money. .
I'm really surprised those 787's haven't been falling out of the skies by now.. As usual, (this goes for most electronic products built in the last 25 years or so.) someone along the line ignored some critical thermal management details..
Recharging Eight(8) 60+amp/hr LiCoO2 cathode based batteries packed neatly in rectangle configuration configuration at nearly 0.8C. (75 minutes.) is a receipt for inevitable failure. Yeah.. the battery is spec'd for 0.8C. charge rate.. But, not packed side by side other batteries doing the same thing. (I.E. Heat transfer coefficient has been severely degraded)..
Once internal temp hits 140F, the probability of self destruction by thermal run-away begins, at 260F it's guaranteed. Given enough time, C/D cycles, and numbers(sample size), you're bound to start having events.
This probably increases over time(age of battery. C/D cycles) as internal resistance builds, and more thermal energy is generated while recharging..
Boeing can reduce the scope of this problem by reducing the charge rate.. 0.2C to 0.4C won't have much impact on overall aircraft performance but it will reduce internal battery heating by 4x(0.4C) to 16x(0.2C).
Opps my bad.. forgot to correct for hours verses seconds.. make those numbers 3600x larger. (or scale up the number of 7 KW ion engines..),and 2000 to 3000x more fuel needed(10 to 15%) of spacecraft mass.
None the less, that's going to be at least 5x less that any nuclear powered alternative..
