    I was surprised, for a minute, to see all these Slashdotters sarcastically pretending this is proof of global climate change, or forgoing the sarcasm and outright denying it entirely. Then I remembered that, despite Slashdot readers being generally accepting of, and, in many cases, even excited about science, they also tend to be generally libertarian in their politics, which means denying ideas widely held by entire scientific and academic communities if it might lead to more gub'mint.

    If someone claims any government involvement allows censorship, then someone else can claim it also prevents distribution of religious programming to maintain separation of church and state. Hopefully everyone will realize the path to getting what they want is not interfering with others getting what they want.

    Those sodas which contain caffeine are well known to have more caffeine than coffee. Mountain Dew is near the top of the list.

    And how EXACTLY do you figure that student LOANS are a part of the safety net?

    Interest on students loans is federally subsidized. For one thing, all interest is subsidized while you are enrolled, so you don't have to worry about making payments until you graduate. For another, the rate itself is subsidized, giving you a much lower rate than if you tried to get a personal loan from a bank or put your tuition on a credit card. This allows students who aren't poor enough for direct grants and scholarships, but not rich enough to pay it all out of pocket, to still get some assistance.

    China owns about 7.5% of our debt. Japan owns almost as much, and even the UK isn't that far off. The VAST majority of our debt is owned by US citizens. If the US and China went to war, I think most of our creditors would rather have us win than China. The real question is how would China fund a war with the US, given that their export-based economy is largely dependent on our consumption.

    China owns about 7.5% of our debt. Japan and the UK each own almost as much, and are our very close allies. The American public owns almost half our debt. If it ever came time to divide up America's assets to pay off its creditors, China would not exactly take a high priority, certainly not enough for them to start seizing US territories. And if China has a habit of "just taking things" and thinks it can tussle with the US and its allies, they would have Taiwan back by now.

    Just for clarification, ALL of the US debt is denominated in US dollars. We are a sovereign issuer of debt denominate solely in a currency that we have monopoly control over, and the rest of your point is correct and accurate.

    There's the possibility that some lovely foreign gay couple purchased all three of them because their local adoption agency wouldn't approve them just because they're gay, but gosh darnit, they'll love those kids and give them a wonderful environment and keep all the brothers and sisters together and it'll just be great. There's also the much likelier possibility that they were sold into some kind of slavery, sexual or otherwise, because such a practice is still quite prevalent in various developing countries, China included. I can assure that even if buying children for the purposes of adoption were legal and regulated, a black market for human trafficking would still exist.

    Tell that to the 5 unemployed job seekers for every job opening currently. And the people who work for TSA are probably the demographic most likely to have trouble finding a job. Now isn't really a great time to quit your job because you're so bothered that it doesn't produce wealth for someone else.

    To be fair, the Daily Show and the Onion are different in that the Daily Show mostly presents actual news in a funny manner, whereas the Onion is full blown satire. The Daily Show does do satire sometimes but it isn't its core schtick. In any case, the Pulitzer is only for print journalism. There already is an award for television, the Emmy, and the Daily Show has won it for eight consecutive years.

    Yeah, I just can't imagine how the iOS users stand only having 300,000 or so malware-free apps. The restrictions are horrible. Simply horrible.

    If you have a million apps, and none of them give you the feature you want because it's restricted, you may as well have zero. If Honda lets me choose from 300,000 spoilers and paint colors for my car, but I have no way of getting cruise control installed, why would I care how many colors I have available?

    I can run anything I want on my iPhone without all this silly jailbreaking BS, though it does require a yearly $99 tax for the privledge, the experience is far enough above and beyond all other devices that the $99/year compared to the $1500/year or so for cell service it doesn't seem to be nearly as big a deal as it sounds at first.

    Where can you pay a $99/yr fee to Apple to get them to legitimately allow jailbroken features? And where can you pay $99/yr to avoid paying $1500/yr for cell service? What are you even talking about?

    The UN isn't on US soil. The site of the UN headquarters has extraterritoriality status, so even though it technically exists within the confines of the United States, it functions like an embassy in that it is not actually considered part of the United States.

    Yes, because that would mean the government has been fundamentally restructured. The government is not a household. It cannot "run out of money," any more than you can run out numbers in a computer. People who don't have the vaguest idea how the federal government works or how it is funded really shouldn't complain about either.

    What part of the new testament tries to explain the origin of rain again, or states that the point is to live well with your neighbor?

    I think it was Mark 12:31, Matthew 22:39, Luke 10:29, Romans 13:9, 1 Corinthians 10:24, Galatians 5:14, and James 2:8. But yeah the New Testament was definitely more just about rebuking people for being self righteous. Well, except for the whole point of Jesus doing that, which was that no one other than the actual son of God is fit to do that.
