Nobody is forcing WIndows down the throat, the fact is no one wants to buy PC's without Windows otherwise OEM's would have jumped on it for higher profit margins. Just imagine Best Buy lining up two laptops one with Windows 7 and other with Linux, which one will get sold?
Talking of MS-DOS, there was simply no other product that OEM's could sell at that time. By your logic, Android is also being forced to users right?
This is just a stupid argument, they gained market share when no one was around and the momentum is keeping people buy it just like what is happening with iPhone and Android. Microsoft had lead on desktops, while Apple got lead in iPhone and iPad.
Xbox is not cannibalizing Windows, you are correct. Some games/simulator only works with Windows and probably continue to do so.
Every home seems to have Windows, very few have 100% Apple or Linux environments.
Check the enterprises spend on Microsoft, that will show how Windows 7, Exchange, Sharepoint, Office, Lync are a success. They earn tons of money, so able to run longer in loss making divisions like Xbox or Live services. We do IT services for large organizations, and Microsoft still retains healthy share in IT spending. It is good that competition is challenging them, thats the only thing that makes them bring innovation.
On your point of losing share in Windows, when you are at top only way is down. Talking about WP7, its share seems to be the same level as Linux on desktops right? And just as Linux, people who use it just love it (96% of actual users lover WP7, probably just as Linux on desktop).
So the organization challenges, it is a typical trend. When the size is small, the politics is less but eventually they all get messed up like IBM. Every large organization ends up in politics, unless its controlled by single person like Steve Jobs.
Why would any company want success of a very strategic OS dependant on OEM's who have no history of developing competitive hardware (against iPad)?
Apple has demonstrated how good hardware, form and function can be addictive. There is no challenger (yet) to iPad.
Surface, if priced right could be the first contender to grab share in the market. Why? right form, function and user experience. iPad is quite common in enterprises but the limitations are there, especially lack of true Office, USB, keyboard, etc. Quick reply to emails, browsing is fine but anything more and they open up their laptops.
It will mostly work the other way, they will like Windows 8 and stick to it.
With all the issues folks have pointed out, Windows 8 is actually a much better product than Windows 7 and fully backward compatible. It may be possible to convert few from Windows to Linux, but with 90% users they will not lose much of the mind share. It is the reality folks, keep trying but better to accept it.
Guess you have your opinion, frankly I use Windows Phone, Windows 8 and XBox. Other than Live tiles, which make real sense I dont see any forced fitment to any form factor. They all are unique and appropriate for each device. The Metro UI in Windows 8 is just a much better replacement to start menu, the desktop is the same but then it is touch, mouse and keyboard friendly.
On the contrary, I find Windows 8 the best UI designs ever seen.
Try using it for sometime, with objectivity than hatred about Microsoft and you will change your opinion. It is that good.
So you have not used it, you dont have to touch it if using on your notebook. The touch will be useful for demo or tablet mode.
I am using it since developer preview on a 5 year laptop, and frankly it is the best UI and OS experience. It actually becomes difficult to even get back to Windows 7.
In my view, the telemetary data is helping it. Just use it for a month, and everyone will want Windows 8 on their machines. Forget about failing, it could be the most successful OS and even better Windows 7 in adoption.
Not sure where you see the similarities between Windows 8 and Vista or ME or BOB. I have been using all products and nothing is comparable between these products. Care to enlighten me with an example?
Unfortunately some folks prefer to shutdown their machines, heck some people have even issues in not having easy to shutdown button in the UI.
But I agree, no need to shutdown as the power management will automaticaly sleep-hibernate based on the profile.
Exactly, only non-users seem to make bold predictions of Windows 8. The OS is absolute pleasure to use, and great improvement even over the established Win7.
Microsoft is doing a great job this year.
I dont agree, there is no loss of productivity moving to Win8. The search is simple on Metro (start typing), as well as Desktop (Win + Q) then start typing
If you still want touch or mouse, then Metro tile group is better to navigate than start menu, with its semantic zoom feature.
Use it for sometime, you will change your opinion in short time
Agree, my 5 year old Centrino laptop screams with Windows 8. They have done a great job in startup times.
So hardware-wise, plus Windows 7 compatibility will make this a success, against what most of the Slashdotters want to happen.
It is not ME or Vista, but another decade of success on the desktop.
You are ignorant, Windows 8 is just stable and good as Windows 7 actualy way better. Comparing it to ME or Vista is just your anti-Microsoft blood.
I have been using this for last few months and to be frank, they have a winner. I
Its the right strategy from Microsoft, not having the right hardware for Windows 8 would have meant sure shot failure which they cannot afford and not planning to do. Also Microsoft is not stopping OEMs from using Android or Linux for tablets either. So why are the OEM's complaining?
Best for them is to beat Microsoft, and come up with better hardware, experience and competitive price. They need to realize without it they cannot compete with iPad anyway.
Not exactly, Lumia 900 will get updated to Windows 7.8 with some of the key Windows 8 features. What is missing is mostly hardware dependant, like NFC, etc.
And you are missing one key difference, they have catch up with Android and iOS so the changes are big in short time. Windows Phone 8 now is equal and actually better than iOS and Android in features and execution.
Till now wireless providers were busy pitcing iPhone and Android over any other platform. Nokia Lumia 900 was bit of a change.
The share has doubled in this year, and expected to grow. It should reach 10% in the coming year and then be on equal footing with Android and iOS.
The same reason why Linux fails on desktop applies here as well right?
There is signifant sharing of code between these platforms now, the changes are more onto UI aspects due to screen changes. So technically you can write for one, and easily port it to others within few days. The video actually shows migration from iOS to Windows Phone 8 in few weeks (C/C++), so between Windows will be easier and one of the design goals
You are just ignorant, you need to see the full video to see the changes. No other platform has such clean implementation of these features.
Comparing that to Linux is so way off. Grow up !
They tried that route till 6.5, without vertical integration the final product will not stand chance against Apple with its tightly controlled software and hardware. The specification boundaries is helping them achieve excellent performance across all devices. Check it yourself, a single core device performing as fast as dual core.
So the approach is right, and unfortunately the only one available to be relevant in the market.

So 700 million copies and growing is not a success? Then how do you define success?

thats not applicable for Windows anymore, especially after XP SP6 and Windows 7 the OS is as stable as anything out there.
Unfortunately some folks prefer to shutdown their machines, heck some people have even issues in not having easy to shutdown button in the UI. But I agree, no need to shutdown as the power management will automaticaly sleep-hibernate based on the profile.

Most of Microsoft applications on Windows 8 are in preview mode, and not complete. So better to wait than making such post.

Its RTM, available for download for all SA, Technet and MSDN subscribers. This is not the Surface tablet

Android is better for that, in terms of power guzzling
